Spoilercut for backrooms cause my friend hasn't seen it yet

Something I really liked about the way the movie handles change is the fact that it's not a one-off thing. One of the protagonists makes a decision to change at the beginning: he goes to therapy. He wants to get better, he makes that step, and it's a real, good first step. Does he also go there because he wants to be told that nothing is his fault? Yes, absolutely, but that's not contradictory. Most people who try to break from patterns are in various degrees of ambivalent states, where they are motivated to make change, but also motivated for things to stay the same, and sometimes they are motivated to change only if they don't have to compromise on certain things (for example, the protagonist might want to get better but not at the expanse of admitting responsibility because that sounds too difficult for him). It's still a first step that matters. But it's not enough, because in the end his desire to stay the same wins over his desire to change, for a number of reasons that are crystal clear when you look at the way his character is written, without requiring someone to come and list them off (the character is extremely isolated, he is experiencing the aftermath of quitting drinking, the therapist who was about to be supposed to help him work on himself made him a massive promise of result and then broke the alliance by disbelieving his story, not to mention the backrooms are horrifying). And as a direct result of him deciding not to change, the backrooms immediately devour him.

Meanwhile, the other protagonist also ends up making steps towards changing out of her saviour pattern -and here too, the context makes so much sense as to why for her it works. She first snaps out of her automatic pattern because the behaviour of her patient scares, horrifies and disgusts her so much that it overrides her usual response to distress: her priority isn't on saving him, it's on surviving, and he's been doing such terrible things in front of her that it challenges her ability to feel empathy for him. The situation also reverses the patient-therapist vertical dynamic she had going on: she's always the saviour, coming from above and fixing things. Here, she's the victim, and he is trying to save her, and that gets her to realize how fucked up that dynamic is. Then, the story immediately validates that wanting to change is the right way by killing him. As she runs away, she then makes choice number two, by hitting the monster again and again with the piece of cement she carries everywhere, symbolically learning to let go of the past. And then, when she escapes, the monster gets stuck in the passageway reaching out towards her and it doesn't look like it's trying to kill her anymore (even though it certainly is): it looks like it's calling for help. She hesitates, then leave, while it stays stuck in place. And that final choice is why she survives the backrooms.

Anyway all that to say, I really like how well the movie illustrates how difficult the path to change is compared to what we often see in movie, aka one solid moment of taking a step forward and that one big epic moment leads to either redemption or downfall. Easily my favourite representation of change since Zuko's redemption arc in ATLA.

If you hate Israel and then act like Canada and the USA are somehow good, salvageable, or in any way morally better than Israel I think you’re just as bad as the Zionists btw.

“Israel bought out the USA” as if the USA is somehow an innocent victim of Israeli influence, like it would somehow be a good settler-colony if the evil Israeli settler colony didn’t exist. lol. lmao even. The USA and Israel are just two settler-colonial countries built on imperialism and hatred, they love working together towards the same interests, actually.

Same for Canada, which committed a genocide against its indigenous peoples and still hasn’t given back most of the land that was illegally taken from them in clear violation of every “treaty” they ever made, treaties which they *continue to violate to this day* btw. They claim truth and reconciliation and hide behind their land acknowledgments, but really the only thing separating Israel from Canada is a time difference and normalization.

So yeah, if you’re a Canadian or USAmerican who thinks that you’re settler-colony is somehow better or more legitimate than Israel, I distrust you heavily and would suggest doing some more research into your country’s founding and continued existence through marginalized and indigenous perspectives, cause you aren’t so hot.
