Around the turn of the century, a beast resembling a huge dog with large paws and an ugly red mouth was known to exist on South Mountain, east of Hagerstown, Maryland [at Turner's Gap, the site of the 1862 battle, near where "the Midnight Battle" was supposed to have happened. - Jonah]. Hundreds of people saw the dog, and horses particularly were afraid of the strange animal. The dog suddenly would appear on the National Pike, now Alternate Route 40, blocking the road. Without inflicting any damage with its vicious-looking teeth, it would confront travellers, then disappear before astonished men and women. The Black Dog, or Snarly Yow, as the locals called it, seemed to have been relegated to old accounts and memoirs... until the beast was again seen by credible witnesses in the summer of 1975.
Timothy and Joshua Cutchin discuss a very strange article from Timothy’s latest book, Bigfoot: West Coast Wild Men. Joshua has made many observations in the past linking different modern paranormal phenomena with folkloric accounts of Celtic faerie encounters. This particular article, dating from 1857, contains a vast amount of elements which seem to link this bigfoot Read More

This sculpture of the Moddey Dhoo (Mauthe Doog)resides where the supposed Hellhound itself does - Peel Castle on the Isle of Man. The Moddey Dhoo is said to resemble a black, curly furred spaniel and has been seen since the 1700s.
Legend says that the black dog would walk down a dark corridor and curl up by a fire that was lit by soldiers that lived at the castle. The soldiers were wary of the dog, as they knew he did not belong at the castle, but after a while of seeing him, they were less afraid. They would have to walk down the same dark passage to take the castle’s keys to the Captain, and would never do so alone out of fear of the dog. Until one night, when a drunken soldier boasted that he was not afraid of the Moddey Dhoo. His friends tried to hold him back, but he went into the corridor and a moment later, the black dog left the fireside and followed him. There were no sounds for a few minutes, but then there were sudden screams and howls coming from the dark passage. The soldier ran back to the others, deathly pale and scared. Three days later, he died, and no one knows what happened in that corridor.

The Black Dogs of England are said to be violent predictors of death and doom, but that is not always the case. The Gurt Dog (“Great Dog”) is said to wander around Quantock Hills in Somerset, England, and it is different compared to its fellows. The Gurt Dog is said to be a kind and gentle protector of those that wander the moors. It is specifically a protector to small children and legend says that the Gurt Dog watches over children that play alone and will even help guide lonely travelers.
