I thought I knew pressure and mental strength and then I started crew. Crew is such a mental sport. Both coxswains and rowers know the mental capacity you need to be succesful in this sport. Crew teaches you to grow a thick skin and learn to take criticisms. It takes everything about you and analyzes it down to your bones. Your coach will criticize you for every little thing that adds up to make the perfect stroke, the perfect rower and the perfect race. But we all know perfection is unacheivable. Thats the funny mind game crew plays with us, how sharp can your catches be? How strong can your legs get? How synchronized can your finishes be? How motivating can your calls be? Coaches understand this yet they continuously play up this mental game. They will put you in a higher boat and as you are starting to feel confidant they will put you back down to see how your mental power can hold up and how hard you actually work. If you go into an erg piece with a clear mind you come out with an amazing split. But those days that either you or someone else psychs you out, you can end up doing terribly. Crew seriously tests your ability to empty your thoughts and just GO. It teaches you to keep your mind open for corrections but close them to worries. And especially as a coxswain, although physically you are weak, your mental capacity is pushed to it’s limits. You have to think about five things at once and if you head into a practice or a race with the wrong mentality, your mood may affect and influence the rowers and the performance of the boat. It’s a sport built on ones ability to withstand pressure. It’s a sport built on learning to let your mind free. It’s a sport built on trust. Trust in your teammates. Trust in your abilities. Trust in yourself. This. is. rowing.
