❝In my dream, there's a baby in the middle of a circle, and there's, uh, someone on the other side. And I can't get to her before...❞ — Spencer Reid
Day 34
“It must have been love but it’s over now.”
You sang softly to comfort yourself in the dark basement. It was one of those songs that stuck with you. You pulled your knees up as you sat on the old mattress. The old hospital gown crinkled with the movement.
Alice’s hungry wails interrupted your coping mechanism. The unsub carried her down the stairs, flicking the lights on which made you shut your eyes since you’d been seeing in the dark too long. She shoved your daughter into your arms.
“Feed her quickly,” she snapped.
You opened your eyes once the coast was clear.
The unsub always turned off the lights so you wouldn’t get a chance to see your daughter properly by the time your eyes would adjust.
“Hi, Alice,” you whispered softly, bringing the baby closer to your chest. She was wrapped in a thin blanket. You managed to tug your hospital gown down. Her wails ceased as she began to feed.
Your hand stroked the back of her small head gently. Alice cooed in the middle of feeding. You smiled weakly at her way of greeting you.
“Mama loves you, dada loves—” The saying from your childhood was hard to unlearn. You learned it from your parents who were no longer around. “The team is still looking for us. I know they are. Especially my best friends, Reid and Garcia. They’re your godparents.”
You must have had dissociative amnesia. You remembered important facts like your name, your job as a profiler and the team. Your entire pregnancy and how it came to be? No memories. You didn’t even remember how the unsub kidnapped you.
You had a feeling when you conceived your baby it wasn’t because of something horrible. Though you did have a theory about why your mind blocked memories of the father. You didn’t like to think about that theory a lot.
Alice was your daughter. Yes, you’d been scared at first but your heart swelled with so much love every time she was with you. Her name stayed in your memory because you always wanted to give your future daughter that name.
Funnily enough the only person you entertained the idea of ever losing your virginity to was Spencer but that was impossible. You two were best friends who would never cross that forbidden line. You cared for him too much to ever risk ruining the friendship and losing him forever.
Would you ever see him again?
You asked yourself that question every single day.
If only you weren’t a tired new mom in a locked basement. One time the unsub got angry at you for feeding Alice too long. She took Alice away that time then came back with a gun and shot at the wall next to your head as a warning.
You had no doubt in your mind that she would eventually dispose of you once Alice didn’t need to feed from you anymore.
“I think you’ll really like Garcia and Reid,” you told Alice. “I know Reid loves babies. If I can’t be saved I hope he saves you. He’ll take good care of you. Out of all the people in the world I think he’s the one who deserves a baby the most.”
Was Spencer losing sleep like you were? Most likely. That gave you a sense of guilt. You didn’t want to ever be the reason for him losing so much sleep. He needed to get good nights of sleep.
Alice finished feeding with happy noises signaling she was full and content. You kissed her forehead. Time was running out.
You fixed your hospital gown. The first day in the basement the unsub claimed you gave birth to her daughter and that you didn’t need to stay in the hospital. She declared you a thief and her prisoner. The gown was a reminder.
In the past, you walked around the basement and noticed how large it was. Walking was an activity you did to give you some energy even though escape was futile. There was a bathroom you used when you found it. The unsub thought being able to use the bathroom in the dark was mercy. All of this meant the unsub lived well off and had a bigger house than normal.
The unsub returned, flicking the lights back on. Your eyes closed again in discomfort. She threw down a tray of the usual unappetizing food with drink by your feet before taking the baby away from you. You wanted to take her back but she always threatened to hurt Alice if you tried. Your daughter resumed crying and hot tears slid down your cheeks.
The unidentified subject was a woman suffering from a delusion. You never learned her name. Interesting that she thought you not knowing her name would mean she would escape consequences.
“Don’t cry, I’m your mother,” she scolded her harshly.
“Alice is my daughter,” you said in a placating voice. Emily used to tease you by saying that you were so sensitive and sweet it was slightly jarring to see you becoming oddly calm in front of unsubs when interrogating them. You didn’t tell her it was because Spencer taught you how. “You are suffering from a delusion. If you let me and Alice go I promise I will get you the help you need. Then maybe she’ll stop crying.”
The darkness came back by the time you reopened your eyes. She was exiting the basement angrily like the witch leaving Rapunzel’s tower.
“No! She’s my daughter. You stole my baby and put her in your womb. I did nothing wrong! Nothing!”
You pitied and despised her at the same time.
The basement’s silence brought back cold and despair. It was time to keep acting like you weren’t losing your mind from the agony of being separated from your daughter.
“It must have been good but I lost it somehow.”
In Rapunzel’s story, the prince blindly searched for her and found her with their children.
You remembered the first day you walked into the BAU and saw Spencer Reid. The first thought in your head was that his eyes looked so kind and that he resembled a fairy tale prince come to life.
Spencer wasn’t your prince but you wanted him to find you.
—
There was a thin line between dreams and reality.
Your head was bowed. Someone was gently placing Alice back into your arms. She gurgled happily, wriggling around in her blanket. The artificial light overwhelmed your eyelids so they stayed closed. You held her close, thinking this must have been a dream.
An equally gentle hand cupped the side of your face. You leaned into it, recognizing that hand. It was the same hand that held yours when he taught you how to dance.
“Angel,” he said softly.
Now this was definitely a dream. Spencer Reid would never call you “angel” and he wouldn’t be touching your face. The voice sounded a lot like his yet almost on the verge of tears.
Your lips formed a fragile smile. You wanted to pretend this was reality so you said the words you wanted to say in the real world. “You found me. I knew you would find me…” You leaned into his hand fully, falling into another dream. “Reid.”
You thought you heard the dream version of Spencer break down in tears.
—
“Reid, please help me.” Your voice broke as you kept slipping in and out of consciousness in the hospital bed. “My baby, where’s my baby…” A blurry Spencer gently laid a blurry Alice on your heart. You cradled her, resting your head lightly above her’s and bursting into tears. “Please don’t let her take my baby again. Please. I love my baby.” Your baby pressed her tiny fingers against you like she was trying to reassure you.
Spencer instantly laid down on his side beside you, beginning to brush your hair with his large hand. “Alice is safe,” he whispered over and over again. “No one will ever take her again.” Your eyes fluttered shut, his voice melting your fear.
“Alice is safe…”
Alice gurgled.
You faded back into the realm of unconsciousness.
—
I’m not in the basement.
You waited until your vision adjusted to the bright hospital room light.
Your gaze frantically noticed the new hospital gown and blanket over you. You felt freshly clean even your hair was washed. Maybe a nurse cleaned you up while you were asleep.
You looked to your right. The hospital bassinet by the bed had Alice sleeping peacefully inside. Pure relief flooded your body. She was free and you were free. She looked so adorable with her sleepy smile and tiny fists. A pink hat covered her head. She wore a matching onesie with a blanket on top of her. You were actually seeing her.
You reached over, counting all her fingers and toes. You pressed a kiss against her angelic cheek. She was safe. She was safe. She was safe.
Oh if only you could pick her up but you wanted to let her sleep. The window in the room showed the night sky.
The fact you were alive and out of the basement meant that Spencer coming to save you was partly real. You dreamed up certain parts of what happened due to sleep deprivation.
Of course, you could depend on Spencer Reid. Your best friend—
You looked to your left, finding a stranger in the chair nearby with his head down. You gasped softly, sitting up and clutching the blanket with one hand like that was the best thing in the world to protect you from an intruder.
The stranger lifted his head to reveal your best friend’s face.
Reid?
It was him and not him. The stranger sitting in the chair had Spencer’s dark thoughtful eyes and contemplative mouth. But when did he decide to have fluffy insanely pretty fallen angel hair? Was this how Psyche felt when she saw Eros for the first time?
Spencer was always beautiful but clearly hormones was making you stare at him too long.
How could you not stare at him? Did he steal Hotch’s suits?
He watched you with a quiet intensity and something else you couldn’t decipher. You noticed the shadows under his eyes were more prominent than usual. Then he reached forward, lacing your free fingers together with his. You tilted your head in confusion.
“It’s me, Spencer,” he spoke softly like your dream.
There was vivid emotion in his eyes like he was begging you to remember him.
The second you heard his voice you teared up. “Reid.” He closed his eyes briefly. You released the blanket and unlaced your fingers from his to hug him tightly, burying your face against his shoulder.
Spencer hugged you back tightly like he did on his thirtieth birthday. That was the time he hugged you after you showed up to his apartment and almost dropped the box of homemade chocolate cake. He caught the box, laughing boyishly before setting it down on the entryway table and hugging you like you were his favorite person.
All you could do was cry like a wife who hadn’t seen her husband in years. You felt bad for letting your tears fall on him but he didn’t seem to mind at all.
“I’m here, I’m here,” Spencer whispered. He held you like you were his lifeline as much as he was yours. The words sank into your skin with every rub of his hand against your back and every brush that lingered on your hair.
“This isn’t a dream?” You sniffled, lifting your head. He wiped the tears off your cheeks with his thumb gently.
“It’s not a dream,” he promised with those eyes filled with fatigue and kindness.
You examined his entire face with your eyes thoughtfully. As if you fell into a sort of trance. Your mind refused to communicate to your fingers that they weren’t supposed to be lightly tracing the side of his jaw and feeling his faint stubble with intent curiosity.
“Reid, what happened to you?” You asked softly.
You couldn’t understand how your best friend looked so different. You regretted asking such a silly question out loud. Your sleep deprived self was not holding questions in like a normal person.
Spencer shut his eyes, letting loose a shaky exhale.
“I’m so sorry,” you apologized, dropping your fingers. He opened his eyes, the quiet intensity returned. Your heart skipped a beat. “I shouldn’t touch you like that without permission.”
“I don’t mind.” Spencer brought your hand back to the side of his jaw. “You can touch me as much as you want. It helps you feel better doesn’t it?“
He was so sweet for letting you touch him to help make yourself feel better even if it was inappropriate.
“It does. It helps remind me that you’re real and that I’m not in the basement anymore.” You took your hand away with a flustered expression. His eyes shone with sympathy. “Thank you but I really shouldn’t. It’s still inappropriate. The team would freak out if they saw us. Garcia would be printing out wedding invitations.”
“The team already saw you and the baby. They wanted to let you recuperate,” he said.
“Do they like the baby? Do you like the baby? I mean of course you like the baby. You love babies. But isn’t she adorable?” You rushed out the words.
“We all love Alice,” Spencer replied kindly. “She’s very adorable.”
His compliments always sounded genuine.
“You’re not mad at me that I have a baby now?”
“Why would I be mad?”
“I told you I wanted to get married first and then have a baby. Well, I’m not married and I don’t remember how I got the baby. Don’t I seem irresponsible?”
Spencer furrowed his brows, concern written all over his face. “You’re not irresponsible. It looks like you have dissociative amnesia because of the trauma and stress you’ve been through. Eventually those memories will return…” He cleared his throat. “Babies come from—”
“I remember where babies come from. Thanks for confirming my amnesia theory.” Your face got hot. “I just can’t wrap my head around it that someone did that with me. But I have a theory why I don’t remember who Alice’s father is.”
“What’s your theory?” There was overwhelming patience in his voice. It reminded you of the times he let you speak when you attempted to profile unsubs with him.
“I think before I was kidnapped I must have went through a lot of emotional pain.” You folded your hands on your lap. “Getting kidnapped was the final straw for my mind. Alice’s father wasn’t there when I gave birth right?”
There was a moment of silence.
“Yes, he wasn’t there,” he replied with remorse.
Your heart’s familiar ache came.
“Did I love him?”
Another moment of silence.
Spencer went back to rubbing your back. His voice softened considerably. “You loved him very much.”
I did?
“So he must be a bad person then since he wasn’t there for Alice’s birth.” Your voice saddened. “He broke my heart and left me all alone and pregnant?”
Spencer paused, lowering his gaze. “Yes.”
He looked so guilty but it wasn’t his fault.
It sounded so unlike you to even try to date and have a baby with a man to get over Spencer. You remembered being that awkward bookworm who couldn’t admit to your best friends that you didn’t have your first kiss yet. But Spencer confirmed your theory was true so that meant anything was possible like waking up in a basement with a deranged woman for example.
How crazy was all of this? Spencer told you so many crazy stories about what happened to him and other members of the team. You never imagined your crazy story would involve a baby and a broken heart.
“That makes sense. My heart hurts so much when I try to think about him.”
Spencer bit his bottom lip hard.
You hugged Spencer again, he hugged you back gently and you were glad he was your best friend. “I know I’ll eventually remember. But right now I want to focus on Alice.” You found hope in the midst of the trauma you suffered. You didn’t want to think about your baby’s mysterious father anymore. It wasn’t like he was here. “You never abandoned me. You’re still my best friend and the best godfather ever.”
“What?” He sounded breathless.
“Oh sorry did I forget to ask you?”
How could you forget to ask him to be Alice’s godfather?
Spencer glanced to the side in a way that meant the gears in his mind were turning.
Alice started to cry and he quickly allowed you to move to the bassinet.
You lifted your baby out of the bassinet gently. “Hi, Alice. Mama’s here.” She sniffled, keeping her eyes closed as you rocked her back and forth. Spencer stared at the both of you with worry and gripped his knee tightly.
Alice’s tiny fists raised in the air, escaping the confines of her blanket. Spencer seemed terrified of coming closer like he didn’t want to interrupt your moment with your daughter.
“It’s okay,” you said in a reassuring tone, scooting on the bed to make room for him. “You’re not interrupting.”
Spencer sat next to you and Alice with an anxious posture. He observed her face and you observed him as he hesitantly brought his index finger to Alice’s fist. Her crying stopped. She wrapped her fist around his finger. The sight was absolutely adorable. His presence must have comforted her.
“Hi, Alice,” he said quietly. “It’s nice to meet you again.”
Alice cooed in response.
You smiled shyly, suppressing a laugh. “You’ve always been good with babies.”
Spencer locked eyes with you. It seemed like he fell under his own trance. He leaned in towards your face and you widened your eyes.
“Reid, what’s wrong?” You whispered.
His eyes widened like yours.
“Nothing’s wrong, an—” Spencer leaned his head back. “Everything is fine.”
Your baby’s hand continued clutching his finger. She dozed away in your arms as Spencer looked mesmerized.
You decided to change the subject to break the awkwardness. “Is it normal for newborns to keep their eyes closed when they’re awake?”
“Every baby is different. She’ll open up her eyes more the more she grows,” he said.
“That’s good I was worried for a second.” You laughed softly then cut it short because his face looked stricken. Maybe he didn’t think it was a good idea for you to laugh after recently escaping the house of horrors. “I think she likes you by the way.”
“It’s a grasp reflex,” he explained, watching Alice with a gentle gaze. “It’s involuntary. She developed it when she was inside of you.”
“That’s really fascinating.” You meant it. You could listen to him talking for hours. “I still think she likes you. It’s impossible not to.”
“You think so?” Spencer sounded so unsure.
“I do.” You saw his soft gaze slide back to yours. “You’re a good person. You saved me and my baby. Thank you.”
He swallowed thickly.
“I would have never stopped until I found the both of you.”
“I know.” Your smile remained. “That’s why you’re my best friend.”
“Right.” The corner of Spencer’s mouth twisted. “Friend.”
You held back a yawn. The adrenaline was wearing off your body. “Thank you for staying if you want to go home that’s okay.”
Deep down you didn’t want him to leave.
“I’m staying,” he murmured.
Whoever he would marry in the future was the luckiest girl in the world.
“Let me guess though…” You trailed off, sleep trying to embrace you. “You’re staying because you like seeing Alice’s face.”
“You’re right. You profiled my true intentions.”
You suppressed another laugh, examining his face once more. “The more I look at you I realize you look older.”
You should have been freaked out but he was still Spencer.
“Thanks.” A barely there smile appeared on his face.
“Not in a bad way.” You stared at his hair in awe. “I mean you’re still pretty. Remember Eros and Psyche? You look like Eros. Your hair is so fluffy.” His face flushed a bit. “I’m sorry did I say that out loud?”
“You’re being you.” Spencer stayed close. “You’re processing things.”
“Does this mean I’m missing more time than I thought? How much time?” You realized this wasn’t a good time to ask so you shook your head. “Do you promise to answer my questions tomorrow?” Sleepiness seeped into your voice as Alice dozed on. “I promise I won’t freak out.”
Nothing would be as terrifying as the basement. If you truly missed so much time you had to cope with the situation for the sake of your daughter.
Spencer met your sleepy gaze with an unreadable expression. “I promise.” The side of his forehead rested against yours in a gesture that touched and befuddled you.
His presence comforted you too.
If anyone walked past the room and peeked inside they would have mistaken the three of you for a family.
You are also either earning an amount or you are not earning that amount. 'Earn up to 21.50/hr' no. Either you're paying 21.50 or you are not paying 21.50. Tell the truth or jail for employer for 1000 years.
there's something to be said about movies like kpop demon hunters, turning red, encanto, over the moon, and sinners, which combine music and cultural specificity into engaging storytelling. you don't need to just take "inspiration" from a culture. you can tell a specific story about it that everyone will be able to relate to even if they are unfamiliar with the specifics, because there are human elements we can all relate to in well-told stories.
kpop demon hunters has such 90s saturday morning cartoon energy in the best possible way
i want 20 seasons of the huntrix girls kicking ass, singing insanely catchy songs, and kicking demon ass while gwi-ma and the saja boys go to increasingly ludicrous lengths to try to out-idol them and the tiger and bird cause low-stakes mayhem all over seoul
anyways i just love the way kpop demon hunters stayed true to its roots in korean/asian culture, especially around the core theme of community vs individualism
the fact that it's not a single chosen one but a group of three
the fact that the honmoon is not powered by the hunters themselves but by the energy and love of the fans
the fact that gwi-ma turns people into demons by promising that he is the only one who can help them when he is in fact reliant on his army of demons to collect souls for him
the fact that "your idol" is about surrendering yourself to a single higher power while "golden" is about soaring to new heights together
the fact that gwi-ma preys on people's individual insecurities and shame to get inside their heads while rumi, mira, and zoey set them free in the end by encouraging them to embrace their differences and reminding them that they're not alone
the fact that you can see the audience cheering individually and even pushing into each other to get closer to the stage during "your idol"
while they're linking arms and cheering together and hugging during "what it feels like"
i have not seen the live action lilo and stitch but it feels like that movie sits on the opposite end of the spectrum from kpop demon hunters as a case study for how to tell a story in way that is culturally authentic and still resonates with a broader audience
and i think given that the core theme of the movie is all about community over individualism, the ending, particularly as it relates to rumi and jinu's budding romance, is really the perfect culmination of that broader theme
rumi and jinu's connection has all the hallmarks of that all-encompassing, all-consuming, borderline co-dependent first love where you keep your relationship a secret and sneak out of the house to meet up and feel like the other person is the ONLY person who really gets you
i'm the only one who can understand you, i'm the only one who will love you is the kind of thing that sounds romantic when you're 16 until you get older and realize how toxic it actually is and i love that the movie counters that in "what it feels like" with rumi realizing that she had that love and support all along from her girls, and later, from the fans who continue to cheer them on through their comeback
it's about connection and sisterhood and love and sharing your fears and lifting each other up and becoming stronger and better together
and as compelling as i found rumi/jinu and as much as i would like to see their relationship explored more in a sequel/series, i just really love that this movie, which is clearly targeted at young women, ends on the message that romantic love is not the end all be all, that friendship is just as important if not more so than a romantic partner, that single women can lead successful, fulfilling lives, that true happiness and freedom start from within
it's crazy that this message still seems revolutionary in 2025 but given the current state of the world, it feels more necessary than ever
