the morning in [ james & sirius ]
j-pottter:
Spending the last few years at Hogwarts had given James a rather annoying habit. He was used to sleeping in a room full of people, if not sharing a bed directly. Maybe it was weird, but no one really commented on it and James was content with it. However, this had begun to leave a void when the school year ended and he was to go back to the Potter home. James adored his parents beyond measure, but his family home was massive and the rooms weren’t filled with any siblings. This was fine, most of the time. James enjoyed being the center of attention but by Merlin, was it lonely.
Fortunately for James, though in some aspects unfortunately for Sirius, his best mate had turned up after being booted from his family home earlier in the summer. His parents had been over joyed, peppering Sirius with kisses and food and insisting he stay however long he’d like and wherever he’d like to settle down. A few doors down from James, Sirius had picked out a room and made a little place for himself amongst the Potters. He liked it, liked having Sirius’ presence so close.
Which is why James often trotted down the hallway after tossing and turning for a few hours in his own bed, pillows and blankets being drug behind him like a toddler. He did as he did in the past, creating a little nest of pillows and blankets to sleep in. Why he needed someone around was a mystery. The sounds of someone else breathing, the presence of another person, whatever it was.
He was just about to settle down when he heard Sirius move around, followed immediately by his sleepy voice telling him to get off the floor. James didn’t need to be told twice, and he was off the ground and kicking the blankets away before climbing in alongside the other wizard. “It’s the novelty,” he shrugged, sliding an arm around Sirius’ shoulder and settling in comfortably. “Like when the muggles do that camping thing. Rough it, y’know. Pretend to be a poor bastard for once. It humbles me,” James continued, grabbing his glasses off his face and tossing them somewhere on the bed to be found in the morning. “Now that you’ve said it, I’ll be here nightly. Mum’ll think we’re up to no good.”
Sirius had always enjoyed the company of another in his bed. It wasn’t sexual, at least not entirely and not always, but it was more of a change of pace. He was so used to being so alone throughout his childhood, sleeping in a cold bed by himself, and it wasn’t until their third or fourth year when him and his fellow marauders decided sharing a bed together would make for a more comfortable time. It was then when Sirius discovered that he didn’t have to be alone anymore, not even for moments most people spend alone. It was a breath of fresh air.
Sirius laughed at James’ ‘roughing it’ comment, saying, “oh, shut up, you absolute twat.” He nudged a shoulder into him, before raising his head from the other’s neck and resting it on the pillow to look at the other’s face. “You wouldn’t know ‘roughing it’ if it hit you in the bloody face.” It was true –– James Potter was among the most privileged wizarding youth, and Sirius couldn’t think of anyone who had more money and a nicer house than he, (except perhaps Malfoy, if you considered a gloomy manor ‘nice’, which Sirius didn’t.)
This was unlike Sirius, who grew up in a horribly small home, that hardly had enough room for both him and his brother. The home was rather nice for what it was, but Sirius couldn’t be bothered to stay in it many nights. Oftentimes, after fights with his mother, he would leave the home for the night and end up sleeping somewhere on the streets of London, or in a park somewhere. This was where his animagus form came in handy during the summers, at least, until animal control would find him, which had happened maybe once or twice. Sirius had slept without food and without a bed rather often, and it something James would never know the feeling of. But Sirius thought it best not to mention his personal history of ‘roughing it’.
Instead, he would look at James, his eyes shutting every now and then as he felt slumber’s grasp reaching out to him. He eventually shot his eyes open again to hear his dear friend speak once more. With a chuckle, he closed his eyes again, confirming that, “Prongs, we are up to no good. Almost constantly.” Smile on his lips, he rolled onto his back, turning his head and opening his eyes to look towards James once more. “Well, I’m glad you’ll make this a permanent visit. I look forward to a summer of cuddling with James Potter. The birds at school would kill to be in my position.”
