cassian.

He feels the atmosphere around them shift. This time when their eyes meet, there’s crackling of energies. The jacket he just picked up feels heavier in his hand– oh. Could this … be recognition? His chest tightens as a burning sensation expands from the center. Cassian can’t recall the last time someone recognized his name. “ Wait– “ he says, but then he’s right back to hesitating. “ Actually, let’s keep going first before we get caught again. “ Cassian moves towards the front of the ship ( that they might have stolen ). He sits in one of the two piloting seats, reaching for the headset. “ You fly, right? “ He cracks a small grin. “ You seem like the flying type. “

They’re able to take off without any more catastrophes. It seems like they’re being given a break for once. Once they’ve locked the ship in a steady cruise, Cassian expels a heavy breath. He pulls off the headset, and leans back in the chair while rubbing his eyes. Both mental and physical exhaustion has begun to kick in. After lowering his hand from his face, Cassian sits up straight, and turns to face the other male.

“ Give me five minutes of you suspending your disbelief. Sound good? “ Cassian clears his throat. “ I’m Captain Cassian Andor of the Alliance to Restore the Republic. Fighting in The Rebellion against the Galactic Empire. My last mission wasn’t assigned. It was something we all volunteered for. We called ourselves Rogue One. Went to Scarif to steal and send of the Death Star plans. I died that day. “ A pause. “ –then somehow I woke up. In another place – time – dimension. And it’s been that way ever since. Each time I die, I end up somewhere else. Unless I– “ He falters for a moment before saying, “ –I decide to take matters into my own hands. Apparently, suicide just has me waking up in the same place and time. There’s no end to it. “ Shrugs a shoulder. “ I just call them Loops. Figured I’d keep it simple for something that’s already damned confusing. And– sometimes misleading. Thinking I can go back and save people from … “

His gaze gets a faroff look for a few moments as if his mind if replaying flickering memories. He steels himself as he focuses on Poe again. “ Sounds crazy, I know. I feel that way most of the time. Only thing that’s been anchoring me is the chance of finding my way back home– “ ( and my partner, Kaytoo ). Cassian clenches his left hand, feeling for the ring. He swallows down whatever grief that threatens to surface. 

After a deep breath, he says, “ You … feel familiar. I don’t know how, but … have we met before? “

       poe’s steadied, as ever, by the solid familiarity of a ship beneath and around him, bones set to a pleasant, dizzy hum by the engines’ thrumming under him -- there’s no masking or hiding that he very nearly feels more at home here than he does on the ground, almost, and he has half a mind to lapse some idle wisecrack about how cassian’s assertion that he seems like a flying type might just be the slightest bit of an understatement.

       but cassian moves to speak ahead of him, and the thread of stability slips and shifts ; poe listens with the bloody muscle of his heart thumping an unsteady adamance against his sternum -- and it’s a tightly restrained impulse needed to keep him from reaching out to grip at cassian’s hand or arm. maybe in affirmation, maybe in comfort -- poe isn’t certain. ( yeah, it sounds crazy. enough to leave poe feeling off his balance and a little cut adrift form his skin. but what else is there? what cause would cassian have to lie about something as painful as that, even if there were any tells of such, which there aren’t? )

                    ‘ -- i think i’d remember, ’ poe manages, finally, yet as soon as he says it, he’s not even certain what it means. looked at a certain way, it could sound like the line that it isn’t. ‘ rare kid from yavin that didn’t grow up on stories about cassian andor and rogue one. ’ the corner of poe’s mouth hitches faintly upward, unusually cautious, and he wonders if it’s this lightheaded, absented distance ticking over in his skull that’s allowed him to be as calm as he is about this. he might have expected more startling, or -- something. ‘ you would’ve ... known my parents. shara bey and kes dameron -- dad’s, uh. dad’s still around. my welito -- my grandfather, too. figure they might not look how you recall, though. ’

       for a moment ( just one, or maybe two if he’s feeling generous ) poe simply lets cayde’s abrupt urgency shift up to meet him, warming in the pit of his core, coaxing out a low shimmer of a hum at the base of his throat -- cayde’s heat feels like a biting, and it earns a sharp grin ( confident, capable, not cruel ) when he pulls away just enough to speak, digits closing firm ( not harsh ) around cayde’s wrists such that the only points of contact are the sparks between kisses.

                  ‘ i thought i said let yourself. ’

       if cayde wants more than that, he can work for it -- or ask.

                           poe’s not feeling too picky. ( least of all when he feels, more than hears, the rungs of cayde’s spine manoeuvred to gently thud up against a wall, bodies still barely touching, and -- )

                                         -- sometimes he forgets how much he likes doing this. ( likes being allowed to do this -- and it is an allowance, poe knows. a gift, the trust bared under his mandibles, the gleam of open, trusting want in cayde’s optics shivering a spilling of want into his stomach, at the apex of his thighs, shit, he shouldn’t be this affected already, he almost thinks, but then again, why not? )

                 ‘ any other questions? ’ it is a request for permission, for the go-ahead, too, if not in as many words.

cayde.

cayde nods, optics dropping back to the steady thrum of cards falling through his fingers in a crisp pattern. he could put a blackjack dealer to shame. always, though, at the top of the deck the queen of hearts. his gloved thumb brushes against the faded, dirty, stained card edged in paper-thin metal with casual reverence before he tucks the deck away somewhere up his sleeve. with a splash, he lands in the glowing helium pool, the edge of his stitched cloak stained a darker shade of black.   “ appreciate it pal, ”   he answers poe with an easy wink.

his ace of spades is in his hand, carefully resting against his shoulder as he makes his way to the vex conflux the ghosts are still deciphering. cyan optics flit over the sharp and glowing white surface, curiosity burgeoning. he’d always wondered what made the vex, what fueled them outside of the drive to conquer and worship that was oh so similar to the hive. why was that?

cayde’s optics snap to his ghost, whose bright white shell had turned to face him, blue eye blinking up at its guardian. 

“ alright harry. in that case, we’re gonna go for a stroll around the neighborhood. ”

<< you mean, you’re going to find one of your cache’s to make sure it hasn’t been raided by guardians or some big captain, >>  harry replies, already flitting back to join poe’s ghost. 

“ yeah yeah. you know what to do if you need us, ”   cayde answers, already making his way towards the cave entrance, no more than a slit in the cliff face, easily covered by thick hanging vines. he turns to poe once they’ve secured it, winks again.   “ let’s go get those bones. ”

       it’s not until they’re out of the cave that poe decides to speak -- gregarious by nature, but he decides it’s some good fortune to not feel bothered, here, if he isn’t. that he’s happy to listen to cayde talk, and watch him move, and meet him at the midpoint in his own time --

       -- he supposes it comes back to the fact that cayde wants but doesn’t need him, something private and unfamiliar that could scare poe, if he let it. ( sometimes it does. )

       still, it’s cayde’s latter words that earn a rattle of mirth up from somewhere in the wired column of poe’s neck, and it’s probably a childish sliver of humour, but he finds himself well past the point of being too worried about it.

                     ‘ now, if i’d known that’s what you’d wanted, we could have done that without getting up at the crack of dawn. ’

       but cayde knows, just as well as he does, that poe’s never truly been one for sitting still while life moves around him.

       even if that particular prospect would’ve been, admittedly, more than momentarily tempting.

                  ‘ you gonna lead the way, or am i guessing -- ? ’
