Always dress for success
I was raised on this phrase. I used to hate my mother for constantly making me dress up -- for school pictures, to travel, to drop of resumes, etc.
Since the apple doesn't fall far from the tree, I am now a firm believer in this phrase myself. If you don't take yourself and your personal appearance seriously, nobody else is going to either.
This year, I've had the opportunity to fly quite a bit, and took it upon myself to conduct a little experiment. I found that if I flew in yoga pants and a sweatshirt, flight attendants and fellow travelers were not as nice and friendly as when I flew in business-casual attire.

If you haven't noticed, my life lately has revolved around looking for a summer internship. I follow a fabulous blog -- Jane Has A Job -- full of tips and tricks to being the best professional one can be. She has a Workwear Board that I especially love. It consists of modern business styles appropriate for any young professional woman.
These days, it's okay to pair a bright shirt with a pencil skirt, or some fun jewelry. It's not your mother's black pencil skirt and white blouse anymore! It is possible to be a professional fashionista.
