history
Blake is the middle child in Mr. and Mrs. Hudson’s brood. The Hudson couple are two law professors who met and fell in love in Boston during the 70's. Between playful banter and all out debates in their tiny brown stone they had three children: Blake’s brother, a doctor, Blake’s younger sister, a graphic designer, and Blake was somewhere in the middle there.
Currently in their fourth year of grad school (currently online) kind of describes Blake's entire life really well, actually, no career (just a job) and endless grants and scholarships and the constant question of 'what are you going to do with that degree' at every family gathering.
Blake kinda just...wanders through life, sometimes aimlessly, making it up as they go along. Unfortunately, most strangers think they have their shit together whenever they say they're a masters student working at masters.
The problem is Blake doesn't feel like they have their shit together. They've always just kind of wandered through life, meeting goal after goal...now they feel like they've never been more lost: between major life events? Adrift? Existing as the perpetual student, even getting a job surrounded by books and files and paper at the Master’s Law archive. Too scared to leave the comforts of academia into the “real world” (-Joseph Hudson, 29, currently in his Stupid Fucking Residency).
Blake is always working, they're always studying, they're always passionate but they kind of exist on a hamster wheel. They don't want people to remind them of how hopeless they seem, they know, They Know, They KNOW. That's why they do this, keep running, if they're moving they can always just graze over the shallowest parts of living because digging too deep reveals things that are too dark and terrifying to traverse
Joey had been excited for this event ever since it had been announced - he liked most of the people that worked at Masters, so hanging out with all of them in something that wasn’t work related seemed like a fun time. He had just figured out where he could get some drinks, then he spotted Blake standing all by herself. Getting two drinks for the two of them, Joey smiled as he approached the other and handed them the drink. “There you go! I saw that you were kind of lonely over here and that’s kind of sad… When people are alone I just usually think about lost puppies and that makes me sad.” He said with a nod, smiling at his friend. “Are you having fun?” He asked.
blake looks up when someone approaches their little sitting area they’ve claimed and smiles when they sees joey, “wow, that’s some serious seven degrees of kevin bacon jojo, baby,” they tease, reaching a hand out for the drink because they will always encourage free drinks, “I wasn’t too lonely, actually, i was just people watching which, at masters, is really fun. Come and sit, we can people watch together.”
cherry was high; there was no denying it. she may or may not have smoked a blunt before showing up. she was on her way to getting drunk too. to her, it was honestly the only way to truly enjoy parties. their head bounced lightly to the booming music, as they looked out at the horizon, taking a panoramic photo of the setting sun. the rooftop was one of her favorite spots at masters to hang out, so when she heard that this party would be there, she figured, why not? “ ok, not to sound like the queen of small talk but this weather is fucking insane, ” she exclaimed.
blake sputters a laugh, nearly spiting up the sip they’d been about to take, “oh my god, i hate you...you did not just say that after taking an instagram mom shot of the new york skyline at dusk,” they mock, raising an incredulous brow. granted, the sight was beautiful and the party was immaculately put together and the view was actually super fantastic but really, the weather? “you’re so far gone, aren’t you?”
blake dances over to the standing table alice had been guarding with their next round of shots in hand, a wild grin on their face and a stupid wiggling brow aimed at their companion, “you’re on the next run, the bar tender is starting to look at me funny. i think he wants to call security if i get rowdy,” they laugh, sliding the shot across the table to their friend, “to masters?” they offers jokingly, their shot held up high, “for throwing an absolute rager!”
blake tosses back their next shot, a smile thats more teeth than smile on their face as they bring their head back down, “jesus! what the hell did you order me griffin?” they laugh, rushing to chase the shot down with a bit more from their lime after they’d initially sucked on it, “was that like 100 proof or something? felt like rubbing alcohol going down,” they scoff, holding their hand out for their fruit cocktail again because, luckily, griffin was someone blake could trust with their drink.
blake leaves the crowd around the bar with...a bit of a struggle before rushing to some less crowded space, “animals” they curse over their shoulder before looking for an open spot at the couches. after the fight that it was to get to and from the bar they definitely need to take a seat and they find an open one beside a familiar face. “this seat taken?” they sit anyway, a teasing smile on their lips as they sip from their curvy glass, “it is now.”
blake leans against the railing of the stair well, the sound of the party muffled by the heavy duty doors at the top, music buzzing even through the walls but overpowered by the jingle of a zipper on a cute leather wallet they shuffle in their hand. they’d texted zoey when they’d first gotten here and where they’d wait, it was a big plus that they could possibly sneak away from here without catching any eyes for blake’s little thank you gift. soon the heavy metal door clanks and blake looks up expectantly, beaming when they finally see who they’d been waiting for and not some other stranger looking for an unoccupied bathroom, “hey beautiful, what took you so long?”
blake’s head had fallen back, squinting up at the dark sky long since too light polluted to show anything more than a blinking helicopter flying over head. it’s always been like this, blake looking up and hoping that tonight they’d be special enough to catch a glimpse of a faded star, tonight was not even close to their night. their legs kick in the nearly neon blue of the roof top pool, only enough to keep them floating beside the ledge where a familiar presence lingers next to them and they lean in for the comfort and also to annoy them by getting them wet. “why are girls so complicated?” they complain (read: whine), looking up at lizzie with a pout on their lips, “i just want to kiss pretty people, can’t i just get a phd in that?”
blake dips under the pool water to slick back their hair before climbing out to get another drink at the bar. the feeling of weirdness they’d felt being in their swimsuit around their coworkers had long been forgotten once people started getting drinks in their hand and, oddly enough, it’d started to lose the no-fun-work-party vibe in the same way that a middle school dance slowly stripped itself of it’s awkwardness once the first boy and girl crossed the forbidden line on the dance floor. just as their eyeing the bar to catch an opening they see a familiar face, and squeeze in next to them, “excuse the state i’m in, i’ll be jumping back in after i get my drink,” they laugh, waving at the bar tender before turning back to hallie, “how’s your night been though? do you not intend to like...make use of the literal roof top pool?”
⠀ ⠀ ⠀ 𝐕𝐀𝐋𝐄𝐍𝐂𝐈𝐀'𝐒 𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐃 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐁𝐀𝐁𝐋𝐘 was going to get whiplash with the way it darted up to look at them . now this was insulting . she would never think of blake as such , no matter how badly they hurt her . “ is that what you think of me ? that i would think of you like that ? because that’s not what i said so , don’t put words in my mouth . ” although she was the one that initiated the argument , seeing them again made a whirlwind of emotions hit her . they didn’t leave off on the best foot . they didn’t leave off on any foot really . once it was over , it was over . valencia was left wondering , but being willing to put her pride aside to move on from the clutches of the grudge she was sporting was a challenge . “ i am ! i would be stamping my feet if i wasn’t . & besides , i didn’t threaten anything . i made a suggestion then i made an offer . that is not threatening . ” valencia argued . she wished she could just stop feeling hurt by the situation , but it was a constant reminder that maybe she wasn’t enough . was she ever going to be ? maybe she didn’t appreciate blake for what they were during their relationship because she was dwelling on the superficial aspects of it . maybe she spent too much time looking at what she wanted & not the bigger picture . it was hard to make someone happy when all you thought about for the majority of the time was yourself . but when valencia finally started to make that effort , it was almost like it was too late . a commonality that followed her throughout her relationships whether it be platonic , familial , or romantic . “ aren’t i ? what did i do that was so terrible for you to be ‘ fucked up ’ over it ? i don’t think breaking up with someone is that hard when it wasn’t like you cared anyways . ” okay , that last statement was a complete lie , but she couldn’t help but feel that way & she couldn’t not continue with her theatrical & emotional behavior . she absolutely knew blake’s way of showing affection was the complete opposite of her own , yet she still decided to throw it back at her . “ making someone look fucking foolish is not gonna make you lose sleep , b . & you still can’t look at me ? am i repulsing to you ? ”
“you didn’t say it but it was insinuated when you offered to pay me off. words mean things, vee! how am i the bad guy right now?” it was always like this, always a fight just to establish something so obvious and valencia always acted like she had no idea where these assumptions came from. it was this rollercoaster of emotions that blake just wasn’t willing to put themself through anymore, that’s why blake ended things at least, it didn’t make the end any less explosive and murky. blake listens to valencia as they walk over to close the archives for lunch but, admittedly, a lot of it is just washing over them because if blake absorbed everything coming out of valencia’s mouth they’d just get angrier than they already were. blake might hate their job but they had some dignity. “fine, if that’s how you want to see it then i’m rejecting your ‘offer’, that should be fine then.” this argument was ridiculous from the jump but it really was like riding a bike, just going along with whatever valencia said just to give her her way. “i’m sorry, what?” they laugh in disbelief, “you did not just- i didn’t care? valencia i liked you, we dated because i wanted to be there with you just as much as you wanted to be there with me, we liked each other,” if blake had to put anymore emphasis on words to spell things out for this girl they might scream, “you can’t just assume shit just because you want to be the only one hurt about all this! because you’re a big fat drama queen who has to make everything about her! i hurt too, i was there for all of our fights, i had to clean up your messes, i memorized your favorite snacks, i went out to those places you wanted to go to for a stupid fucking picture, i can’t look at you because i hate how things ended but here we are, anyways. doesn’t feel good, does it? when i’m the one going me me me, hm?” this was just their break up fight all over again and blake hated it, “i’m not making anyone look like an ass here, vee. you’re doing that just fine yourself. the only question i really care about right now, in this moment, is if you really wanna do this right here, because i’m really not in the mood.”
gianna lets out a soft snicker at blake’s words, her head shaking as her long hair brushed over her shoulder. her fingertips dance around their waist, tugging gently at the belt loop and while there is a bit of distance between them blake had seemingly rid most of it. there’d been tension rising between them for some time now, undeniably so. “only if i’m willing..” gianna tested the idea in her mind as she stole another swig from her flask, relishing in the tequila that seemed to only boost her ever growing confidence. she lifted her hand, placing a black painted acrylic on blake’s jaw, dragging up gently as she eyed them with a hooded gaze. “mmm.. maybe.” she purred as she drew close, moving only to press a kiss to their cheek. “but i like to keep you waitin’.” she quipped into their ear before pulling back once more with a shit eating grin plastered to her features.
blake gives gianna a not so discrete once over when they’re pulled in by the belt loop, enjoying their little game where they walk the fine line between dramatics and obscurities, playing at the balance of being ridiculously obvious and, at the same time, vague with what they’d want from the other. it’s these stupid little mind games that make being around gianna so fun, though. “only if you’re willing,” they repeat, playfully, eyes watching gianna’s throat as she takes a drink before their pupils blow wide at the scrape of gianna’s nail against the delicate skin of their jaw. their whole body goes tense with anticipation and deflates with a breathy laugh as they get a peck on the cheek, “you’re such a tease, i respect that,” blake chuckles as they fight off the shiver that races down their spine, “but don’t get to smug, hm? might come back to bite you in the ass.”
