So it turned out, in this tiny ass town, there was actually a cool ass person in it. One. One cool ass person. One person currently setting up a little stand with some wares to trade.

One cool ass person with her ears full of holes.

Rowan made their way across the path, their eyes wide, a little transfixed by both the length of the woman’s hair and the glint of her ears. They barely even noticed the fact that she was so busy setting things up.

Their admiration could not be contained.

“I fucking love your hair,” they said breathlessly.

“Nope, just Doctor policy. In this line of work, someone’s gotta be the one to make people smile.” Though, judging from the patient’s expression, Dominic had a long way to go before he was anything close to a comedian. Dominic removed the gauze and took a look at the wound, chuckling at the peach juice comment. 

“Well, we can flush the wound and, honestly, we might be okay without the stitches. The cut isn’t that deep, and we have surgical tape that can hold the wound together while it closes. Only thing is, it’ll leave a bit of a larger scar. Heals a bit quicker though.”

Dominic looked up at the patient with a quirked brow. “So, what’ll it be? Tape it up, or stitch it up? I’ll let that one be your call.” He placed the gauze back on the hand and held it to apply pressure. 

“Hmph. Maybe try being a clown next time.” They rolled their eyes. “Big red nose for your patients. That’ll get some laughs.” Would it be for his nose or his face? No reason to clarify.

Still. The options they presented were meaningful ones, and Rowan tipped their head back with a heavy sigh as they stared at the ceiling. “...I mean, scars are pretty bitchin’. Dunno why somebody would choose not to have a scar.”

Still. They had bills to pay. “Is either choice gonna prevent me from working with my hands with food? Something I might accidentally rip open even in my gloves?”

Normally, the day at the clinic was slow and without incident. It was a stark change from the hustle and bustle of the city life that Dominic used to live, but he quite honestly preferred Coriander Town’s quaint lifestyle over that of the city. However, no town was without their incident. The nurse had come into his office in a panic, alerting him that a patient was waiting for them. 

Dominic rose to his feet and hurried into the waiting room where a new member of the community was seated, red soaking the paper towel they held against their hand. 

“Geez, I don’t think the old ladies around town would appreciate that, now would they?” Dominic chuckled and ushered for the bleeding patient to come with him. “Let’s go, back to the exam room. How’d you go about cutting your hand, hm?” He lead the way, grabbing some gauze from a cabinet and pulling on some gloves as he walked. Once in the room, Dominic switched out the paper towel for the gauze, applying pressure as he held their hand, eyeing the little pin on their shirt. Good to know, good to know.

As the person came into the room and spoke to them with a laugh, Rowan quirked their brow. “Is it office policy to laugh at your bleeding patients?” Rowan snarked. They stood and followed him regardless, rolling their eyes behind his back.

They hopped up on the examination bed, straining to reach, then sighed as they offered their hand. “I was juggling knives.” They gave him a deadpan stare, then pursed their lips. “...fine. I was chopping fruit. Probably got some peach juice in there. No big deal.”

They kicked their feet gently, an old habit to break. “What do you think? Stitches? Take the whole hand off?”

Stupid. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Their first full week working at the bakery, and not only had they just put a knife through their own hand while cutting fruits for a pie filling, but they’d caused trouble for the very baker who’d taken them under their wing. In the middle of the rush hour, and the baker was sending them to the doctor to get their hand checked out. Incredible.

They sat in the waiting room after checking in, lips pursed in frustration, and tapped their foot on the ground while continuing to hold the blood-soaked paper towel around their hand to soak up the blood. It hadn’t stopped coming. They wondered if they might need stitches.

At the sound of a door opening and the sight of someone coming into the area with a doctor’s coat, they huffed. “Finally. About to start making a slip-and-slide out here with my own blood.”
