So, I am currently rewatching the Sarah Jane Adventures again (because watching these characters from my childhood is bringing me joy) and while I don’t think anyone is actually going to care enough to read this, I need to put this question into the universe on the slim chance someone might actually have an answer because it’s driving me insane…
Why is Luke not grounded by the Judoon (In Prisoner of the Judoon) but Rani and Clyde are?? It’s never really made clear, at least to me, from that episode whether Luke is included in the grounding or not, which I’d argue he should be because he was with the other two for all the moments with captain Tybo AND is the one who actually instigates the locking of Tybo in the lab to get rid of him… it doesn’t really make sense to me why he wouldn’t be included in the punishment.
Now, like I said, it’s not exactly clear from the moment it happens or in the reference it gets in The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith, which means he could very well be included… until you get to the episode The Empty Planet, where it is explicitly stated that only Clyde and Rani got grounded and that’s why they are the only two left on Earth. Which brings us back to the original question WHY THE HECK ISN’T LUKE ALSO GROUNDED?!?
What am I missing? I have watched these episodes multiple times now - he should have absolutely been included - he was the main perpetrator in acting against Tybos instructions because it was his mum they needed to save before the Judoon got their hands on Androvax!
The only other reasoning I have for it is that, the Empty Planet reference is just a retcon because they’d had to write Luke out of the main action of the series. Though, again, I’d argue that technically there was no way of them confirming whether or not Luke had been affected because there was no means of communicating with each other, plus Luke was over an hours drive away with no way of even knowing anyone else was still on earth. My point being I think there were perfectly plausible reasons for him to have still been stuck on earth but not been present for the action of the episode… is that a less concise narrative situation? Probably, but at least I wouldn’t be going insane trying to understand the logic of him NOT being grounded in the first place!!
Seriously, why was he not grounded?!
I know I’m missing something…
