I have mixed emotions over this deleted scene. I love that it shows that Howard is capable of handling himself in a physical confrontation, which is something we didn’t get in the canon that aired. He has some form of training, and chose to go for that rather than the gun.
But the way he just pauses and stares…. maybe let all the meds Scottie pushed through his system cycle through before trying to conduct any sort of dangerous operation, guys?

Redemption fans, why is no one talking about this?!
This scene killed me. If we’d had it, there would have been no doubt that Howard loves his son.
Look at that desperation. It’s not until he knows Tom is safe that he closes back off and starts going into full-out manipulation mode with Scottie.
My biggest issue with Howard was the question on if he loves Tom or not. He’s manipulated him, pit him agains this mother, and pulled him away from his family… if all of that was to get Whitehall alone then it would have broken my heart.
But this man loves his son. There’s more to this story.
