Coachella has become somewhat legendary, so, of course we are so excited to be a part of this years lineup. I personally hope to bounce from stage to tent to stage in attempts to catch one of the 8 million awesome bands/artists/DJs. Touring and traveling gives me quite a lot of time for listening and soundscaping my surroundings. I have a mix right now for late night driving that includes Jon Hopkins, SBTRKT, Odesza, Jamie xx and Todd Terje. Each of these artists inspire intense concentration without any interference, but at the same time they paint the scenery with retro/futuristic colors and architecture.
Raekwon and Ghostface, as members of the Wu-Tang, were some of my earliest hiphip/rap favorites. After “(36 Chambers)” I sought out the solo record like everybody else. While Method Man and ODB had the most pop succcess, the deeper listening were in the Raekwon, Ghostface and GZA solo efforts. Loved them all. Ghostface has truly been able to maintain. From the early 90’s to today, Run the Jewels is definitely my favorite new rap/hip hop record and can not wait to check them out at Coachella.
So many amazing female voices this year, which in my opinion, are more fun to listen to then man voices. Kimbra with her crazy layering and sampling. Florence, St.Vincent, Jenny Lewis, Angel Olsen, Sylvan Esso, Alabama Shakes and Marina and the Diamonds - all so good.
Another round of artists that I must check out at this year’s Coachella would be part of the “I wanna punch someone in the head/do 6 pushups in my hotel room/get pumped vibe” mix. Cloud Nothings (pumped in a Replacements on steroids sort of way), AC/DC (pumped in a “I wanna smoke 300 cigarettes simultaneously while gurgling Jack Daniels” way) and Tame Impala (pumped in a psychedelic pot smoke mushroom induced fever sort of way) all get me pumped. Whereas Yelle, Glass Animals and St.Lucia get me dancing like a muppet creature with limbs flailing. Kasabian is another classic that will be awesome to see. Finally, Brand New and Desaparecidos will bring the early 2000’s back in a very good way.
