“Colored person” or “colored people” refers to nonwhite people as *people* whereas “colored” drops the personhood—often used as “the coloreds” (what villains were called in Birth of a Nation). What’s more is the word colored is considered archaic these days because it is an act of identity erasure; people are Black, Boricua, Cambodian American, etc., not everything nonwhite lumped together in one amalgamation. If you don’t know why I bring this up you’re better off not knowing. Also: colorful bibimbap from my work dinner with an author and their agent at the hotel restaurant the night before StokerCon. Yes, “colorful bibimbap,” because even something made for consumption should exist fully defined—imagine the horribly lazy writing, and resultant confusion, from everything not white in a narrative just being referred to as colored without nouns attached LOL. https://instagr.am/p/Cd6b9OCv08C/

These workshops were planned keeping in mind that securing mere funding for a book doesn’t translate into having a body of work that provokes us to think about Caste and Queerness. Dalit queer youth continue to face structural barriers when it comes to creative writing opportunities, to take our voices seriously. We hardly see ourselves on the bookshelf, or in the publishing industry. As a community response to these realities we would like to host generative workshops with established writers from the community to encourage more dalit queer authors to write. She was also one of the four to receive the poetry award for TORTURED WILLOWS alongside @christinasng, Angela Yuriko Smith and Gene Flynn (Yuriko Publishing).
