Yeah for me, I list Steven Universe because it has explicitly used yellowface in the show and blackface in the art books as well as general racism with the whole concept of a human zoo combined with redeeming intergalactic dictators. The yellowface was personally triggering for me. There’s also the pedo shit that goes on behind the scenes as well as racist remarks by the creators.
As an Asian American, I personally find a lot of problems with ATLA as well in terms of racism in casting and ableism with Azula’s storyline as well as issues with addressing imperialism. But for me, I don’t have it on my mental DNI list because it has less issues to me than SU has.
I still find ATLA problematic and I criticize it a lot on my main blog and this one. But ATLA doesn’t trigger me like SU does.
Like for me, I feel like I could make ATLA better. But SU to me is a lost cause without scrapping it all entirely since the very problems of the show hinge on the Diamonds’ redemption.
ATLA has many characters if not most characters played by White people and most of the crew is also white men

Yellowface was used with the character of the jade fusion. Specifically narrow eyes and buck teeth. One of my first posts talked about yellowface in Steven Universe. Even though neither of Jade’s components had narrow eyes, the fusion had narrow eyes. Jade is a very culturally charged gemstone for Asians like me. Yellowface caricatures typically consisted of narrow eyes and bad teeth, which is exactly what happened with the jade fusion.
There’s little Larimar as well who also has very narrow eyes and speaks with a creepy voice and reminds me very much of Asian caricatures.
I am frustrated with the problems of ATLA especially with how most of the cast and crew were white and that Iroh’s voice actor was replaced by a white man after the original Japanese voice actor died.
I’m angry about a lot of things in ATLA and I agree that it is problematic media. I also disagree with Iroh’s redemption and how he barely got any consequences for his imperialism. Although cultural consultants were used, it still was an unsatisfactory job to me and I feel like it could have been done significantly better by own voices.
I’m not Jewish, so I won’t discuss the Diamonds.

I mean you seem to be a troll account but on the off chance that you are asking this in sincerity, I’ll bite.
For the record, I’m not US American. I’m a passport-holding South Korean citizen. And I will be speaking on the entire Hetalia franchise (webcomic, manga, game, anime) and not just the anime.
The author - Hidekaz Himaruya - is a known anti-Korean nationalist. Like one of his comics before Hetalia was called MoeKan (literally: Moe Korea) where the Korean protagonist was portrayed as angry at Japan for no reason and violently attacks the Japanese character every chance she gets. If you know anything about Asian history - Koreans have a valid reason for disliking Japan considering the decades of brutal colonization where Koreans were murdered, raped, and had their culture forcibly erased. But Himaruya literally portrays this sensitive issue as “Korean youth are taught by their parents to hate Japan for no reason [because Japan didn’t do anything wrong] and are violent and nonsensical.” Sena, the main character, is dressed in really outdated hanbok (the manga is set in the 2000s and was written when he himself was studying abroad in New York) while in contrast the Japanese self-insert character is wearing modern Western attire. This is… literally one of the talking points of Japanese far-right nationalism where Japanese right-wingers believe that Korea was uncivilized and only found modernity through Japanese occupation.
The main character from MoeKan would go onto become an inspiration for APH Korea. He actually thought about just using her character again for Hetalia but changed his mind and made APH Korea male with most of the same traits. Again, Korea is portrayed as an idiot younger brother type who claims that he invented things for no reason. (Notable is the one strip where APH Korea claims that he invented hanzi and APH Japan muses “if you could read kanji you wouldn’t say that”. No one Korean would actually claim this. I know because I literally went through the South Korean schooling system and learned Chinese characters in class. If you actually also look up the history of kanji… you’ll find that it’s a Korean scholar from Baekje who brought it over to Japan to teach people how to read/write.) “Koreans claim they invented everything” is literally an anti-Korean stereotype in Japan. Much like how “China is obsessed with bootlegs” is an anti-China stereotype.
There’s literally a strip where APH Korea demands APH Japan apologize because he has photo proof of APH Japan being bad. Japan asks to see the photo and the brutal colonization of Korea is portrayed as “Korea and Japan getting along when they were children”. This is explicit historical revisionism. Murder, rape, and cultural genocide is whitewashed as “that time Korean and Japan got along but Korea still wants to complain about it.”
Hetalia’s treatment of colonized-colonizer relationships has ALWAYS been shitty. Even beyond how Himaruya portrays Korea - Seychelles, an African country that was colonized by England in real life is shown with…. a collar around her neck. That England puts on her. A white personification of a colonizing nation is literally depicted putting a COLLAR on a black personification of the colonized country. Not only this straight up minimizing colonization but also… literally… makes a joke out of the fact that historically Black people have been forced into chattel slavery.
Colonized countries are almost always portrayed as obsessed with their colonizers or secretly in love with them (Korea-Japan, Belarus-Russia, etc). And while other countries’ traumas are treated as comedic material (Korea’s sovereignty over Dokdo being portrayed as Korea sexually assaulting Japan’s body, the invasion of China being played off as a physical gag) - Japanese trauma is never treated the same way.
Could you imagine if the author decided to portray the atomic bombings in such a “light-hearted” way? “Japan-kun, you’re out of control!! Take this, ATOMIC PUNCH HYAA!!!” “Itaaaaai, America-kun hidoi yo!!!!” No of course not, because making light of a literal war crime where their are survivors still to this day is fucking disgusting! But apparently it’s totally fine to do that to countries that Japan actually colonized!
It’s literally Japanese nationalist propaganda that excuses imperialism as a fun joke. And the brunt of the people speaking out about this have been Korean, Jewish, and Black people - including Afro-Latinos who were still called gringos for disliking Hetalia despite being Latino!
This literally isn’t even covering how countries like America, Canada, and Australia are portrayed as white people which is Indigenous erasure. Or how the author has a chronic problem of anthropomorphizing majority Black countries with super light skin. Or how anthropomorphizing NAZI GERMANY in itself is a terrible premise!
There have literally been academic papers written in Korean about how revisionist Hetalia is so if you’re under the false assumption that it’s only US Americans “complaining about made-up SJW issues”, you’re wrong and I can happily link you to Korean twitter threads written in Korean by Koreans living in Korea that are discussing all the problems with Hetalia.
It’s a satire, of humanized countries portrayed as stereotypes, U.S is white because the countries are portrayed as how most of the population in respective countries look like.
The thing about the author being racist towards Korea, looks like the Homestuck problem, I know that portraying Korea like that… It’s pretty shitty, and I understand that you ppl have your reasons to hate Japan.

And I’m telling you that it’s not “satire”. Satire punches up. Satire criticizes power structures. It’s not satire to repeat actual existing right-wing propaganda.
Hetalia is literally written from a colonizer’s perspective with Genuine anti-Korean, anti-Chinese ideas that a Japanese nationalist wants to normalize as a form of soft power. You have to understand that these things aren’t “just in the past” for a lot of people. A lot of this rhetoric being ACTIVELY used by Japanese right-wingers TODAY. It’s not like WWII was forever ago. My own grandparents grew up under Japanese rule and were force to learn Japanese under threat of violence. There are actual Korean, Chinese, Filipino, etc “comfort woman” survivors living TODAY that haven’t received reparations from Japan for being kidnapped and forced into sexual slavery. Trying to moe-fy actual history when that history directly informs your current political relations with said countries because your government refuses to make amends and acknowledge war crimes is a huge mis-step. It’s not “satire” when Japanese government is literally known for historical revisionism. It’s not “satire” when Japanese foreign exchange students have literally reported being surprised when they went to study abroad and found out about things like the Rape of Nanking and comfort women because their school system refuses to teach their imperialist history.
I was on Twitter when the tag started up and I’ve personally witnessed an Afro-Latine person LIVING in Lat-Am get harassed by people in that tag claiming that they weren’t REALLY Latino and calling them a gringo because they didn’t like Hetalia. It’s gotten to a point that people are literally denying the existence of Afro-Latinos altogether like in this screencap:
No one is calling gringo a slur. People are just pointing out that using the word to try to silence people’s LEGITIMATE criticisms is kind of illogical because being non-Latino has nothing to do with how Hetalia might have harmed someone. Especially when non-Latino Koreans and non-Latino Jewish people are actively harmed by the anti-Korean and anti-Semitic views of the Hetalia fandom. And the fact of the matter is ACTUAL Latino people are also being wrongly called gringo by Hetalia fans just because they disagree with them.
Not only that, I’ve seen Hetalia fans encourage White Russians to call POC “gringos” for disliking Hetalia.
If you haven’t seen legitimate criticism in the hashtag, that’s because the tag was a reaction to actual criticism. I encourage you to try searching for “Hetalia” on Twitter and reading the actual threads from Korean, Jewish, and Black people who have already shared the ways Hetalia is harmful instead of relying on a hashtag literally meant to be an echo chamber for Hetalia fans patting themselves on the back for “telling off the SJW Americans”.
Frankly, I’m not gonna shit on people for having liked Hetalia when they’re younger. I think it’s insidious that the source material itself was made to make people think colonialism was just a fun anime joke but that’s not the fault of minors who didn’t know any better. I’m just upset with people who’ve seen posts like mine describing the ways in which Hetalia espouses actual propaganda and is harmful to several communities and still decide to dig their heels in and claim that I’m just overreacting. okay so i keep thinking about how men’s “nerdiness” in media can function as both a subversion and an affirmation of toxic masculinity. on the one hand you have the challenge of toxic masc: men who are thinner or larger than the average, smarter than the average, they don’t have good social lives, they’re not conventionally desirable to women. and we’ve gotten to the point where we have 3d representations of nerdiness as a good or lovable thing, so that’s nice. but then you have the validation of toxic masc: the subtextual aspiration toward or eventual achievement of chadness, which may end in a makeover, weight loss/muscle gain, getting a girlfriend etc.
and you notice how several archetypes of men are essentially like not in this picture at all–ie black, latino, queer etc men unless the media in question is specifically about some struggle of oppression. and when moc ARE present, they are not only 9/10 times the token asian (feeding into the model minority myth) but also they are the wingmen, the even less attractive foils to the main white kid who struggles to interact with women but in the end inevitably ends up with one. and what’s worse, the concept of these moc appealing to someone on any social level is often a running gag throughout the show.
so this is where misogyny, toxic masculinity, and racism intersect. first of all, we have chad masculinity set up as the ultimate goal for all the men within this nerd framework. STEM/econ type interests somehow become uncute in these fictional universes despite the fact that STEM fields are all heavily male-dominated and profitable irl, and we’re conditioned to think of men and specifically STEM dudes as super smart compared to women. peak masculinity, you’d think. entonces, i guess sporty himbos are the ideal here? idk it gets complex bc u know gender is fake and thus we’re all trying to achieve non-existent, self-contradictory goals to adhere to our gender role.
so all else failing for these dudes (ie “subpar” physical appearance and social life), “getting the girl” becomes the thing that validates the white nerd’s chad masculinity. misogyny and objectification: the girl is more concept than person, a prize, part of an aesthetic. in order for the white nerd to shed his constant state of emasculation and Get Her, he has to have the asian nerd as a foil. the asian nerd is always MORE socially inept. he’s on one extreme incel-ish, creepy, and desperate, or on the other extreme super distant and absorbed in his intellectual projects or maybe he just can’t speak english, which takes him out of the field of play entirely bc xenophobia. he doesn’t get an opportunity to be a FLESHED OUT PERSON, let alone a viable love interest, bc we’re too busy necessarily emasculating him in order for the white nerd to achieve this fucked up cishetero patriarchal ideal where somehow being a nerd isn’t cute???? and it absolutely comes in the form of being neurotic or socially clueless!!!!!!!!!!! so yea in conclusion normalize the diversity of masculinity and stop making it an evolution toward chadness
