Fortuna or Torchère Femme à la Corne, bronze and onyx (ca. 1867) Charles-Henri-Joseph Cordier (French, 1827–1905), one of the most innovative and celebrated sculptors of the French Second Empire, created this monumental allegorical work.

The sculpture represents Fortuna, the Roman goddess of fortune and personification of luck, who stands as a classical symbol of abundance and prosperity. She hoists a cornucopia, a horn of plenty traditionally overflowing with wealth. A deep, dark bronze on the figure's face and extremities draws immediate attention to her poise. The warm, translucent veins of Algerian onyx marble in her draped robes provide a luminous contrast. Loc. Private Collection. Dim. 164 cm H (64 1/2 in.).
