“Th…Three weeks?” Asugi couldn’t believe what he was told. That explained why his body was so sore. “…. You… Have you been here this whole time?”
“More or less...” Saizo sighed, finally seeming to calm himself now that it was sinking in that this was real. “I was the one who brought you hear and have been the one looking for any sign of recovery once the healers were able to get you stable...”
He sighed, shaking his head. “Asugi... My deepest apologies. I couldn’t defend you from that monster... You nearly perished because I couldn’t get to you fast enough...”
painintopcwer:
Asugi’s eyes widened and a groan escaped him as his father embraced him. He was silenced in shock, not used to hearing or even seeing his father in such a state. He couldn’t remember if he saw him like this when his mother… “P…Pops…. Th… this hurts….” He whimpered before patting his father’s back. “Pl…Please loosen up…”
“A... Asugi...” Saizo finally choked out, meeting the boy’s eyes. “Asugi, you’ve been asleep for... three weeks.”
He sobbed again, trying in vain to wipe the tears away. “I can’t believe it... Thank the Dawn Dragon for your safety...” He kissed the boy’s cheeks and hugged him close again in gratitude.
painintopcwer:
“…………..Hey. Pops. You okay there?” His father never looked so… unkept before. He weakly reached a hand to Saizo’s hair, petting him gently, unable to do much more. “…… Pops…?”
Saizo swore he was dreaming. He heard his son’s voice again, calling to him from somewhere... light. And warm. He almost swore he could see the boy’s mother as well, standing beside him and looking as serene as ever. Gentle hands combing through his hair, beckoning him forward. He felt ready to step through...
But then. His eye opened. And he saw two curious eyes peering down at him, apparently confused. Saizo felt as though he couldn’t speak, couldn’t move. Could only stare straight up at the boy he thought he’d be forced to bury if the poor lad didn’t wake up soon.
Was he still dreaming? Saizo, shocked completely numb, reached forward to feel at the boy’s face. Then, at his own pulse. It... It couldn’t be. This couldn’t be real.
It was.
He couldn’t even speak. Couldn’t utter the boy’s name as he rushed forward to embrace him tightly, already breaking down into heart wrenching sobs.
Nothing else mattered. He was alive.
Alive.
“…………………….” Asugi paused as he slowly sat up, wincing at how sore his body felt. “………..How long have I been out?”
“...”
Saizo was sleeping on the young man’s lower legs, red stubble lining his jaw and cheeks, hair carelessly left in a dirty, unkempt, greasy hair do. He didn’t seem to hear his son, caught up in a deep sleep next the the infirmary table.
fairelance:
“To me,” she corrected him coldly, “he is still someone I care for deeply, and if I cannot be there the rest of his life, then at least I can be there for him in this moment.” She boiled at the very idea of him thinking this was anything like chasing after a true and proper stranger; oddly similar face or no.
Yet no matter how stoic she appeared, deep within she was crumbling. Her fault. This was her fault. He was in pain and clinging to the last remnants of her folly: thinking that she could make it out of the war alive. Say nothing of how his words did find a hold under her skin, how she could only hold up so long against them. This was a man she loved, after all. The slings and arrows of strangers did little, but the voice of the familiar pierced the thickest of walls.
She swallowed her feelings down, whole and raw. Now was not the time for them. She could let herself be hurt later.
“He needs his father, but what if he needs his mother?” She asked, “What if he comes to me, what will you do then to stop him? Because I will not and cannot turn him away, and you know as well as I do how stubborn he can be.” In truth, Asugi had already come to her, but now was not the time. Not when his father heeded no reason but his temper.
“If my feelings mean nothing, then fine. What about his? Shigure’s?”
Saizo looked as if he were poised to attack her any second, weight tilted forward, fists clenched, stance wide and defiant. It was clear he perceived her as nothing more than a threat.
“You ask your questions as if it’s supposed to provide some sort of moral quandary. Of course I would stop both of my sons from seeking you out. Because, at the end of the day, when this whole silly war from another goddamn world sorts itself out, where will you be, then? Do you plan on coming home with us? CAN you come home with us? Or are you just a wandering revenant tied to this world that doesn’t know how to let go of the mortal realm?”
He shook his head. “Do not answer that. In truth, I do not care to know. The point is this: my boys and I have already experienced that soul-rending pain before. With their mother. MY Azura. My... dearly beloved wife.”
For a moment, his voice wavered, and he turned his sharp gaze onto that of his comatose child in order to force the tear he felt welling in his eye back into his idiotic skull. It’s not her, Saizo... You saw her die. It can’t be her. Do not be fooled.
He closed his eye and took a deep breath, the tension slowly seeping out of his shoulders and his stance all over. “... We’ve already been through that once. I will do everything in my power to ensure they do not have to experience such trauma a second time. If you truly, selflessly cared about them... You would do the same.”
@fairelance answered your ask “[@bitterestest-ninja, to you-know-who] Saizo barged into the...”
Perhaps the worst of such cruelty was that Saizo was perhaps correct. Maybe they were not the true mother, father, son that they knew, but facets of the three of them scattered across time and converging in an unfamiliar space.
Askr was a cruel, ugly place from that perspective.
Azura did, however, relent, and carefully laid Asugi back down on his infirmary bed. She hadn’t seen high nor hair of his father, otherwise she would have talked with him to prevent this misunderstanding. She knew Saizo meant well, even like this, but also knew letting him carry on in ceaseless rage wasn’t something she would let him carry on with, either.
“If you think I mock you,” she began, “Then you have my apologies for expressing relief that my son is alive and has hope to recover.” Her tone was firm and even, refusing to yield even an inch. “He may not be the exact Asugi I carried and bore, you may not be the exact man I married, but know that all I care for is his well being.”
She was only a woman, she could be scared, but her husband- a fit of fire and fury or no -was not something she would ever be afraid of. Not when her child needed her more.
She stepped aside to let him tend to Asugi, but did not lose more ground than that. “I know it’s much to ask for your trust, Saizo, but I will. Your anger is the way you channel your concern, I’ve accepted that, but targeting it at me when it should very well be placed at the feet of that monster is misguided and you know it.”
“DID YOU NOT HEAR ME?!” Saizo snapped in a voice that was more snarl than voice. “He is NOT your son. To you, he is the same as any other wretch that wanders these halls. If you’d call him your son, why not that lad Gaius for the sake of it, hmmm? After all, close enough, RIGHT?!”
He glared at her. “I saw my wife dissolve before my very eyes. I will carry that pain with me to my grave. You are nothing but a cheap imitation of the one who stole my heart, as I am naught but a stranger to you and this boy is someone you’ve never met. He and Shigure -- MY Shigure -- are all that I have in this world, and I will NOT sully the memory of their mother by allowing some doppelganger to waltz in as if nothing ever happened!”
He waved her off. “Find someone else to shower with your concern, witch. My boy needs me, and you’re nothing but a distraction.” If she really thought he couldn’t resent both her and the beast that nearly took his son from him, she had another thing coming. He had a bottomless well of hatred just waiting to boil over at the moment!

The healers went to work, laying the boy down, his eyes closing as they began the process. The two bite marks on his neck slowly closed, as if never there. However, he did not respond when one of the healers spoke to him, causing a bit of alarm. “Perhaps there was too much blood loss?” One muttered. “He’s still alive though…” Another replied.
“We’re just going to have to keep an eye on him…. The summoner once told me people go into this state when they go through something horrible.” Sakura replied.
“Sounds like the boy is doomed!” Azama chuckled, shaking his head. “Such a tragedy! Can I be the one to tell Saizo? Just imagine how he’d react!”
painintopcwer:
Clouded eyes looked up towards the man holding him, finally registering that there was someone there. He couldn’t move, but he felt the air surging around him as his father rushed off. “t…………..father…… tried to…. find you.” His voice was quieter than he hoped, even weaker than he ever wanted to sound.
“Keep your voice down,” Saizo murmured softly, glancing around to ensure he wasn’t being tailed. With the corridor seeming clear, he added softly. “I know... I love you, son.”
He pressed the cloth closer to his neck, racing for the infirmary as quickly as he could. He burst in, sending the women (and Lucius) scrambling away out of fear. He simply held out the limp form of his injured boy, trembling.
“Help him...” was all he could say, voice quivering with emotion.
A hushed silence fell over them as they tried to piece together what had happened. And then, mocking laughter sounded from somewhere at the back of the room.
“Good heavens, Saizo, what have you done to him THIS time?” Azama tutted, easily taking Asugi into his arms. “Alright, ladies, with me!”
There was a mad scramble to grab and sort everyone’s staves as Saizo pressed himself against a nearby wall and slowly sank to the ground.
Asugi...
painintopcwer:
Asugi was limp in the older male’s arms, eyes barely open but clouded over. He didn’t even respond when his father placed the cloth to his bleeding neck, which kept bleeding profusely. However, despite how weak he was, he was still breathing, but barely.
Still alive. He was still alive. In those heart-stopping moments, it was all that mattered.
Valter regained his senses soon enough, and yanked the knife out of his neck with a howl of rage. “SHOW YOURSELF!” came the horrid shriek as he swiped his Lance the empty clouds of swirling mist.
Saizo knew that he couldn’t counter whatever Valter was -- nor did he have the time to try. Asugi was hanging onto his last threads of life! Though he was unsure he could even out speed this demon, the cover provided should prove thick enough until he was a considerable distance away. Wasting no time, he clutched Asugi tight to his body, and raced for the infirmary, his heart pounding in his chest.
painintopcwer:
Asugi jumped when the other bit into his neck, his hand dropping his dagger. He tried to push the other away, but he quickly felt his strength dwindling. “Wh…What is….” He moved a hand to grip the other’s hand, attempting to pull it away one last time before it dropped to his side.
Valter grinned with delight as he felt the warm liquid trickling down his chin. Good, the venom was working its magic, making him unable to struggle. There was no need to rush this process -- in fact, he quite liked drawing out the last, fruitless struggle for life as long as he could. But, unfortunately for him, he was quite rudely interrupted before he could carry on for long.
Valter suddenly recoiled from Asugi, shrieking with pain, shock and confusion as a searing hot knife was thrust into his own neck. Then there was an eruption of smoke, obscuring his vision. Two strong arms effortlessly caught Asugi before he could hit the ground, and a cloth pressed against the gaping wound.
Saizo cradled the boy against his chest, panicking as he spared a moment to check whether the boy was still breathing -- still conscious. Had he been too late?
It was unlike him to take any personal time off for himself. But he could make the exception this year. After all, it wasn’t just his day, was it? Kaze usually got to see so little of him, with his life shrouded in secrecy for the sake of his brother, his liege, his nation.
Certainly, he deserved better.
In order to force himself to leave duty behind, he forewent most of his battledress and instead decided to dress himself in a simple blue yukata with dark stripes. Though he loathed to do it, he even left his mask behind. Today wasn’t about Saizo. It was about the birth of Tatsuo.
Before he left, he caught a sight of himself in his mirror, and was momentarily startled by it. A grey hair, huh? he mused to himself as he inspected the rogue strand closer. Heh... I’ll be the spitting image of the Fourth before I know it...
Fully dressed, and fully prepared to ignore the unwelcome advances of multiple women, he journeyed out to find his brother and treat him to a feast of celebration.
painintopcwer:
Those last words stuck with Asugi, eyes widening as he processed them. It caused the tears to form in his eyes again. If there was one thing to knock Asugi to tears right away, it was his mother. “…..You…” He felt his chest tighten up and he closed his eyes, turning his head to the side. “…. You won’t lose me….”
Saizo nodded, and hugged the boy again. “Come get me. If you or Shigure or Shiro are in trouble, come get me or the summoner or Ryoma -- whoever. He’s not a threat you can deal with alone.”
He took a shaky breath. “The Shigure you met earlier is very lucky he’s still alive from the last time a Valter went rogue. Why any of those blasted creatures still remain in these halls, I’ll never know...”
He hadn’t even recognized him when the last rescue party had been successful. It wasn’t his son, and yet... It hurt to see how much he had suffered. The thought of that happening to Asugi -- HIS Asugi...
No. It would never happen. He would protect them both. There was no other possibility.
painintopcwer:
“There is only one way I would even initiate combat with that guy. But I doubt it will happen. So unless that one thing happens, I won’t engage combat. Promise.”
“THAT’S NOT WHAT I SAID!” Saizo snapped, hive voice suddenly welling with passion.
He had to force himself to take a deep breath, and shake his head. “... Asugi. Please. Please. I’m begging you to listen to reason.” His voice wavered slightly as he tried to choke through his final words. “You’re... All I have left of her now. Please, I... I couldn’t bear to lose you, too. Please.”
painintopcwer:
“I already wanna stay away from him….” Asugi grumbled, looking to the side.
Saizo grabbed the boy by the shoulders and looked into his eyes. His expression was wild. Almost... Fearful.
“Asugi. I’m serious. I’m as serious as I’ve ever been. Promise me that if you see him in the corridors, you’ll use your ninja training to escape detection. Promise that you’ll come get me again if you have trouble shaking him. Promise me that you’ll never, EVER attempt to engage that man in combat.”
painintopcwer:
“Uh… blueish green hair….. Weird chin…”
TEAL hair? Oh no... There was only one man that could be.
“Valter...” the man growled, bristling visibly. “Listen to me, Asugi. Stay away from that man. He is very dangerous and impulsive. I know you think me to be overprotective of you, but you MUST listen this once. He. Will. Kill. You. Or worse.”
painintopcwer:
“I don’t know the guy ran off but… Jeez he had his tongue out and all that. And I heard someone yell run so I did!”
Saizo stroked his chin. “His... Tongue? Can you describe this man? I don’t have very much to go by based on your description alone...”
