My gear for the day 1 night run.
Day 1-The Legs Still Work
After two false starts this year (once in September, the other in October) I have decided to give this whole running thing another shot. Believe it or not, this year was fantastic for me as far as running gains go. In March I ran my first 7K, July held my first half-marathon, and August lead me to my first RAGNAR Great River Relay. I wanted to fit a marathon in for October but with work and school my training faltered and I have since been in a kind of hibernation.
No longer do I wish to stay dormant however! This week has been the first week in a very, very long time that I have been inexplicably happy. Honestly I do not have a damn clue as to why. To clue you into why this is not the norm for me, I should probably share that in February my five year relationship with my fiancé abruptly ended which devastated me (although he would be the first to tell you differently).
In January, as is customary, I began with a simple (or so I thought) resolution, I would run. I had no definite guidelines or goals so it seemed destined to fail. Before the end of the month however I had signed up for the Get Lucky 7K and started my training. Little did I know that in the middle of February my whole world would change. Although it was a long time coming as neither of us were happy, it surprised me. We were getting on each other’s nerves on a regular basis, fighting about nothing, along with a few other issues which need not be discussed here. It is unfortunate that the relationship ended the way that it did but in the long run I know we are both better off.
Anyway, during the emotionally hard months of February, March, and April I trained hard and raced in my first 7K. Once I received the results I found out that I didn’t suck! Not sucking at something was exactly what I needed for a confidence boost. Mediocrity in something that I had just decided to start doing was the best feeling in the world. I was a runner! It was official with a documented pace time and everything! Of course, after a week or so every one of my co-workers was sick of hearing me talk about it. Either way, it was a shining moment when I most needed it. The rest of the summer went super well and I enjoyed every race and made a ton of new friends who inspire me to better.
A couple of weeks ago I signed up for my first marathon!! It will be Grandma’s Marathon which runs from Two Harbors to Duluth in northern Minnesota. I cannot wait! Since this week was a great one emotionally, I thought that it was the best time to begin the road back into running and further into marathon training. My minimum goal for the marathon is an 8:00min/mile pace. Hopefully I will be faster but honestly, I just don’t want to be the last person.
I guess we will see.
Day 1-Workout Summary:
Type: Run
Duration: 30 minutes (outside)
Route: House to Lake Harriet
Miles: 3.16 miles
Cons:
*I was almost hit by a minivan even though I had my LED headlamp on high, a reflective vest, AND a red blinking light (bitch).
*Brrr today was cold.
*Unfortunately now I have a cough from running in the cold (boo).
Pros:
*The legs still work!
*I am feeling so good!
Plan for tomorrow: 6:30AM run, same loop, nice and easy.
