Emily scoffed, wiping her brow as she stumbled out of the forest. She had no idea how to leave this world but she was praying that she would be able to. She did not want to be in this wonderful but very much weird world. A world full of strange creatures and tricksters. She was yet to run into a friendly face, at this point she would take indifference in comparison to the mocking condescension she was getting from the inhabitants of this world.
Emily frowned as she spotted a table set under a tree in front of a house. For a brief moment Emily had hoped there would be some there to help until she remembered that nothing in this world makes sense. Knowing her luck if she stepped anywhere near the table or the house she would end up dead.
“Are you just going to stand there?” A voice called out to her. Emily's eyes narrowed at a figure sitting at the table. She took a tentative step forward. She braced herself for something to happen but nothing. Taking a deep breath she continued to the table. The table was set full of mismatched tableware, none of the plates matched, the cups piled up were all different shapes and sizes - several of them chipped. The table cloth was made of patches of different materials. Food of all sorts covered it.
“I’m sorry there is no room,” The same voice said, Emily looked around the table to see several empty seats. Pinching at her nose Emily said nothing, this goddamn world. Shaking her head she looked at the man, he like everything else she had seen so far was odd. Oversized clothes hung off his frame and most notably he wore a frayed top hat. That been said there was something familiar about him, she stared at his face trying to place where she could have seen him before. She was aware this might have seemed rude but it had bothered her.
The man raised an eyebrow standing up as well. Emily rolled her eyes ofcourse he was tall. Was everyone here tall? The man leaned down, invading Emily’s personal space. “Why are we staring at each other?” he said as Emily jumped back.
“I wasn’t-” She protested, her face heating up. “Have we met?”
“Yes,” The man said. “Just then, what a funny thing you are, can't even remember things that happened seconds ago,” he said as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
“I meant - “ Emily started but shook her head. “We don’t know each other, I don’t even know your name,” she huffed while sitting down.
“Neither do i but that doesn’t mean a thing,” He shrugged sitting back down. “Wine?” he offered after a moment. Emily shook her head, after the potions she was not drinking anything from this world again.
Emily wiped at her eyes, swallowing as another sob wracked through her body. What a horrid night, she had no idea what would happen when she walked back into the Zhang mansion. She doubted Gideon would ever want to talk to her again and her mother - she was sure at this point she would be worth less than dirt to her mother.
Rubbing at her arms, trying to figure out what her options were. Maybe she could try to find Jessica, stay with her and find a job though she had no idea what she could offer an employer. She was broken out of her thoughts which had quickly become a pity party for one by a rustling coming from a nearby hedge. She looked around praying no one had followed her, she really did not want to deal with other people. Instead of a person her eyes narrowed on a white rabbit.
Well that was unexpected.
She watched the rabbit transfixed for some reason. She raised an eyebrow paused, a voice saying “I going to be late,” Emily once around spun around looking for whomever she heard but no one. “Very late,” the voice once again spoke. Emily must have been more exhausted than she expected because she swears the voice came from the rabbit. Her eyes narrowed as the rabbit started to scurry off. Was it insane to believe there was a talking rabbit? Yes. Was it more even crazier to follow said rabbit? Yes but here she was following the rabbit through the Zhang’s garden. Following it into the forest that surrounded their estate. She paused watching as it jumped down a rather large rabbit hole, without a second though Emily jumped down following it.

November Week One (Thursday)
“Thank you,” Emily said to Bridget, a receptionist who helped her carry several Cauldrons into a free elevator. Her fellow co-workers from the department of international magical cooperation were all suddenly too busy to lend a hand. The Cauldron’s themselves weren’t to heavy, magical enchanted to be easily moved but the fact she had to bring back three different sets of Cauldrons. Well it was more than she could realistically manage but she jumped at the chance to get out of the office. Van Doren had been in a fowl mood all day after finding out the minister of magic had decided to take Arwan Borghese to the International Confederation of Wizards. That was the part of the reason the Cauldrons were being reviewed. Every year they did this and every year they never changed them.
With a sigh she slipped into the elevator behind her formidable wall of Cauldrons. Soon a herd of people came storming into the elevator not sparing Emily or her cauldrons a second glance as they went to the opposite side. She pulled out her phone, the Choi group chat had been buzzing all morning. She knew the topic would be her upcoming birthday and the party she specifically told them didn’t want or need. Right now the three of them were fighting amongst themselves about the theme so she should have.
Between politely telling Daniel renting the entire London Museum would be too much they managed to reach the next floor. Department of Magical Games and Sports. The elevator was flooded with more people. She supposed that floor would be pretty busy currently, the quidditch world cup was right around the corner. “So what do you think Zhang?” Emily's head shot up. Zhang was a common name, or common-ish name it wouldn’t be him. Still curiosity got the better off her, peeking up from behind her wall of Cauldrons, eyes scanning over everyone before falling on Dea Locke, the statuesque head auror and beside her was Zhang. Unfortunately the Zhang she had thought it was.
Any earlier thoughts she had about the stupidity of Cauldron checking vanished . It was truly important and honour to do so, especially since the wall was the only thing stopping this from becoming awkward. Or mutually awkward, one sided awkwardness she could handle. Trying to ignore the rest of the conversation, she might have heard snippets here and there but that was because they were talking too loud. Her mother didn’t raise no eavesdroppers (actually she did).
The Department of Magical Transport . Emily didn’t bother to look up as she heard people make their way out onto the floor. The next floor would be hers and that led her to a small issue, how to get herself and the cauldrons out of the elevator without being noticed. Obviously magic is the easiest way to get them out but how to make sure she isn’t seen. She could carry some out by hand just one of the bigger ones to cover her face.
The Department of International Magical Cooperation. Emily cursed under her breath, well here goes nothing. Waving her wand the Cauldrons started to float out of the elevator. She followed behind making sure to mask herself with the one Cauldron she was holding. Her plan worked, once that elevator door closed she would be doing a victory dance.
“You dropped this,” An all too familiar voice called out. She froze, her grip instantly tightening on the cauldron. Her victory dance was canceled. There was nothing to celebrate. Except for she had no idea what she dropped all the Cauldrons were out, she could feel her wand in her pocket and her phone - her phone was not there. “Emily?” Lucas said. “Your phone?” he said. She reached around the Cauldron holding out her hand trying to grab the traitorous good for nothing phone. She would have to buy a new one.
“Thats my shirt Em,” Lucas laughed.
Emily briefly considered tipping the Cauldron over her head and running towards her office “Can you please hand me my phone then,” Emily huffed.
“I could yes,” Lucas hummed but her hands were still phoneless. “Oh you mum just asked if she should invite me?” Lucas said. “What will i be invited or not invited to?” Emily let out scandalized scoff putting the Cauldron down to look at Lucas, if she wasn’t so acutely aware of how she looked infront of him she would have her hand on hip. Looking through her messages.
“Are you going through my messages?”
“No they are popping up,” Lucas said holding her phone and pointing to her most recent notification. “Also who is Liam Wang and why is he liking your instagram post?” he asked eyes narrowing. “I’ll just block him -” he said.
“You will not,” Emily huffed. “Give me my phone Lucas,” she said.
“What if he is a dark wizard?” Lucas asked but finally passed her phone towards her. “It’s better to be safe than sorry.”
“He is one of Daniel’s friends,”
“Even worse then,” Lucas muttered. “So,” he said, picking up the spare cauldron. “Is this invitation for your birthday?” he asked.
“I can carry that,” Emily said. Lucas huffed, “And yes my family wants me to have a party even though i keep telling them its not worth it,” she said. “And you shouldn’t you be getting back to your training, seriously Lucas i can carry the Cauldron its no problem,” she said. The last thing she wanted was Lucas to get kicked out of auror training.
“Well i am glad they are ignoring you,” Lucas huffed. Emily scoffed what a traitor, he was supposed to agree with her regardless of their relationship status. “Your birthday is very important,” he said, shaking his head. “It should be a public holiday, everyone should celebrate the birth of Emily Choi,” he said.
“Shut up,” Emily muttered, her words lacked bite and her cheeks were heating up.
“And i am on a break,” Lucas said. “Apparently the last trainee auror went a little,” he paused pulling a face. “Basically they don’t want me to end up in St Mungo’s before i even start so i have plenty of time to help a beautiful girl carry a Cauldron,”
“Don’t joke about that,” Emily snapped. “You need to look after yourself,” she said faltering with her words as Lucas smile grew. “Anyway - how is training going?” she asked awkwardly. “Is this not awkward for you?”
“Being asked about training not really but i can’t share that much, magically binding contracts and all but I think I am doing okay,” he said.
“Seriously?” Emily asked, magically binding contracts - what were they even doing. “No, I meant talking to me , you know since we broke up,” she said, avoiding looking at him.
“You mean since we went on a break,” Lucas said. “I don’t recall ever agreeing to breaking up,” he continued.
“That is what a break is,”
“No,” Lucas said, shaking his head. “Maybe it is on the muggle show, mates or whatever, but I meant like a pause, a super brief pause,” he said. Emily opened her mouth to respond but found herself speechless, she was still trying to process what he just said.
“Yes right,” Emily said, picking up the pace to get to her office.

Lucas never thought he’d miss the hotel his little gang had turned into their base until he spent what felt like years in Plyea fighting for his and his teams life. When they had returned to Earth he considered momentarily kissing the ground, just happy to back in his own dimension once more. He tuned out of Minah and Sienna’s conversation about the world had changed in the five years when he felt his long-forgotten cell phone suddenly vibrate an influx of texts come through, some from Wolfram and Hart which he ignored, one from Tyler that he deleted, a few from Emily that he would read later, just looking at the preview it was about her battle with a god, even though the content was less than ideal he couldn’t help but smile. Any message, no matter the content, from Emily made him happy. The most recent message was perhaps the most perplexing one from Mark that simply said i am sorry.
“Lucas tell Minah to accept my jacket,” Sungjae called out, Lucas shoved his phone in his jacket and looked at the pair who were currently not on speaking terms due to Minah marrying a demon king (it was to save them all but Sungjae’s bruised ego was in the way of him acknowledging that) . Lucas looked at Minah who was still dressed in her Plyean attire, while it was fit for a Plyean queen it didn’t leave much to the imagination and the looks she was getting from people who were passing by certainly made that clear.
“Lucas tell Sungjae that wouldn’t put that even if the jacket wasn’t tattered and covered in demon blood i wouldn’t put it on because it is hideous,” Minah snapped with an eye-roll. “And we are almost there anyway,” she huffed.
“I am the only one who finds it funny Lucas didn’t say a word then? Yes - okay,” Parker, one of the teams newer members spoke. The withering glares Sungjae and Minah sent were enough to shut him up though Lucas did here him grumble something about people needing to grow up.
“Anyway shall i -” Lucas said as the came up to the door of the hotel. “I never said this before - but there is no place like,” he started excitedly before he noticed a lone figure sitting in the foyer. “Home,” he finished lamely, his stomach dropping as he took in the figure, sitting on the couch, head in his hands only looking up when heard Lucas speak. A dull ache spread across his chest as an overwhelming wave of fear washed over. For the first time in a very long time he felt pure fear. He couldn’t be here for that. It just not possible.
“M? What are you doing here?” Minah asked, “Is Jane here as well, are you getting marri-” she stopped when M looked up at them. Whatever Minah was going to say fell away as the happiness the group had once felt had been destroyed with one look. M looked bad, to put it lightly, his normally tanned skin looked pale and lifeless, his hair was a mess as if he had been running his hands through it constantly and his eyes were glassy, lifeless and red like he had been crying the whole day.
“DId something happen to her?” Sungjae asked stepping forward. Lucas rather selfishly hoped that M was here because of Jane, that he was here to mourn with Minah and be comforted by Sungjae. It was cruel off him to wish that one someone he considered a friend but the only other person who could cause such a reaction in M was - no he didn’t want to even consider the option.
“Did that Glory bitch do something to her?” Minah asked, “My visions have been playing up but i swear saw you two - you know what it doesn’t matter if i have to kll a god so be it, “ she started to rant. M shook his head in response. Minah stopped, a frown making its way onto her face. Lucas would be lying if he said he didn’t notice the concerned look Minah shot him. She knew as well now.
“It is for Eunmi? The last my trackers have heard she escaped prison and was headed South?” Sungjae asked. Lucas knew that Sungjae was only asking this to kill time, Sungjae’s former slayer turned enemy would be the last thing M would come for. He doubted M could care less about her. Despite M’s normally kind demenour, Lucas knew better than anyone that when M was wronged he could hold grudges. Especially if they were deserved and Eunmi’s certainly was.
“It’s Emily,” Lucas said his voice cracking, it wasn’t a question. It was never a question the only reason M would visit him was if something happened to her. M said nothing but his silence was deafening, it served to confirm what Lucas had thought when he spotted M. His eyes slammed shut as he took a deep breath, one he didn’t technically need, but dull ache had turned into pure agony. ‘Say it,” he all but growled. “I need to-” he said through gritted teeth as memories assaulted his mind. Everything from the first time he saw her to their most recent break up and everything in between. He needed M to confirm, to break that only last string of hope.
“She’s dead,” M said his voice hoarse, Lucas opened his eyes to find M staring at him. Lucas never though two words would be his undoing but he could feel his legs buckle as everything else became numb. He was vaguely aware of Minah squeezing his shoulder and whispering how sorry she was. He could hear Parker say something but it was muted as if he was underwater. He watched unmoving as Sungjae pushed Parker and Sienna towards the staircase.
“We should sit down,” Minah said gesturing for the lounge. M nodded as Lucas followed them over to the couch. Sungjae came back over and sat down next to M.
“So-” Sungjae said. “Uh how did it happen?” he asked.
Minah let out a shrill sound of disapproval. “Sungjae!” she exclaimed.
“No it’s fine,” M said. “She sacrificed herself to save her sister and the rest of the world,” he said. Lucas zoned out as M went into more detail about what exactly happened. Even with his soul a lick of white hot rage ran through him. A sister that wasn’t really her sister, just mystical force turned into a human because some monks couldnt do their job - if she didn’t exist none of this would have happened.
“We tried to get in contact,” He heard M say. Suddenly the phone in his pocket weighed him down, she was asking for help and he didn’t even know. He stood up muttering some excuse and racing out of the building ignoring his friends call.
