Yesterday, a Saami elder saw her traditional home burnt down by the Swedish Enforcement Agency.
In short, the traditional turf hut, which had been put up by the elder on the same spot as an earlier turf hut dating back to the early 19th century, represented an active critique of the settler state’s colonial laws, which have all but stripped our people of our collective right to self-determination.
Consequently the turf hut had to go, and so, much like the drums of our ancestors, it was consumed by the flames of colonialism.
In order for a settler state to be successful, it has to make sure to silence and get rid of anything that challenges its self-appointed right to colonise another people’s ancestral homelands.
In clearing the land of any traces that prove that we, as Saami, have a tangible, lived and powerful connection to our ancestral homelands, the Settler State commits an act of physical and mental violence which, in turn, constitutes a re-writing and active white-washing of our history.
But we will not remain silent any more.
However, as a people, we cannot allow our outcry against what has happened today turn into a game of lateral violence. Any discussion that trivialises this tragedy by pitting reindeer herding Saami against every other Saami instead of attacking the colonial government and its laws, shifts the focus away from the real issue at hand, i.e. the colonial abuse that we – collectively as a people – suffer at the hands of the Settler State.
It’s easy enough to pit abused members of a people against each other - the State knows this all too well. Sweden has done its utmost to make sure that we continue to bicker amongst ourselves; while we’re busy questioning each others’ indigeneity and right to live on and off of our ancestral homelands, the government gleefully continues to bleed Saepmie dry.
Make no mistake, the Swedish government’s pockets are comfortably lined with our natural resources, but if we find ourselves fighting each other over access to our basic human rights, we won’t have the time to unite and challenge the one who stole our rights and lands in the first place.
