Amy
Another Take On SonAmy
Possible Headcanon: Sonic has feelings for Amy, and is fully aware of it, but simply doesn’t entertain the fact that he likes her.
It’s not about him being worried she’ll be used as bait by Eggman, or that he doesn’t realize how he feels; it’s about him and his pride.
I thought about this after seeing the unused Love Tester from Sonic Mania and how Sonic reacts when he gets Amy. She is his match, but he’s uncomfortable/upset about it. He probably thinks he’s too cool for such lovey-dovey things (and Amy is the queen of lovey-dovey).
Amy’s tarot cards also tell her that he is her destiny, and her senses/premonitions aren’t usually wrong. Even when she mistakenly hugged Silver and Shadow, Sonic was actually just several feet away.
Basically, Sonic knows in his heart that he feels something for Amy, but his mind doesn’t want it to be true.
I also figure this from the numerous times some games and the Sonic social media will tease that Sonic is hiding something in regards to Amy.
Just a few instances for example:
Why won’t he just clearly state if he likes her or not?
She’s also called his “long-time love” in Sonic 06:
And Ohshima basically says he’s immature:
He avoids her and pushes her away because he doesn’t want to be in a relationship, afraid that it will infringe upon his freedom and lifestyle of doing whatever he wants whenever he wants. However, the more Amy inserts herself into his life, the more he likes her. They’ve grown a closer friendship in recent games, as Amy has become less overtly affectionate.
He also never initiates affection with Amy because he knows he doesn’t have to. Amy always gives him attention without him needing to do anything at all. Whenever Amy doesn’t pay attention to him, he notices:
Also, the “love expert” in Unleashed calls Sonic awkward (and then teaches Sonic about what girls actually like):
Sonic hides how he feels because he’s embarrassed. He’s supposed to be the coolest guy around, and yet he’s got a crush on this girl that’s been following him around since they first met, publicly proclaiming her love?
He’s just a cocky guy who doesn’t want people to think he’s soft to gushy things.
(While not exactly how I usually interpret their relationship, this was just a possibility I had been thinking about).
Amy is a very important part of Sonic’s life because she is a point of reference that keeps him from running around aimlessly. It doesn’t matter if it’s him running away from her… or if she is the destination.
What other character adds this to Sonic? No one.
I don’t think nor believe that Sonic team added Amy “just because”. A lot of people often complain about why add this female character if they are never going to make them an official couple and personally, I think all of them are missing the point.
The people at Sonic Team love to ship tease Sonic with Amy. They can’t have their fun if they were to make them a couple. Plus, considering that Sonic is a character that was designed to be as free as the wind, it makes perfect sense that the female character that they introduced to be his love interest to be the one that gives chase after him, and gave her an endless supply of optimism and a strong determination so that she could do this without ever feeling sad because Sonic does not reciprocate her advances.
The thing I like about Sonamy is that Amy first starts as just another person that Sonic rescues. After CD, Sonic would probably had forgotten about Amy, but she didn’t, and insisted over and over until she finally made her way into becoming a familiar face and then, a very close friend that he can always count on..
Over time, I think Sonic has changed into being more accepting of Amy being around him, just like how Amy seems to be moving past her short-sighted impulses and gives Sonic his space, which is corresponded by him letting her join in his adventures, so that she may never lose her interest in him. The second issue of the IDW comic showed this, with Amy displaying her understanding, assuring Sonic that she loves him so much that she would never do anything to take away the things he loves like his freedom and adventurous life, to which Sonic responds that it’s not like it’s all or nothing, and that she is welcomed to join him.
However, one element of Sonic’s personality that probably keeps him from ever being openly affectionate is not just the pride in his rightfully earned image as a cool hero, but also his own privacy. I imagine that Sonic is the kind of people that feels uncomfortable at the idea of his private life and feelings becoming the object of talks and conversations by either his friends or strangers. This is why I think that in the 52nd episode of Sonic X, Sonic’s words were muted, because they were meant to be heard only by Amy, not by the audience.
Plus like Ohshima said, in his heart, Sonic will forever be a boy, and that includes him acting awkwardly clumsy/immature when it comes to dealing with how he feels towards Amy. The poor guy just doesn’t even know where to start, how to act, what to say… And that’s probably what terrifies him because he is very aware of the image that Amy has of him, something so important that in Unleashed he tried to conceal his werehog condition from her. But just like in Unleashed, where Amy tells that it doesn’t matter what he looks on the outside since it’s what’s inside that matters, I believe that if Sonic were to overcome his fear and doubts, Amy would show him they way

It’s funny how some say Amy is too young to be with Sonic when they’re only three years apart and are both under eighteen. Like they’re both babies yet people act like the age gap between them is like ten years. Most Sonamy shippers tend to age them up anyways. But the whole ‘Sonamy is pedo’ argument is pretty silly.
Literally lmao, and it's hypocrite of them when the same ppl ship either Sonic or Amy with someone with a similar age gap or even bigger lol they just want to have an argument to invalidate the ship and that's it
Even now, this is still my favorite moment of the IDW Sonic comic.
I love how, in just a single page, they displayed the reasons why Amy has fans, rewarding them with not just displaying all of this character’s wonderful and endearing qualities, but also gives Amy and her fans the justice they deserve after years of enduring the same BS over and over again for years by smashing and shattering all the lies of the antis!
Amy’s love for Sonic is true and sincere, a far cry from the shallow fangirl crush they said it was.
It shows that Amy not only accepts Sonic’s way of life, but supports it too! It is not about holding him back nor slowing him down.
It shows that even when Amy finally gets the chance to go live exciting adventures by Sonic’s side, she put’s her own happiness to a side and prioritizes the needs of others. Her adoration for Sonic does not cloud her judgement.
The best of it all, is that these are things that Amy has previously displayed a long time ago, the very reason why there are people who like Amy and hold her as a very special character to them.
Of course, the ones who didn’t notice where those who still remain blinded by their hate for a character that never really did anything offensive to deserve the hate. (Criticism on some of her more flawed portrayals? Absolutely! But hate over lies and grotesque exaggerations? Fuck off!)
But to be frank, I could care less because by this point, anyone that still continues to say that she is a stalker, that she is useless, that her love is a shallow and childish infatuation or that she wants to hold back and slow Sonic down are people who are perfectly aware that they are choosing to be stupid by their own free will… And no, I’m not even exagerating when I say that there really are people like this.

You Don’t Want To Know.
Does anyone else find this mandate super dumb? Sonic and Amy relationship vary from medium to medium with it sometimes being mutual like in Sonic Boom while in other’s it’s one-sided like in the early Sonic games but regardless of the medium, why tease the idea of it if you’re not going to do anything with it? There are fans who love Sonamy, yet if you’re just going to tease the relationship but not even do anything with it while also deciding that Amy will never move on from Sonic despite the fact that you don’t want any Sega characters in a relationship, then what’s even the point?
Asking why tease Sonic and Amy if they’re not going to do anything with it is like asking “why make Eggman even try to conquer the world if her is never going to win”.
IMO, the relation between Sonic and Amy “goes nowhere” because of a little thing called status quo. And Amy is not the only one governed by such a thing.
For example Tails will always remain this character that wants to be as cool as Sonic, but never achieves this goal because that is how Tails is meant to be perceived by the audience for as long as the franchise exists. The same thing happens with Sonic and Amy: Sonic is a boy at heart and is more interested on doing exciting things while Amy will always try to win his affection and chases after him.
As to why Amy doesn’t quit, it’s simple: Amy is no quitter. This girl has a super strong determination (rivaled only by that of Eggman) that makes her chase her impossible dream without ever giving up. Plus, I like that Amy will never chose to move on to be with another guy (or girl) because it shows just how devoted and faithful Amy is, traits that in the land of the rising Gundam are highly valued and rightfuly so. It demostrates that Amy’s affection is genuine, true and pure, and not this “fangirlish crush” that is used by her detractors who wish to undermine that aspect of her character.
That said, I prefer to think that when it comes to the interactions between Sonic and Amy, it’s no the outcome what matters, but how do these two characters get there. And while thay may never happen because just like Tails, that’s how their dynamic is meant to be seen forever, it’s not like there hasn’t been any progress: Ever since introduced in CD, Amy went from a complete stranger that for Sonic was just another civvie he rescues, to one of his best and closest friends, to playing their dynamic with a twist in Sonic Boom, to going back to the main series as well as the IDW comic where Sonic is much more welcoming of Amy hanging with him. Heck, it’s pretty much canon that he said “yes” to her date proposal in Unleashed. And not to mention how everyone at Sonic Team support this “not-couple-yet” and have it in a very positive regard. It even has the blessing of Naoto “Big-Island” Ohshima, who stated the only reason it doesn’t happen is because of Sonic forever being a boy at heart, but were he to one day mature, he’d definitively go for Amy.
As a fan of this ship, I can say that I don’t need for Sonic and Amy to officially be a thing because I find more enjoyment in the game of teasing. XD
