asena  was  flipping  through  a  stack  of  fashion  magazines  near  the  register,  her  nails  tapping  absently  against  it’s  glossy  pages  as  she  squinted  at  a  photo  of  a  model  in  a  feathered  mini  dress.  “there’s  bold,  and  then  there’s  …  whatever  this  is,”  she  muttered  to  herself,  holding  the  magazine  out  at  arm’s  length,  like  the  distance  would  somehow  make  it  better.  she  had  a  dinner  with  her  parents  this  weekend,  her  mother’s  idea  of  a  fresh  start,  and  nothing  to  wear  that  didn’t  make  her  look  either  overdressed  or  emotionally  unwell.  sighing  she  flipped  to  another  page  before  glancing  toward  the  person  next  to  her.  “okay,  be  honest,”  she  said,  holding  up  the  page,  “could  i  pull  this  off,  or  would  i  just  look  like  i  got  dressed  in  the  dark?”

winona hums, tilting her head to the side as she looks at the page. she looks at asena, looking her up and down, and then looks back at the page. "ummm," she starts, and then shrugs. "honestly... it's not the best looking outfit... i think you'd look better in something else," she tells her, and then reaches up to tug at a strand of hair. "but you shouldn't be asking me, i'm terrible at fashion." she gestures down at her jeans, black shirt, and hoodie.

open starter where: common ground when: 10am, a day with no phones

it really shouldn't be so hard for her to stay off her phone for a day, it's not like she was constantly glued to it. one time she lost her phone for four hours and didn't even realize it until she found it sitting inside her fridge when she went to grab a snack. but the fact that she can't be on her phone made it so much worse. tell charlie she can't do something and it's all she will think about. sure, she could just cave and look at her notifications or scroll instagram for a couple seconds, but she also liked a challenge. fingers tapped against her coffee cup, looking around at the cafe and taking in everyone around her. when was the last time she actually stopped and took in the scenery? might as well use the time to make connections or foster old ones. sliding over to the person next to her, charlie let out a sigh. "please tell me you're struggling as much as i am, i mean, asking us to stay off our phones is like modern day torture."

without phones, she's using the time to do some research. she's got books all over the table, and she's using pen and paper to write things down. normally she's be using her laptop to take notes, but today? she's taking part of the challenge. it takes her a moment to realize that someone's talking to her, and then she's looking up. "oh, yeah," she agrees with charlie, and turns her focus on the other person. "i want to cave so bad, because my work is all online, but i can take one day off." she's determined. winona's then looking down at her bag that's beside her, housing her phone and her laptop. "maybe..."

she stared down at the piles of paper in front of her , the jumble of words all seemingly coming together in a nonsensical spiral of chicken scratch . it was one thing to be prepared for a case , but it was a completely different ball game just starting out . who the hell could remember all of this in one sitting ? nevermind the fact that her superiors wanted it presented in front of a judge later in the week — “ these people are fucking egregious , ” — she mutters to herself while sipping on her iced americano . or what was left of it . which was really just ice .

it's too early. she's blinking down at her coffee, and only comes out of her little daze when she hears a familiar voice. she realizes she's been standing there, probably looking like an idiot. she mentally shakes her head to get the cobwebs out and moves to slide into the chair in front of genevieve, hoping that a conversation would help wake her up. "big words for first thing in the morning," winona teases, and then takes a sip of her coffee. "work related?" she asks, raising an eyebrow.
