Hey Tumblr–
A couple of weeks ago we announced an update to our Community Guidelines regarding adult content, and we’ve received a lot of questions and feedback from you. First and foremost, we are sorry that this has not been an easy transition and we know we can do a better job of explaining what we’re doing. We knew this wasn’t going to be an easy task and we appreciate your patience as we work through the challenges and limitations of correctly flagging tens of billions of GIFs, videos, and photos.
Today, December 17th, our policy begins to take effect. This means that we will start hiding – not deleting – posts that contain GIFs, videos, and photos from public view that are in violation of our policy. Again, this is a complex problem, and over the coming weeks we will gradually, and carefully, flag more adult content. (Yes, we will still make mistakes, but hopefully fewer and fewer.)
More importantly, we want to clarify the things that you, as a community, have asked about the most.
Tumblr will always be a place to explore your identity. Tumblr has always been home to marginalized communities and always will be. We fully recognize Tumblr’s special obligation to these communities and are committed to ensuring that our new policy on adult content does not silence the vital conversations that take place here every day. LGBTQ+ conversations, exploration of sexuality and gender, efforts to document the lives and challenges of those in the sex worker industry, and posts with pictures, videos, and GIFs of gender-confirmation surgery are all examples of content that is not only permitted on Tumblr but actively encouraged.
We also want to reiterate some important information from our Support post:
Your content will not be deleted. If your post(s) are flagged under the new policy, they will be hidden from public view and will only be visible to you. You can appeal these flags if you feel your content was erroneously marked as adult content. Upcoming feature changes will also make appeals more manageable for those of you with multiple flagged posts. Your blog won’t be deleted if you’ve posted adult content in the past, and there is nothing you need to do if you have interacted with adult content up until now–it will just be flagged and not publicly viewable. Don’t forget too that you can download your content. It’s yours after all, and we don’t take that lightly.
What is still permitted? We’ve heard a lot of concern about what the policy does not permit, but we want to make sure that you also know what is still permitted:
Written content such as erotica, nudity related to political or newsworthy speech, and nudity found in art, specifically sculptures and illustrations, is also stuff that can be freely posted on Tumblr. Although, photorealistic imagery or photography – images, videos, or GIFs – with real humans that include exposed genitals or female-presenting (yeah, we know you hate this term) nipples or depict sex acts is not allowed per our guidelines.
Examples of exceptions that are still permitted but that you may need to appeal if they are misclassified are: exposed female-presenting nipples in connection with breastfeeding, birth or after-birth moments, and health-related situations, such as post-mastectomy or gender confirmation surgery.
The automated tools will improve. Having a post mistakenly flagged as adult totally sucks; we understand and agree that there have been too many wrongfully flagged posts since we announced the policy change. With tens of billions of GIFs, videos, and photos to review and millions of new posts every day, we really need your help to get it right.
The more you help by reporting content that’s not permitted and by appealing content that you believe was flagged incorrectly, the better our automated tools will get at classifying your posts correctly. The more content these tools review, the more they will learn the difference between what’s permitted and what’s not. Most importantly, your content won’t be deleted if erroneously flagged and all appeals will be sent to a real, live human who can make the appropriate call.
We love Tumblr and the communities that call Tumblr home. You are Tumblr. This place has always been a reflection of the voices and communities that thrive here. As you’ve always done, help us continue to shape Tumblr into the community you want it to be.
<3
So what’s being said is we have to appeal all the content regardless because sexuality is natural. Exploring one’s sexuality is natural.
Notice how they specified LGBT identities and not heterosexuality identities. There’s something to be inferred here but we won’t.
Tumblr how can you be a welcoming place to explore while censoring content. I can post all I want but I can’t see other posts that I’M looking for? This doesn’t make sense.
We support your efforts to eliminate child porn (because that was the first reason according to y’all) but when you censor everything you become the enemy you’re trying to defeat. We know you are working with groups to find child porn and those who create it. Again we salute you, but this statement with your actions are in direct opposition of each other.
Tips for the “Log Off” Protest
So December 17th is the “Log Off” Protest, to protest Tumblr’s new ban on nsfw content, and the horribly incompetent way they’ve attempted to implement this new ban. But many of us have the tumblr app, and mindlessly open it without thinking. Others have queues going and cannot pause them (which would be a cool xkit feature, hint hint), so here’s some tips I’ve gathered to help make this protest as effective as we can!
don’t actually delete the app from your devices. since it isn’t on the app store, it will be extremely difficult to get back (if you so choose)
you don’t have to actually physically log off, just as long as you don’t visit the site or the app. if logging off makes it easier to avoid tumblr then, like. go for it lmao
if you mindlessly click on the tumblr app (or are worried you will), then move the app somewhere where it isn’t easily accessible, like the second page of a folder. out of sight, out of site, right?? ahahaha… ahem, sorry
if you are like me and continuously fill up your queue to it’s max amount, you have limited options and none of them are great.
you can delete every post from your queue, which sucks. especially if you are like me and keep your queue filled, because I have 279 posts in my queue and deleting them all just to retag them and draft them would be Hell
OR, if your queue auto-posts more than once a day, you can change it to once a day. maybe even set it to post at like? 1am or something? which still sucks but it’s less of a hassle and more effective than doing nothing, right? right.
don’t just go dark on all social media! posting on other websites show tumblr and the company that owns it (Verizon, I think??) that what they are implementing is Extremely Not Good, and that the decrease of activity is ONLY on tumblr, so it’s clear what is the cause of the decrease. If you can, make sure to mention anywhere else you post that you are posting there instead of tumblr because of the protest, like using the twitter hashtag #logoffprotest, or something idk
the protest starts at 12am EST, which means 9pm PST. (If you don’t know what time that means for you, or what timezone you are in, google it to be sure). That means me in California, for instance, will actually begin the protest at 9pm on the 16th. This also means that the protest ends at 9pm on the 17th, but just because I’m weird and petty, I’m not going to log in again until 9am on the 18th
that’s all the tips I have for y’all, so good luck protesting and let’s cross our fingers for tumblr changing their mind! Otherwise, I’ll hopefully see everyone again, on some better, maybe even bluer, website…… lmao
Just so you'd know where to find us after today.
just realized the tumblr backup for beginners instructions are windows-only. has someone made instructions for mac or do i gotta?
ok, here’s a somewhat more approachable option (h/t @bananapeppers)
and here’s my simplified mac instructions for the original link, as quick as i can bc i have to go out:
Download and install Python. It’s been a long time since I did this but hopefully it’s pretty self-explanatory.
Download tumblr utils and unzip it. For simplicity’s sake we’re just gonna leave it in your downloads folder.
You’ll have a new folder called something like bbolli-tumblr-utils-3a37fe6. Rename it to just tumblr-utils.
Open the Terminal app. You can find it in Applications/Utilities or search your computer for it.
In the Terminal app, type this: python ~/Downloads/tumblr-utils/tumblr_backup.py yourtumblrurl, replacing “yourtumblrurl” with, well, your tumblr url. Press enter. Whisper “I’m in” and feel very powerful.
Wait for it to finish, and you’ll have a new folder inside the tumblr-utils folder containing all your shit!
if you have trouble, feel free to pm me although i might not be able to respond right away.
Yep
Yup!
Not just friends, but brothers. You guys know who you are, and I’m damn glad we got the chance to know each other. I’ll see you elsewhere, bros.
here’s how you can export your content
https://tumblr.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360005118894-Export-your-blog
You can export all of the content you’ve created for your blog, and we’ll package it up into a convenient ZIP file for you to download.
This message was left on @boydonick’s tumblr. It was by a troll that has been at us for years. We know exactly who he is. I’ve blocked Ron every site. I would release his name but I know that’s not the right thing. Instead I will give him the benifit of changing on his own.
Thanks for the compliments, I’m flattered you took the time to write about me. I just want want to say, body shaming is never okay. I have gone through my journey because I’ve had self motivation and held on to my goals. I follow body builders and fitness hotties on Instagram. They’re my inspiration, not insecure anonymous trolls. Not sure why you’re taking your insecurities out on donick. Who knows. I do know self love is difficult to accomplish. I’m still struggling. I am not perfect nor do I think I’m even close. Everyday I look in mirror and im seeing my progress.. and fuck, it feels good. I have gotten this far because I have pushed myself. Stayed motivated. Reminded myself of my goals.
I never gave into trolls like you. I’m doing this post only to let you know that body shaming hurts others. Doesn’t hurt us because We’ve built thick skin from the start. It’s been awhile since you left me a message. Lol. I want you stop trolling people including donick. Fix yourself, fix what your insecurities. Use your gifts for positivity.
Can I get an amen?

Real talk
The Department of Extraordinary Lobsters is putting on their Giant Lobster Claws to celebrate the discovery of this magical moon lobster, recently caught by fisherman off the coast of Maine. The pearlescent lobster, whose enchanting coloring is most likely the result of leucism, was thrown back into the sea after the fisherman discovered she was a lady lobster.

STOP ROFL you will not oppress our high yella lobster Kween
That pearlescent privilege is REAL. She was probably talking to the darkies like, “BYE! Have fun on someone’s plate! I’m going back into the sea, girl!”
She’s bleaching and we all know it!!!
