I am sick and tired of bots on Ao3 (rant).

Fair warning that I am not normally a ranty person online, but I’m posting this here because I think it is worth talking about. Today I received a comment on my fic “100 Ways to Say I Love You” accusing me of being pro-ICE and anti-immigration. This is completely untrue, not just because it goes against my personal morals and beliefs (I am pro-immigration and staunchly against ICE, I think they and anyone who supports them are far beyond despicable) but because there is absolutely no mention of any of the things the commenter accused me of within the fic. The words “border,” “immigration,” “illegals,” or anything of that nature never appear in the entire 80k+ words, and none of the details they accuse me of having exist in any capacity, which is why I am positive this is a bot comment. I have already marked the comment as spam and deleted it, but I wanted to post this because a) I want people to know about this issue and the fact that it is still happening and b) this kind of thing does more harm than you would think. These are important issues, and bots weaponizing them for ragebait or engagement or ai scraping makes a mockery of them. It also needlessly drags random creators for no reason (the name on the guest bot account is a real ao3 username, which is just pulling a second random real creative into this) and may end up confusing or making readers uncomfortable. That is not the kind of space I want my fics to be, and I’m sure most authors would agree with me. It is disgusting that the people behind these bot comments would stoop to using such important issues as engagement bait. I don’t want to have to turn off guest comments, because I have had lovely guest commenters in the past, but unfortunately it seems like I’m not going to have a choice if this continues. It’s just very annoying and disappointing. I’ve attached a screenshot of the comment so you can see and so maybe people can know to avoid this kind of bait in case the same script is used for other comments.

God, Final Destination Bloodlines was so good XDD and as someone with horrific peanut allergies i can wholeheartedly relate to just wanting to try a peanut butter cup. its like the forbidden fruit for anaphylactics. This pic was also a spoof on ‘Ivan the terrible and his son’
