Who makes the change? When did the ‘sky’ fall from favour? How did these febrile ‘wings’ materialise? And Berlin? Wo ist the desire for Berlin in all of this? It’s easy to get nervous when the sky starts falling and there is something that seems altogether more ethereal birthed in these angelic appendages. It’s a something precariously balanced on hope (hope, like desire, being that which we wish for): frail as wax and feathers. No doubt there is beauty but exactly what is lost or found in the translation is often difficult to make out precisely: All that we can say for sure is that something has been transferred from one place or condition to another. This definition of translation and the corresponding process of transition is a good metaphor for the work of the 14 artists - 12 German and 2 Australian - presented in the two-city show Der Himmel über Berlin (Wings of Desire). Each of the artists is given a blank sheet of 32x56 cm laid paper to transport from its original virginal state to another condition via their own unique alchemical praxis. There is no direction given, no overriding theme to explore other than the medium itself: So make the medium the messenger. The Berlin works commissioned, delivered, smuggled in suitcases that make their way from Germany to Australia along old migratory routes. Paper émigrés secretly shipped to a one-night event in Melbourne, elevated in transit to ambassadors of Kunst. Call it ‘Courier Art’ if you will: Each piece become as if a lettre de cachet from some obscure Cargo Cult. Is it simply this process that suggests the illicit, as if these items demand to be displayed discretely? The whole story redolent of a truth revealed in the same way that the laid paper is a map showing ridges of higher and lower density in the manufacturing process itself? Travelling art show as vagrant revelation? A something that can only be found in translation? Der Himmel über Berlin (Wings of Desire): Make of it what you will. * Also rendered in English as Heaven over Berlin. ‘Wings of Desire’ translates into German as Flügel des Begehrens.
