He doesn’t even believe in marriage. It was created as a fucked up business exchange, really. “Take my prettiest daughter and a hundred pounds a year so that we can benefit from your fortune.” It’s not romantic or necessary at all. It’s still laced with traditions that allude back to its original purpose. In Whizzer’s opinion, weddings are a load of expensive bullshit. So what the fuck is he doing here?
He got caught up in all the romance of the proposal and then the excitement of planning the thing--he may think weddings are bullshit, but he’ll never pass up a chance to plan a good party. It’s almost like he’s been in a fog since the day Marvin caught him off-guard with that ring, and he’s only just now waking up from it. What, half an hour before he’s supposed to walk down the aisle? Great timing.
It’s not that he doesn’t love him. Because of course he does. It’s not that he wants to ever stop being with him. Because of course he doesn’t. But does he need to declare that in front of everyone he knows? Does he need to promise forever and ever when God only knows what tomorrow will bring? It’s an impossible promise to make. And what’s the point in making it? It won’t make it any more certain than it already was. I should have said no. He should have insisted that they didn’t need this, that their relationship was perfect as is. He might’ve understood then. But now? Now it’s too late. Now he would never be forgiven.
He’s sitting on this fancy couch in this fancy room in his fancy tux, beginning to spiral into a bit of a panic attack, when someone knocks at his door.
“It’s me,” Marvin says, poking his head in.
Whizzer clenches his teeth and looks down at the floor. “Thought we weren’t supposed to see each other yet,” he says.
“Couldn’t resist,” Marvin says softly, crouching in front of him. “You look…” he trails off. “Well, I don’t have words.”
Whizzer can’t help the small smile that pulls at his lips, and he finally looks up at him. He’d let Whizzer help dress him, thank god. He’s wearing a dark blue suit with a nice black tie. It’s simple, but everything fits him well for once. His hair is shorter than it was, and Cordelia had done a good job styling it. And Whizzer always loves him, however dishevelled he may look, but looking at him now makes his heart skip a beat and makes his mouth go dry. “I could say the same about you.”
Marvin’s face goes red and he stands, dragging Whizzer up with him, and wrapping his arms around him. He leans his head into Whizzer’s shoulder as Whizzer shuts his eyes and holds him as close as he can. “How are you doing?” Marvin asks softly.
“I mean, if you want to call the ceremony off and skip right to the reception and the honeymoon, we can do that.”
Whizzer’s eyes pop open and his breath catches. How the hell could he know about his panicked thoughts? Had he accidentally ranted out loud or something? “W-why would you think I want that?”
“Because I know you,” Marvin says, leaning back to look Whizzer in the eye. “I know your opinion on the whole concept of marriage. And I also know when you’re apprehensive. I know when something in you is telling you to bolt.”
“I wouldn’t do that to you.”
“I know,” Marvin nods. “I know you wouldn’t. Which is why I’m telling you that you just have to say the word and we’ll skip right to the drinking and the dancing and, you know, everything else.”
“Isn’t this what you want, though?” Whizzer asks.
“So badly,” Marvin says. “But not as badly as I want you to be happy. Whatever the hell that means.”
“A little late for this conversation, huh?” Whizzer says.
“Better late than never.”
This is it. This is the out Whizzer was praying for just minutes before. This is what he was wanting, right? A way to stay with him without all of this stupid convention? He could walk out of this place right now with him, head off to Europe and forget the whole thing. But, suddenly, the thought makes him sick.
Whizzer shakes his head. “I don’t… I don’t want that,” he says. “I want to walk down that aisle with you and I want to embarrass the shit out of myself when I tell you publicly and incredibly cheesily how much I love you. I want that.”
Marvin smiles broadly and kisses him. Sweet and slow and loving. “God, I love you,” he mutters against Whizzer’s lips.
“I love you, too,” Whizzer smiles. “Now get out of here. You’ve cursed us enough already.”
Marvin laughs and pushes him away. “I thought you hated all these stupid traditions.”
“Yeah, yeah, you have our whole lives to give me shit about it,” Whizzer says. “Now shoo.”
Marvin laughs again, and walks towards the door.
Just as he’s about to leave, Whizzer calls him back. “Wait. Marvin. Just one more thing?”
Whizzer shakes his head. “I can’t wait to be your husband.”
Marvin is grinning as he shuts the door behind him.
