you’ve been by each other’s sides for years. you couldn’t remember a single moment when you two weren’t hip to hip. ever since pre school, then elementary…and now you weren’t so sure. you felt like your relationship was slowly slipping away, blocked by the sea of admires that flocked to his side, following him everywhere he went.

You couldn’t blame them. he was attractive, but it also hurt. you guys were once so close, and now it felt like you two were in two different worlds.

Every attempt to talk was always interrupted by one of his many friends. slowly, you distanced yourself from him. there was no point in trying. he seemed happier with these new friends.

Which was what you thought. he looked happier from a distance. you just never got the chance to look at him. and not just at his pretty face. to see him. what he really felt like…about you.

and it was soo frustrating. couldn’t you see how much he’s done for you over the years ? how much he dedicated himself for you ?

you were alone, walking to who knows were in the schoolyard to clear your racing mind. then it drifted back to him, and you immediately sigh. it was hopeless. no point in thinking about him anymore.

you turned the corner, and jumped back in reflex when you almost bumped into someone…it was him, looking at you with wide, cold eyes.

he grabbed you by the shoulders, pulling you closer. “I missed you so much…it feels so good to touch you again.” he mumbled.

your skin crawled, you missed too him to but, you currently weren’t sure if you should be happy…his hold was way too tight. you tried to squirm out of his grasp. “me too but–”“what happened ?” he cut you off.

“what are you talking about ?”

“Don’t act clueless !” his hold on you began to shake. “what happened to us, huh ? ignoring me like i’m like the rest of them…we were so close..!” he hissed, lowering his head.

“C’mon. let’s go back, like we were before.” his voice cracked like a child’s—like how you two were before all this. he leaned on your shoulder, bringing you close to his chest. “i’m so stupid for even giving them a glance. i’m never letting you go; let’s stay like this forever…okay ?”

at this point it was turning into a real problem.

These guys treated this place like it was some type of club. they would loiter around the library like it was territory they were slowly calming. and they didn’t look easy to get rid of. they would laugh like hyenas and fog the air with the smoke of tobacco. the poor regulars can’t even read or study anymore.

and as a student assistant, it was your job to handle these types of situations—student to student.

sadly, each attempt to get them to at least move somewhere else, it all ended in a flunk. they either laughed in your face or ignored you entirely.

on top of that, that guy that helped you with the books was here again. and it wasn’t even raining like last time. each time you were on the clock he seemed to be there, standing in the corner of the room. people obviously found him unsettling, but he wasn’t that much of a bother. but for some reason, you always felt his stare on the back of your neck. weird.

you felt that unsettling stare beating on you head again when you—once again—attempted to talk to those boys. it wasn’t helping. and once again you returned to the library, defeated.

rumors started to spread about that group of boys. they spoke about how they got into a fight with only one student, and they all ended up bruised almost beyond recognition.

that only meant one thing.

you found him again, smoking behind a corner with a patch on his cheek.

You cleared your throat. he shot a glare at your direction. when his saw it was you, he turned away. “what is it.” his face was suddenly flushing red. he silently cursed to himself. that was way too embarrassing to let you see.

You smiled nervously. “was it you that got rid of those guys ?”

“yeah, so what ?” he removed his cigarette from his lips.

“you’re a savior. I didn’t think those guys would leave any time soon. You’re pretty tough.” you shrugged, your smile growing more sincere. “I mean, 3 guys at once. that’s impressive.”

he clicked his tongue, his permanent scowl settling in deeper. “hah, that was nothin’,” he smirked. but his voice was fading into a soft mumble. “go away. don’t thank me for something so dumb.” ahh…his heart was racing again, and it was rushing up to his head…

oh, he couldn’t wait to hear your praise again. he got rid of them for you after all. and he would get rid of the whole school if it meant he could hear all the sweet praises you had for him…dogs do like praise after all.

He was like a rabid dog without a leash. wild and untamed and always getting into some dilemma. its not really his fault though. he was always treated as this dangerous beast where you couldn't even look him in the eye without a hostile glare back. and all these annoying wannabe tough guys looking to see if the rumor of the 'mad dog" was true, just to end up with a broken cheek.

he was used to it at this point. a constant cycle of bark, bite, fight.

he stuck out in crowds, with not only his wide shoulders or his intimidating height, but with his reputation alone. his calloused knuckles and his bandaged face told stories of many fights and unhealed scars.

he knew that with a personality and looks like his, he would never experience something as stupid as love or friendship. that was for weak, sappy guys. and weak was the last word to describe him.

then...how can a weak and sappy thing feel so good ? it was just for a moment, but something bloomed inside his heart when he met you. it felt wrong. he wasn't supposed to feel that way.

it was raining, so all students had to stay inside for this break period. he couldn't even go out for a smoke break. and the closest place to his designated spot was the library, a place you worked at as an assistant.

the door flung open with a loud bang. everybody turned their heads in unison before cowering at the sight of his patch-faced scowl, sticking their noses back into whatever book they were reading.

you sat in the corner of the room, sorting out misplace books. you swear, people never give the time to put books where they belong. and sadly, you had a problem. the final book you needed to sort out this shelf was tucked on a shelf which you couldn't reach. who's bright idea was that !?

so here you were, standing on your toes like a idiot in trying to reach the final book. then, a tall, hooded man passed by you, and "tall" was just more than enough for you to call him over. "Um, excuse me," the man stopped walking, then he turned his head, and beneath the shadows casted by his hood, there was a deep frown.

"What ?" he snarled.

You hesitated for just a moment by his sudden, sharp reply. "You're pretty tall, so can you please pass me that book with the red cover ?" You pointed to a book on the highest shelf.

hah. it was comical. you're really asking a guy like him ? do you live under a rock ? he cracked a sarcastic smile at the though. even so, he grabbed the book for you without a reply.

"Ah, thank you." You said simply, nodding with a small smile.

his mind froze. the world seemed to stop for what felt like hours, but it was only a three second interaction. when you flashed him a smile a bunch of foreign and strange feelings clouded his heart. it felt like a pat on the head, but you just...thanked him..? why ? nobody was supposed to show affection for him, even if it was a simple thank you. you even smiled ! he just did a small, stupid favor for you...damnit. what the hell was that ?

and then you walked back to your seat, sorting out the final row of books.

he clutched at his heart which was beating way to fast. he looked at you with an intense glare that looked full of frustration, but his burning face said otherwise. now the library seemed more interesting.

He fit all the checkboxes of a popular guy: tall, handsome, with some muscle on his bone. with a signature cocky grin to match. his smile was contagious—just as bright as his eyes—it could light up a entire classroom with all eyes stuck on him. he seemed perfectly flawless, like everything he does, down to each step, was calculated and practiced beforehand like a man performing on stage.

so how come all this time, the man is still single ? he has a bunch of beautiful, smart girls on his roster, and he hasn't taking a liking to none of them ?

in a mind like his he doesn't believe any of them are good enough for him. their just fans who cling on his arms, staring up at him with big, lovestruck eyes. he doesn't deserve a partner like that. no person could ever match the image he spent long and hard to form.

and it seemed like nothing could crack that mask of his.

you, on the other hand, was a bit more honest. you weren't unknown, but you weren't that popular. enough that someone could recognize your name. you formed a nice friend group with a few people. and that was all enough for you to survive this place.

to others, you were basic; dull, while he was all shine and sparkle. so how did you catch his attention ?

well, you only talked to him once, if you can even call it a conversation. when you sat next to him during a lesson.

the professor told you all to "turn and talk" to your neighbors. you did just that...turned to him and attempted to talk. he also turned, and sighed when he saw you. maybe another fan. it was awkward. you two only said 10 words to each other max, and after that you never looked back. never turned your head back for a quick glance after you saw his strikingly handsome face.

that was weird.

you were supposed to giggle a few times, maybe raise your voice a pitch higher...was he loosing his spark ? or did you think you were too good for him, huh ?

but anyways, he just smiled and nodded.

after that, he couldn't get that little interaction out of his head. He believed with just a smile he could capture the hearts of anybody. But you were staring at him—talking to him like he was the dull one, unworthy of anything you had to say. he's never experienced someone as dull as you. so unimpressed, even to your superiors. it was almost like you were challenging him. yeah, that’s right. this was just a test to his image.

for the next few days, he studied you. every little twitch of your lip to a stupid joke, or groan to some dumb one...he kept in mind. how you’d scribble on the side of your notebook when the lessons got boring, or how you’d click your pen when you were focused.

it wasn't weird or stalker-ish. he's just taking note of how he'll one day make you fawn over them just like the rest of his little fans. you were just a easy, simple test after all. nothing special. it’s not going to grow into anything more.
