There’s a lot to criticize Shadowhunters about in regards of how it is portraying its characters of color… A lot. But Magnus’ characterization is not one of those things (so far).
Ever since he appeared on screen, Magnus has been nothing but helpful, loving, loyal, compassionate and caring towards Alec (and almost every other character he encountered).
Never did he touch Alec without permission in season one, and he was the one who had been vulnerable and hesitant about having sex in 2x07. Moreover, he still hasn’t initiated the Malec kiss on screen (if we don’t count the “Sleeping Beauty” kiss in 1x03). And yet people keep posting “meta” after “meta” about Magnus being a “manipulative predator” praying on Alec’s “innocence”.
So, where is this perception of Magnus is coming from? The answer is simple. Some people just can’t see characters of color outside of the dated racist stereotypes that Western [white] culture and media has been perpetuating for ages.
Fu Manchu: “evil” East Asian
Thirteen novels, three short stories, and one novelette have been written about Fu Manchu and Sir Denis Nayland Smith, the British agent determined to stop him. Millions of copies have been sold in the United States with publication in British and American periodicals and adaptations to film, comics, radio, and television. Due to his enormous popularity, the “image of Fu Manchu has been absorbed into American consciousness as the archetypal East Asian villain.” In The Insidious Doctor Fu-Manchu, Sax Rohmer introduces Fu Manchu as a cruel and cunning man, with a face like Satan, who is essentially the “Yellow Peril incarnate”.
Sax Rohmer inextricably tied the evil character of Fu Manchu to all East Asians as a physical representation of the Yellow Peril, attributing the villain’s evil behavior to his race. Rohmer also adds an element of mysticism and exoticism to his portrayal of Fu Manchu. Fu Manchu contrives unnecessarily elaborately creative and cruel methods of murdering his victims, replete with allegedly East Asian methods or elements in his murders such as “death by silk rope” -- none of which have any basis in reality. Despite Fu Manchu’s specifically Manchu ethnicity, his evil and cunning are pan-Asian attributes again reinforcing Fu Manchu as representational of all East Asian people. (X)
Again, for the people in the back: this “predatory” vision of Magnus is rooted in Anti-Asian racism. Whether it’s conscious or subconscious.
Racism is not always derogatory slurs, swastikas or white hoods. Racism in everyday life (also in fandom spaces) is presented in casual micro-aggressions and putting people of color in the metaphorical boxes of harmful stereotypes.

One of Hayakawa’s earliest role that would eventually cement his fame was The Cheat (1915) which was one of the examples of casting non-white men as predatory and presenting the innocence of white women.
There were several movies before and after it that were similar in tone, where Asian men were simultaneously sexually aggressive and posed a threat to the innocent, delicate white women. (a quote by @stardust-rain)
In 1949, Sessue Hayakawa lamented, “My one ambition is to play a hero.” He never got such chance.
“The Cheat” came out a full century ago. Harry’s Magnus is a hero, a romantic hero. Harry plays a full-rounded character who is compassionate, loving, kind, who is allowed to be vulnerable while being strong and powerful. And yet, some people can’t see this. They only see a predatory Asian villain the one that Sessue Hayakawa played back in 1915.
This is what we call fandom racism.

The Limejuice Mystery or Who Spat in Grandfather’s Porridge? (1930)
The Limejuice Mystery or Who Spat in Grandfather’s Porridge is a british marionette short film directed by Jack Harrison and produced by Joseph Seiden with music by Philip Braham. The film starts in an opium den where a woman is forced to dance for the inebriated opium users. Things escalate into a fight, causing one of the patrons to pull a gun and kill almost everyone, and Herlock Sholmes, an obvious parody of Sherlock Holmes, I’d called in to solve the murder mystery.
The film is notable for being one of the earliest known puppetry films to feature synchronised sound.

gal g*dot is pro-idf / supports the removal of palestinians from israel. she is unapologetically pro-israel and thus supports the brutal, abusive and corrupt idf ( full article here ). lesser known is that there are also allegations from an ex-roommate of hers that she was emotionally abusive and partook in severe victim blaming many years ago in milan ( another article here ). while it is possible that she has grown / learnt from this, she has not apologised nor commented on these actions which had a severe psychological impact on the victim.
