The new regulations could save thousands of lives from deadly air pollution, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's calcula
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed a significant shift in air quality standards by reducing the allowable level of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) from 12 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³) to 9 µg/m³. This move is a major step, in the many steps needed, towards enhancing public health, protecting the environment, and stimulating economic benefits. Hereās a condensed look at why this change matters:
Health Benefits
Reducing PM2.5 levels means fewer health issues like respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, benefiting everyone, especially vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly. It's a direct path to healthier communities with fewer premature deaths. Itās important to remember that 6.7 million people die prematurely due to air pollution!
Environmental Impact
Lower PM2.5 levels will also improve environmental quality by reducing haze and protecting ecosystems. This contributes to preserving the natural beauty and biodiversity of our planet.
Economic Advantages
A stricter PM2.5 standard encourages innovation in cleaner technologies, which can lead to job creation in the green sector and reduce healthcare costs due to improved public health. It also enhances quality of life, making communities more attractive for living and working.
Global Leadership
By adopting more stringent air quality standards, the U.S. demonstrates global leadership in environmental protection, inspiring other nations to follow suit and contribute to worldwide efforts against air pollution.
The Road Ahead
Achieving the new PM2.5 standard requires a collective effort from all levels of government, industries, and communities. It entails a commitment to cleaner energy, improved emissions standards, and public awareness about air quality. Itās important to remember this is just one step forward and many more are required to fully reduce the impact of air pollution. Worth noting, the EPA has NO regulation authority over indoor air quality, which itself is responsible for 2.3 million deaths globally of those 6.7 million deaths attributed to air pollution.
Highlight of last term: leading a journal club discussion! While not the most aesthetically pleasing picture, it was an incredibly engaging discussion. Loved exchanging ideas and insights. Can't wait for more!

Day 6: Appreciate
I got up at 5, had some pre workout, and got started on work. I managed to finish two toxicology lectures and edit my resume + CV before I went out to my routine cancer check up. While I didnāt receive the best news, I did allow myself to enjoy the little things today like the paintings my partnerās aunt gave to us when we moved. Appreciating the little things is something that gets me through the bigger hard things.
Day 5: Discipline
I didnāt take a picture today, but mainly ran errands. Something Iāve been left pondering is the idea of how your attitude can be viewed as a skill.
