you shiver, wrapping your arms tighter around yourself. you can feel steve’s eyes on you. the two of you are walking back to the avengers tower after being forced to attend a stark industries press release. apparently, having the avengers there was a major booster for views.
“are you cold?” steve asks. he looks concerned, his eyebrows drawn together. it makes him look like an adorable puppy with muscles.
“no, i’m fine.” you smile politely, mostly not to worry him.
just as you start to answer, a particularly cold breeze hits you and you visibly shudder, your teeth cackling. now there’s no denying the fact that you’re freezing your butt off, the goosebumps on your arms providing even more evidence.
steve shrugs off his jacket. “here, take my hoodie. i’m not even that cold.”
as you shove your hands through the arm holes, you smile. “thank you, steve.”
“no problem.” he smiles back.
natasha walks past you, the corner of her lips pulled up in a shit eating grin. you pill the mug of hot cocoa from your mouth. “what? why are you looking at me like that?”
she sticks her head out from behind the fridge and says, “i couldn’t help but notice you’ve been wearing steve’s hoodie to bed every day for the past week.”
immediately, your stomach turns to knots. you’d thought your crush on steve hadn’t been obvious. you made sure not to stare too long, not to have too many chances to embarrass yourself by talking to him, and you definitely tried to do both around nat because she was the most observant.
“he gave it to me,” you say meekly. “and i’ve been cold.”
“maybe you should go over to his room and snuggle with him.”
“nat, you know i would never.”
“never what?” steve’s voice says behind you.
you nearly drop your mug from shock and you try to cover yourself by saying, “go skydiving!”
natasha stifles a laugh, probably because you all jumped out of a plane last week on mission. regardless, you send her a pointed glare and she thankfully takes the hint because she says, “i think i’m gonna go.”
once she leaves, it’s silent for a moment before steve asks, “how come you and natasha always stop talking when i walk into the room?”
“what? we don’t do that.”
“you do.” he insists, nodding. “is it because you don’t like me?”
“i mean, you’ve always ignored and avoided talking to me, so i kind of figured that meant you didn’t want to be my friend.”
“oh my god,” you laugh, setting your mug down. “steve, i ... i never talked to you because i get nervous around you. you’re perfect and nice and handsome, so if i’m not making myself clear right now, i definitely like you.”
if you thought he was cute before, the grin that breaks out on his face nearly breaks the cute-o-meter.
