Taiga x MC and the timelines (analysis)

A continuation of my previous post with Taiga’s unexpected question and also a reply to @themostlovelyandlonelyboy because I have a lot to say and I had the same thought!

If Taiga remembers previous loops/timelines, that would explain why he often acts like he knows more than he's willing (or able) to say. What I find interesting is that Taiga constantly asks MC questions instead of telling her things.

He asks if she wants to live, asks what she thinks, asks what he should do, and even asks if she has a man. If he really does remember previous loops/ timelines, those questions almost feel like he's checking whether this timeline is different from the last one. Is she making different choices? Does she remember anything? Has the future changed? That would also explain all of his pauses ("…"). It's like he's weighing how much he can say without changing something or because he already knows what happens if he says too much.

At the same time, I don't think Taiga is completely hopeless. He's cynical, yes, but he keeps trying. If he'd truly given up, I don't think he'd bother protecting MC over and over again or asking for her input. The fact that he continues to involve her tells me that, despite everything he's seen, some part of him still believes this timeline could be different. That's actually why his affinity 25 line stands out to me: "You're not getting away from me, kitten. You're here till death do us part."

If he has watched MC die countless times, that line becomes heartbreaking. It stops sounding like simple possessiveness and starts sounding like someone who's desperately clinging to the one person he keeps losing.

It would also make his earlier "It doesn't matter, everything's screwed anyway" make more sense. Maybe that's not him saying love is pointless, maybe it's someone who's seen tragedy happen so many times that he doesn't want to let himself hope. Yet despite saying that, he still grows attached to MC.

I also agree that the loop or timeline we play probably isn't the first one. There are too many moments where Taiga reacts as if he's expecting something before it happens, or already knows how certain events play out. Whether that's because of his foresight alone or because he remembers previous timelines is still a mystery, but both possibilities fit his behavior well. If the time-loop/different timelines is 100% confirmed, then MC is the one variable that finally changes the future.

It would fit Taiga's arc if, after countless failed timelines, this is the one where someone finally believes him and that's what breaks the cycle. If it turns out to be true... then his Affinity 25 line: "You're here till death do us part." becomes even more heartbreaking. It wouldn't just be a possessive line but it would be someone who's finally found a timeline where he refuses to let MC go.

Taiga is absolutely testing the timeline he's in! Since his head gets messed up and its probably confusing as hell it makes so much sense! If Romeo, the one he's closest to, doesn't believe him about his foresight, he probably figures its not worth it to risk telling MC in case Darkwick finds out, or it damahes the current timeline. So when he asks "do you wanna live?" Its like he's trying to ask every version of her.

Im sure there are countless timelines in which she would have given up and said "no"

I also love that Taiga respects her choices. He knows he can't neccesarily control the future even if he's seen it.

But the more MC answers with hope and wanting to fight and live. I feel like this gives Taiga mkre hope.

Elias was trying to tell us

"Believe in him"

When given the option to say "Yes" (yes Taiga you cab trust us to tell us your stigma) or "I don't need to know." (I trust/believe in you it doesn't matter how or why)

Either way he tells you his stigma.

He's not just asking "Do you want to know my stigma?" He's asking "Are you going to believe me?"

I like to believe that Taiga is having a similar experience to that of Joy in Everything, Everywhere, All At Once

Confusion and chaos

Which might help explain his attitude of "whatever screw it all" because he has seen so many bad endings already

I also think the time loop could explain why MC is so chill about it all and adapts so easily (all things considered)

Maybe the first few hundred timelines she hardly even interacted with the ghouls, or was wary of them like the general students. Or maybe she wasn't confident in her curse being broken. But all these fated strings will forever be tangled. Maybe this most recent time loop is different, MC is different. She says things she's never said before, and gotten angry, and expressed her frustrations, seen the injustice among the ghouls.

I think your analysis is so brilliant! And its such a cool fandom, the way they choose to tell the story and how each person analyzes it is always going to be so unique!

And its so awesome how many different directions they could go with the story!

I love your interpretation! It actually made me think of something.

If Taiga really remembers previous loops or even fragments of them, then MC isn’t just changing the future: She’s changing him too. Elias saying that Taiga is “just waiting for someone who truly believes in him” suddenly feels so much heavier.

Imagine living through countless timelines where no matter what you say, people either dismiss your foresight or think you’re crazy. Eventually, you’d probably stop explaining yourself altogether. That’s exactly what Taiga does. He rarely gives direct answers. Instead, he asks MC questions. “Do you want to live?”, “Do you have a man?” etc. It almost feels like he’s constantly testing whether this timeline is different from the last one, while also trying to understand this version of MC.

What really gets me is that Taiga isn’t trying to force the future to happen. If anything, he’s constantly asking for MC’s choices. He wants her answer. Maybe because after seeing so many futures, he knows that her choices are the one variable he can’t predict perfectly. I also think that’s why he eventually opens up about his stigma. It isn’t just him revealing a secret, it’s him taking a faith. He’s finally choosing to trust someone after possibly living through timeline after timeline where no one believed him.

I think Taiga’s route isn’t really going to be about learning to love. I think it’s going to be about learning to hope again. MC wouldn’t just become the person he loves, she’d become proof that the future isn’t as fixed as he thought. I especially like ending on that idea because it ties together almost everything we’ve seen from him. Taiga’s defining trait isn’t just his foresight, it’s his fatalism. He often acts like outcomes are already decided so if MC becomes the one person who repeatedly proves him wrong, then her role in his story isn’t only romantic. She’s the person who teaches him that the future can still be changed. That would make Elias’s line about someone finally believing in him even more meaningful, because belief wouldn’t just comfort Taiga, it would literally become the thing that lets him move beyond the future he’s been trapped in.

I love these type of discussions! I usually keep my analysis to myself but I think I should post a little more in the future? It feels great to be able to share my opinion and discuss with you ^^

Character I like other than the ghouls... Well, I like all the ghouls and honestly I quite like all the non-ghoul characters too. As for Professor Hyde... It's not like I hate him but I have a long list of complaints for him.

I've considered my options and I suppose the character I like other than the ghouls would be our Honor Student. Hmm, would this answer be too boring? But I really do like the Honor Student...

She has a very strong sense of responsibility and I really respect how optimistic she can be at carrying herself. She already has a lot on her plate with the whole curse thing yet she still has it in her to worry about other people and the ghouls. She keeps thinking for a way for her to be helpful and always does things with the utmost diligence. I think those are what makes her character great. Of course, I'm not judging whether or not can she actually be helpful一it doesn't matter, I think her mentality is wonderful regardless. She has a beautiful heart.

What else...? The Honor Student has common sense but she can surprisingly be rather audacious at times (laughs). She got yelled at by Romeo quite a lot and while she thinks he's scary, she still says what she want to say to him. It's really nice. She'd say something like, "But wouldn't that be this way?" (laughs) and then got yelled by Romeo again (laughs) I love her audacity.

Other than that... she can be a bit weird and funny (laughs) I mean, the Honor Student is a bit quirky, isn't she? Sometimes you get dialogue choices that makes you think, "Are you really going to say that here?" (chuckles) Like, "fumbling life and bawling" or "super tempting lover" for example... that kind of stuff. She just suddenly blurted out something random that doesn't really match the atmosphere of the room (laughs). It always makes me laugh and want to pick the ridiculous dialogue choice.

Also the voices she makes when she's surprised aren't the cutesy, "Kyaah~" type but more like, "Gyaah!" (laughs) I adore this quirky nature of her.

There are a lot of things but she's also the character I feel empathetic with so I guess I naturally ended up liking the Honor Student a lot. I do like a lot of other non-ghoul characters like Hodge Podge, but if you ask me who I love the most, that'd be the Honor Student.
