Weirdly obsessed with Henry VIII and the stories around what happened with the Tudor family, this was a back shelf find at a bookstore and I'm so glad that I picked it up. The book itself is a very basic narration of the events that affected Henry's children and how they interacted with the world they were growing up in. The Children of Henry VIII is very well written: it is clear and succinct, and it is incredibly interesting. If you want to know the history behind the historical fiction, this is a great read for an introduction to that time.
What an adventure this is! The book itself is well written and a great addition to the growing YA collection of distopian/end of world novels. There are so many different ways it can unfold, and even though there are many predictable parts, I was surprised by a quick change or turn of events almost as often! I think the part about the book that really grabbed me and held on was the fact that this the Endgame is real: it is also in real life. Knowing that I was seeing clues, and sometimes recognizing them, and then also realizing there was something that I was not seeing but that I knew some...
Plucky and caring, Emma is more like a coming of age story than many of Austen's other novels. I definitely felt strongly for Emma as she started passing some of the same major milestones that I did: the bad part of getting too much into someone else's business, trying to hook up a friend with no success, realizing the reason why you're acting crazy is because you like that boy...I feel like Emma is the Austen novel that can connect the most with teens today.

Absolutely gorgeous. Gregson has a way with choosing the most perfect words, and pictures of the text on different types of paper made this a fascinating experience. The first thing I did was read it again!

No wonder this is the novel that put Isabel Allende on the map. THOFS is an entrancing story that sucks you in to four generations of a family. Her characters are raw and real and you understand every decision they make. It is a spectacular story that will suck you in and not let go.
A close friend saw me as I was feverishly devouring the last pages of this novel, and decided to share his opinion that "Austen novels are soap operas." Upon reflection, there is much merit to that statement. The close calls, the relatives, the exchanging beaus and the drama foreshadow what our current soap operas are like. However, I believe that in saying that, you are reducing the novel to something less than what it is. This is the first time I've read this book, and I loved every moment. TCP is an entrancing story masterfully told. Walker does not beat around the bush, but jumps straight in to the hard stuff. Celie is a wonderful character and her emotions become so personal. I think my favorite moment was when she and Shug discuss God and religion. There are so many good and big and real moments in this novel, it makes sense why it is on the banned book list.
I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don't notice it.
