Tanith Lee was the first woman to win the British Fantasy Award for best novel, for the second book of the Flat Earth series. She died in 2015. You can buy Tales From the Flat Earth here and here .

SxF Vol. 16: Red and Blue Chair by Gerrit Rietveld (1917)

Melinda is sitting on Gerrit Rietveld’s Red and Blue Chair (1917). Out of all the other characters who are looking towards or facing the audience, she is the only one sitting with her back turned to us, as if we’re not supposed to access her. She doesn’t want to be ‘read’. The chair is a piece of modernist design about order and structure, but here’s the thing: that chair has a reclining back probably for relaxing and Melinda isn’t using it. She’s sat hunched on the edge, leaning forward. It’s like no matter how ‘comfortable’ her position in life looks she’s never actually at ease but permanently anxious and on edge. She looks more like part of the furniture than a person using it. Visually it’s like she’s drowning in washed-out tired colours too.

Then there are three things under her chair. The volleyball (Ch. 65), the crystal ball (Ch. 108) and the moon (Ch. 108). Not messy, just crammed under there. I’m mostly interested in the crystal ball that's hidden directly under her, because the occult hobby is a part of her identity she wants to keep hidden the most. The moon represents her alias as LunaLuna Selena in Ch. 108 but also how Melinda isn’t the ‘main character’ of her own life. Donovan is. He’s the sun and she’s just circling around him, pulled by the gravity. She never gets to shine as she just exists in his shadow, all of her accomplishments are indirectly connected to him. The volleyball is supposed to be her thing, but it looks to me like it’s rolling away as it’s the farthest object away from her. That makes it feel like even her own interests aren’t really hers just part of the public image. Little fun fact, if the series takes place in 1963 that means Melinda was born in 1917. The year this chair was made.

This here is what sums up so much of Dandadan to me.

It's not just that Momo was hurt, which is in itself enough to infuriate Okarun.

It's that he did so while violating Jiji's autonomy and using Jiji's own hands to do the deal. Dandadan takes a moment to say, what is happening to Jiji is horrible and he is the victim here.

One thing that keeps coming up in Dandadan is Body autonomy, and I do think it's intentional that the charcters involved with that keep on being men.
