Supersonic Visits Christopher Burch.
San Francisco artist Christopher Burch has a new solo show, âThe Missed Adventures of Brâer Rabbit and Brâer Death in the Land of Shadowsâ opening Saturday, June 13th at the African American Art & Culture Complex in San Francisco, California.  In great anticipation for this event Supersonic photographer Shaun Roberts stopped by the artistâs studio to take a look at the pieces in progress - an ongoing narrative that Burch has been developing for years.
Christopherâs work focuses around the story of Brâer Rabbit, an ambiguous and ambivalent trickster, from the Uncle Remus folktales popular in the late 19th century South. Â Highlighting Brâer, Christopher asserts that this trickster archetype has never left the African American imagination - especially those of Africans enslaved in the United States.
For this chapter of his narrative, âChapter 13: The Sad Fate of Barbersville (How Jenny Became a Pirate),â the works displayed have been inspired by Nina Simoneâs performance of the song âPirate Jennyâ which is has been described as âa darkly surreal revenge fantasy [that is] equal parts revenge, retribution and resistance.â  Burch has re-imagined his friends as characters in Jennyâs cohort, painting their portraits directly onto silver platters.  He has also developed a series of harmonicas affixed with straight razors creating metaphorical melodic knives.
You can continue below to see Christopher at work and at play developing these fantastic works of art wonderfully captured by the lens of Shaun Roberts below:

Mario Martinez â Mars Molecule Collection
Mario Martinez (aka MARS-1) was born in Boulder, Colorado in 1977. At the age of 13, he began writing graffiti in his hometown of Fresno. He later attended Academy of Art in San Francisco, where he currently lives and works remaining heavily active in the cityâs contemporary art scene. Besides using brushes on the usual material he paints high buildings in cities and makes sculptures of bronze, participated in so many projects.Â
Recently the artist has released a set of bronze sculptures titled Mars Molecule Collection. The sculpts are three dimensional representations of the SF-based artist organic otherworldly paintings and were first revealed in this yearâs Burning Man.Â
Made in Berkeley, California at the Artworks Foundry, Martinez utilized a mixture of modern and ancient techniques in order to create the 9-foot, 2500-5000 lb., bronze sculptures. Two of the sculptures are reminiscent of molecules, while the third takes on the shape of a Torus energy field.Â
Each sculpture took three to four months to create. They were first designed using 3D Printing, and then transformed into the sculptures you see here using the ancient âlost waxâ technique, a technique pre-dating the Bronze Age (3,700 B.C.E.). The sculpture was welded from 70 different pieces, each ranging 2-3 feet in size. Part of the intent is to encourage a dialogue of placing more public sculptures in and around San Francisco.

Singer Lou Doillon Learns to Embrace the Selfie
To see more of Louâs photos, check out @loudoillon on Instagram. For more music stories, head to @music.
For the cover of her first album, Places, singer Lou Doillon (@loudoillon) used a professional photograph. And why wouldnât she? For someone whoâs modeled for everyone from Givenchy to Gap, she deserved an image that was best in class. But when it came time to design the artwork for her second album, Lay Low, she took a decidedly different route.
âEveryone has taken the selfie to whatever direction they wanted to take it to. I had fun having it as a kind of testimony of something bare,â she says, about the colorful album artwork of her sophomore record. âThere is something in a selfie that is really funny. There is the smart side of having flipped the image â itâs the image youâre seeing in the mirror; I feel like I know myself better that way. And also, itâs me taking a picture of me, so itâs not a collaboration or a point of view of another photographer. When I had to choose an album cover, the music was just so personal and so raw, I realized that all the [professional] pictures that I had were in a way too beautiful.â
