completely forgot to post sorry!!! anyway i have been doing some ant hunting at places ive been and so far i have found Pharaoh ants (image 1), black headed sugar ants (image 2), and even more green head ants (image 3)!!!! i love that there are ants everywhere!
Ive been doing some research on leafcutter ants and they are definitely some of my favourite types of ants!! (ive got a whole book about them!!!!) heres a photo of Daceton armigerum, my personal favourite!
you can see that its jaws are elongated and have little spikes on the end to cut leaves!! they are so cute, I hope to get a macro lens for my camera so i can take ant photos to post :)
My favourite part of going on walks is seeing all the different kinds of ants that live everywhere, its so funny to think that there are huge societies underneath my feet..
saw some fire ants today!! they arent one of my favourites but they certainly are very cute and pretty, but i accidentally got stung while trying to feed them an apple slice, whoops.. it is disappointing though, as they are invasive where i live :(
also i got a photo of the green-head ants i found the other day on an apple core!!!! my camera isnt the best quality, but you can faintly see the green on its head and the metallic on its abdomen, so pretty!!!!!!
Today i found some Green-Head ants, they are super pretty! fed em some of my spaghetti bolognaise, though i always forget thay they have very painful stings.. Sadly didnt get a photo, so enjoy this one off the internet!!
they normally look black but if you put them in the sunlight they are beautiful, definitely one of my favourite ants; i really hope to have my own colony one day.
I really like ants… have some facts!
there are currently 15,000 ants species, though there is probably much more yet to be discovered!!
honeypot ants use their abdomens to store honeydew, and can be eaten! (image 1)
leafcutter ants pile leaves in order to grow fungus to eat! (image 2)
ants place their brood in different places based on which stage of metamorphosis they are in, and even place the brood depending on what level of moisture they need!!
some ant species use the silk from the larvae to stick leaves together to make a nest (image 3)
