hc that Hinata completely forgets that he's actually been a captain in middle school (it kind of just... slips his mind) until in his third year they meet one of his middle school first year teammates (maybe one of them stuck to volleyball?) who's ((jokingly?)) like “hey captain” and everyone in Karasuno is ????? until Hinata recognises him like !!! YOU STILL PLAY THAT'S SO COOL and everyone in Karasuno is still confused, not because Hinata knows him (Hinata and his flocks of friends from random schools are well known) but Captain??? is he picking on Hinata?? Should we do anything?? Was he a captain??? (What?? When???)

Tendou, sidling up to Ushijima: hey bestie, quick question, what species of bug would make the best baseball team if bugs were relatively as smart as humans, approximately human sized and were capable of understanding the rules of baseball?

Ushijima, eyes immediately unfocusing:

Tendou, who finished with his prank and has been sitting beside him for fifteen minutes studying: Oh?

ushijima never really pauses for dating. maybe he agrees to the occasional confession but it just leaves him feeling removed from the date. like he doesn't belong here, what's he doing? he doesn't like it: so he stops.

he'd rather spend his nights with friends. he fits in the spaces beside tendou, beside his teammates, beside his friends. he fits there in ways that he doesn't with the faceless and nameless people he's gone out with, or the hookups who wanted something serious.

he doesn't dwell on it, but eventually it piles up. the little things he's noticed, the comments he's heard towards himself and others.

he's almost 30 when he mentions it to tendou, if it's weird he's only ever had physical relationships? if it's weird that he's only ever liked those?

and why would tendou ever think it is? he's found comfort and happiness in fulfilling his dreams, in being himself every day.

what more is there? what more should be there? why should he try and fit other things in there, just because that's the normal thing to do? he doesn't want conformity for himself, so why should he tell his best friend to force that either?

and how can ushijima find a part of himself wrong if it's reflected in a person he loves dearly?

AU where Ushijima is the new kid at Tendou’s elementary school

Goshiki assumes Ushijima and Tendou are dating when he joins the team and it comes up in the most ridiculous times and stresses Ushijima out because Goshiki keeps making comments with so much confidence that Ushijima himself starts to be convinced. Like approaching Valentines day when Ushijima says he doesnt have plans Goshiki is just like "well you can't let Tendou down, so at least plan something!" and Ushijima has NO idea how this is related to Valentines but now he's stressed about letting Tendou down (??) and just nods seriously. Semi and Yamagata start a "Goshiki Thinks Ushijima and Tendou are Dating" Watch to make sure nobody tells him the truth and track how long it takes him to figure it out.

Tendou mentions him and Ushijima hanging out after school one day and Goshiki says something like "oh, date night?" And Tendou is like 80% sure this first year is trying to bully him.

Ushijima: My mother keeps asking if she can set me up with her friends' daughters.

Goshiki: oh no, she isn't supportive???

Ushijima, baffled:

i'm not a relationship expert by any stretch but i think the best- or maybe not the best, but the funniest thing you can possibly do if you find out your spouse is having an affair, is to have an affair with the same person. Like what are they gonna do. get mad at you? they started it

dumb kryk au where they’re both bartenders at a nightclub and try to one-up each other on who they manage to take home until one morning yaku wakes up in an unfamiliar bed… he can’t remember shit (he knows it’ll come back to him) but he has to brag to kuroo about this, so he texts him gloating about how hot the guy he hooked up with last night is, before even turning over. and the phone on the other side of the bed chimes . only then does he roll over with dawning horror

(and neither of them can remember the night. at the end it turns out that they didn’t sleep together at all)

People who are able to write multichaptered fics and not get sick of your own idea or spoil everything in chapter 1 or lose motivation or forget about it, teach me your secrets

Outline with some wiggle room. Room for details, room to add, and room to reorder.

Make a running gag like an inside joke for yourself that you want to keep up (it can be something small and insignificant or crucial to a subplot just as long as you like it. And you can always edit it out later if you want)

Write in whatever order you want! Linear writing isn't always the best. Heck if creating art was linear your favorite movies, shows, and series would take forever to make (and sometimes they take forever as is)

As for not spoiling—screw that! Drop some hints, foreshadowing is beautiful. You can know the ending by chapter 1 as long as the rest of the story holds people's attention

Plot twists shouldn't change the ending or come out of left field. It's more fun to facepalm and question how you missed the signs as a reader than be thrown for a loop

Get through a few chapters before posting anything. Sometimes a fic just doesn't want to work with you and you might have to abandon it. Save the ideas, you can reuse them in a different story.

The notes on your phone can be useful to jot down ideas on the go. A notebook and pen work too but it's not as organized

Expand on your au. Characters don't have to share all their back stories in the fic. Think up a few misadventures, get invested in the world you have planned. Stretch beyond the plot. Go deeper into who you're writing. You don't have to share everything

World building is your friend. Make up rules, history, animals and plants, legends and myths (not the best for realistic works) Knowing the au world well and getting into it helps a lot with keeping interested

Beta readers and friends to bounce ideas off of are miracles. The best motivators out there.
