synopsis: jack abbot has had a shit day. luckily, his beautiful OBGYN wife is there to save his day.
contains: night crew!!, trinity santos being a menace, depictions of birth, jack being a simp, bad bitch reader, no use of y/n
note: first 'the Pitt' fanfic.
Being the lead OBGYN in PTMC emergency department was no easy feat.ย
You constantly handled STIs, infected IUDs and the occasional birth, but it was otherwise pretty calm.ย
They called you Bear, due to your calm yet assertive approach to distressed women. Not to mention it referred to โMama Bearโ, what almost all the interns and new residents called you at the insistence of Robby.
Overall, you truly loved your job. You got to spend time with women, babies, and your best friends.
Also, your husband worked in the Emergency Department, and you two always made it a show to flaunt your marriage in front of the residents.ย
.
.
.
Jack was tired.
He got shot. No, wait. Shot at. Thereโs a difference. A clear difference that he would highlight in your eventual fight over it.ย
Whatever, he was irritated as fuck.ย
And now he had all the new gen residents bitching to him about going analogue.
He entered a trauma room, followed by Dr. Santos, Dr. Langdon, student doctors Ogilvie and Joy and senior resident Ellis.ย
โOkay, Ms. Richards, can you tell us what happened?โ He asked, frowning as he gazed over her chart.ย
Right, a woman was currently crowning the ER. Not the best situation, but it is what it is.
The woman cleared her throat, sweaty and crying as she held her bump. โMyโฆmy water broke while I was taking a hike. I had to go all the way back down before calling 911. I passed out and here I am.โ She wheezed out.ย
Jack nodded, looking around. โJoy, what are we looking for?โ He called out, gloving and gowning up.
โUhm-โ
โChorioamnionitis. Her uterus may be infected.โ Ogilvie cut her, looking over at Jack for approval.
The older man paused, dumbfounded at the cause. Great, Robby assigned him a Gunner.
Santos snorted from where she was getting the epidural ready.ย
โWeโre looking for horses, not zebras.โ
The familiar voice made Jackโs muscles relax.ย
The familiar pink scrubs appeared in the room.ย
Everybody paused, before Ellis chuckled.ย
โThank God Dr. Abbotโs here, no offence Jack.โ She snorted, already walking over to you instinctively.ย
You breathed out a smile, pulling your hair off your face. โThanks, Doctor Ellis.โย
You walked over to Jackโs side, giving him a teasing smile. โDr. Abbot, whatโs up with the patient?โ
He cleared his throat. God, heโs whipped when you use that authoritative tone.ย
โWell, sheโs two weeks premature, and was having strenuous activity before the birth so that is the most likely cause.โ You nodded, turning over to Ogilvie.
โShe would be over 100 degrees if it were chorioamnionitis.โ You explained dryly, checking the patientโs vitals.
โDr. Abbotโs the expert here, dear future doctors. She's the head of OBGYN down here. She could probably birth triplets with her eyes closed.โ Jack stated, trying to maintain an air of professionalism in front of them.
โI have. Remember Snowmageddon?โ You said, nudging his side with your hip.
Langdon and Ellis, already used to all of this, were moving in tandem, while Santos, Ogilvie and Joy were nothing but flabbergasted.ย
โOkay, Ms. Richards. Iโm afraid weโll have to give birth to your baby girl right here. You are much too fragile to go up to L&D.โ With a sigh, you sat on the chair and rolled over between her legs, pushing your glasses up.
Santos, ever the chaotic good that she was, cleared her throat. โDoctor Abbot?โ She called out.
Both you and Jack looked over to her, eyebrows raised. She paused, looking between the two.
โMama Bear, epiduralโs ready.โ Langdon called out. You nodded, going over to ask the patient if she wanted an epidural.
She nodded, gripping the railing of the gurney.
โOkay, Dr. Santos, epidural.โ You ordered, adjusting the ladyโs legs on the stirrups.
โAre you two married?โ Joy finally blurted out, looking between you two.ย
You paused, turning over to Jack for his answer.
He paused before nodding, crossing his arms. โYeah, yeah we are. Sheโs senior here though. She has about two years on me experience wise. But, yeah, weโre both doctor Abbot-โ
โHoney?โ You cut off his nervous rambling, looking up at him with those deep eyes of yours.ย
He mumbled out a sorry, turning back to the patient as she pushed. โYou guys can just call me Bear. Thatโs the nickname around here.โ You mumbled, busy checking the dilation.
10 centimeters. Time to go.
โUh, no. You guys call her Dr. Abbot. Just call me Jack.โ Your husband protested, gulping at your cautious glance.ย
Santos raised her eyebrows, surprised at the attendingโs insistence on keeping your doctor title.ย
โThatโs some feminist shit.โ She said under her breath, earning a โI know thatโs rightโ from Ellis.
โOne last push, Ms. Richards.โ You assured, hands ready to catch the babe while everybody else gossiped.
Jack watched you, eyes observing reverently as you entered flow state.
Thatโs what he loved the most about you, how focused you were when you were working.ย
The contrast of his beautiful and serious colleague from his caring and passionate wife always made his heart do a little twirl.ย
At one point, Langdon and Santos started bickering before a sharp cry cut them off.
You cooed gently, wiping the babyโs eyes. โLangdon, 9:30.โ You called out the time of birth, carefully cutting the umbilical birth while Ellis grabbed the baby, bringing her to her mama.
You turned to Jack, grinning. โThink we donโt need you here, Dr. Abbot.โ You teased, waiting for the placenta.
He smiled, walking over to your side. โYou sure, Dr. Abbot?โ
โYes, go help Robby. Poor manโs last day is already as bad as it can get.โ You ordered, pressing a chaste kiss to his lips.
He blushed, nodding. โYes maโam.โ He said with a small salute, leaving.
Trinity snorted, looking down at your expert hands. โThat was so weird.โ
โWhat? Youโve never seen Abbot act like a puppy?โ Ellis snorted, holding the metal tray under the woman as her placenta spilled out.ย
You always loved seeing the residentsโ reaction to you and your husband. Nothing could replace the dumbfoundedness on their faces.ย
Trinity nodded.
You sighed, sitting up with a backstretch. โHe knows how to abandon authority when Iโm around.โ
Joy held back a grin. โThatโs some Alpha/Beta shit, Doc.โ She hummed, bursting out into laughter at Ogilvieโs reaction.
โI donโt even know what that is.โ He grimaced.ย
You shrugged, throwing your gloves out. โWhat can I say? A man who yearns is a man who earns, girls.โ You said, walking out to go page L&D.
Trinity and Joy followed your figure, sighing.ย
โI donโt know if I want to be with her or be her.โ Joy frowned.
The hospital room was quiet in a strange, suspended way. Machines humming softly, the city muted outside the window. Angie laid propped up against soft white pillows, exhausted in a way she'd never felt before. Her body ached, her head felt foggy, and yet her chest was so full she thought it might crack open.
Sophia slept against her, impossibly small, swaddled tight and warm. Her face was pink and scrunched, mouth twitching like she was dreaming of something important.
Angie couldn't stop staring.
Mikey hovered nearby, useless in a way only love could make someone. He'd washed his hands three times already, paced the room twice, sat down and stood back up like the chair had personally offended him. Now he stood beside the bed, eyes locked on their daughter like she might disappear if he blinked too long.
"She real?" he asked quietly.
Angie smiled softly. "She's been real for nine months, babe."
"Yeah, but..." He hesitated, voice cracking just a little. "She was inside you. Now she's... here." He held out his finger, hesitating before brushing it against Sophia's tiny hand. Her fingers curled around his, gripping him with surprising strength. "Oh my God," he whispered. "She grabbed me."
Angie let out an exhausted laugh. "Congratulations. You're trapped forever."
He looked at her then, really looked. Her locs were messy, face puffy, eyes red from crying and had bags under them from the lack of sleep. And she was still the most beautiful thing he'd ever seen.
"You okay?" he asked, suddenly serious, his hand coming up to softly stroke her cheek. "You scared the shit outta me."
"I know," she said gently. "I'm okay. We're okay."
He nodded, but his jaw tightened anyway. "I couldn't do anything. I just stood there. They kept sayin' push and breathe and I'm thinkin', what if I can't protect you from this?"
Angie reached for his wrist, attempting to comfort him. "You were there. That's all I needed."
He leaned down, pressing his forehead to hers, careful not to bump Sophia. "I swear to God," he murmured, "I'm gonna do right by her. By both of you."
"I know you will." Angie said, without hesitation as she kissed his cheek. "I know you will."
๐ค
"That was such a crazy fucking shift." Angie groaned and rubbed her head as she sat on the office desk.
Richie set down a cup of water next to her and kissed her cheek. "You were a machine out there."
"I'm too old and tired to be a machine."
"Hush. You killed that shit."
She chuckled softly. "Thanks. So did you."
"Where's Soph?"
"Spending the night at her classmate's house."
"DD still not talking to you?"
Angie shook her head before standing up and heading over to the lockers. "Not since opening night."
"You know how she gets." He opened up his locker and took his things out. "She'll come around." He looked at his phone and furrowed his brows. "What the fuck?"
"What?"
"Sugar's in labor."
Angie quickly reached for her phone and saw the multiple missed calls and texts. "Holy shit. She called me like ten fucking times." She dialed Natalie's number, eventually getting sent to voicemail. "Fuck. Pete's not here. She's all alone, Richie. We gotta go to the hospital."
"How do you know which one she's at?"
"I have everyone's location."
"You do?"
"Uh huh. Come on."
๐ค
Angie and Richie walked through the elevator doors into the hallway, breathless from the adrenaline, still smelling faintly like garlic, grease, and the long shift they'd just survived. The fluorescent lights were too bright compared to the night outside, making everything feel surreal.
Standing in the hall outside of Natalie's room was Neil, Ted, and the face of a woman Angie hadn't seen in a while.
"DD."
The older woman looked up at her daughter in law and hesitantly went to hug her. "Angelina." She embraced her. "Hi, honey."
Angie hugged her back for a moment before pulling away. "How's Nat?"
"Oh, she's wonderful. She was so strong."
She nodded. "Of course she was."
There was months of unspoken words between them. Before Donna could break the silence first, the two brothers approached.
"Do you think Nat's okay in there?" Neil asked. "I heard her yell."
"Yeah, pushing a human outta your vagina will make that happen, honey."
"I'm glad DD came." Ted chimed in. "She would've been all alone."
"I dunno how she went into labor without any of us knowing." Richie shrugged. "She was in the office the whole time.
"Nuh uh. She went to get c folds."
"What?"
"She went to get-"
"I heard what you said." Angie replied to him. "Why the hell would she go to get c folds?"
"We were out."
"So you let her go alone? Nine months pregnant?"
The brothers paused and looked at each other.
"Maybe that wasn't a good idea."
"Yeah, it was a terrible fucking idea."
The door clicked as Pete walked out with a big yet tired grin on his face. "Hey, guys." He said softly.
"Pete!" Angie hugged him. "You made it back."
"Yeah, just in time." He ran his hand down his face. "You wanna come in?"
"Yeah." She looked back at Richie.
"I'll go later. Go ahead."
She nodded before stepping inside the room. She gently shut the door behind her as she warmly smiled at her friend.
"You're here." Nat said with a tired smile.
"Of course I'm here." She sat on the side of the bed. "How are you?"
"I'm okay. What time is it?"
"A little after midnight."
"You must be exhausted." She whimpered softly as she scooted over. "Come lie down."
"Careful, Sug. I'm fine."
"I already moved over."
Angie rolled her eyes and gently laid her head on the pillow, turning her body to face Natalie. "Happy?"
"Mhm." She nodded.
"I'm so sorry I wasn't here, Nat."
"It's okay." Her eyes shut for a moment. "I did it."
Angie chuckled softly and brushed some of Nat's sweaty hair from her face. "You did. I'm so proud of you."
The blonde opened her eyes. "Do you wanna hold her?"
Angie quickly stood up and headed to the sink to wash her hands. "I was waiting for you to ask."
Natalie chuckled and turned to pick up the baby from the clear bassinet. She was so small swaddled in the hospital blanket. She had a small tuft of blonde hair sticking out from her beanie.
Angie dried her hands and sat on the bed again, carefully taking the infant into her arms. "Hey." She whispered. "Look at you. You look just like your mama. Pretty girl."
"I'm obsessed with her."
"How couldn't you be? What's her name?"
Nat looked down at her fidgeting fingers with hesitation. "Well..."
"What? You named her, right?"
"No, yeah, we named her. It's just...."
"Just what?" Her gaze stayed fixed on the baby girl in her arms.
"Sophie. We named her Sophie."
Angie looked up at her friend and chuckled. "No you didn't."
"We did...."
"Like...as a middle name?"
"No."
"Well, what do you mean? 'Cause I have a Sophia. Sophie as is my Sophia?"
"Now I feel stupid."
"No, no, no. I'm just tryna understand. Her name is Sophie?"
"You hate it."
"I don't. I love it. That's kinda why I picked it."
"Well, I always loved that name, but when you had Sophia, I didn't really think about it anymore because I never thought I'd have a baby. But when I found out she was a girl, I tried really hard to love another name."
"But you couldn't."
"I couldn't. And right after I gave birth, they asked me what the name was, and it just came out."
Angie sighed and leaned her head on the blonde's shoulder. "It's a beautiful name."
"You're not mad?"
"No. I think I'm just gonna have to get used to it."
"Sophia's gonna like it."
"Sophia's gonna love it."
"Thank you for coming."
"You kidding?" She looked down at the infant. "I wouldn't miss this for anything."
A few short moments later, there was a soft knock at the door. Neil peeked his head in and smiled.
"Can we see the baby?"
Nat gave him a gentle nod. "Of course, sweetie."
Not one second later, he opened the door wide as Ted and Richie followed him.
Angie gave the baby back to her mother and headed towards the door. "Please make sure they wash their hands." She whispered to Richie. "With soap."
"On it." He patted her shoulder as she walked out, shutting the door behind her.
Donna looked up from her phone and walked closer to her daughter in law. "Angelina."
"Where's Pete?"
"Oh, he needed coffee. And ice chips for Sugar."
"Yeah, they got the good ice here."
The older woman gestured to the plastic chairs at the end of the hall. "Can we talk?"
Angie scoffed. "Now you wanna talk?"
"Please, honey. Just let me explain."
She hesitated for a few moments before nodding and sitting beside her mother in law. "Okay."
"I know I didn't answer the phone. I'm sorry. I never meant to make you feel like I was ignoring you."
"DD, you've been my mother for twenty years. You were my mother before Mikey and I were together, and you stayed my mother after he died. You are...a lot. But I love you."
"I love you too."
"When you stopped talking to me, it just felt like someone else in my life was leaving."
"Honey, I'm sorry." She grabbed the younger woman's hands. "I didn't go to opening night or talk to you because I was embarrassed."
A look of confusion fell upon Angie's face. "Embarrassed? About what?"
"Me." She chuckled softly. "I'm a mess. And you guys had made something good. I didn't wanna fuck that up."
Angie squeezed DD's hands. "DD, we would've wanted you there anyway. I wanted you there."
A slow tear fell down her cheek. "You did?โ
"Yeah." She nodded. "I don't care how difficult things may be between us. I will always want you in my life."
The women hugged and softly chuckled as they wiped their eyes.
Angie made her way through the front of the building, saying her good mornings to Gary and Ted. She stopped at her locker and set her bag inside.
"Morning, Mama."
"Hey, T."
"You doing okay?"
"Yeah." Angie grinned. "I'm okay."
"How's Sophia?"
"She's good. She has a play date after school, and then she has another therapy session in the morning. The therapist says she's been doing really good."
"Aw, I'm glad."
"Yeah, me too."
"Hey, Angie!" Chi Chi called.
"Yeah?"
"We need some hands! Come throw on an apron!"
"Looks like you're needed elsewhere." Tina chuckled.
"I guess so. I'll see you in a bit." Angie grabbed the old dark blue apron from her locker and put it on before walking to the back of the kitchen.
"Hey, sweetheart." Chuckie gave her a hug. "How we doing?"
"Good. You okay back here?"
"We needed the lady who knows the beef to get through this crowd."
Angie looked out the window and saw the line of customers wrapping around the building. "Fuck me."
"You can help us?" Ebra asked.
"Of course I can." She washed her hands as Chi Chi took another order.
"Three sweet hot, two hot!"
"Got it!" She dried her hands before she started on the sandwiches.
"Order up for Marty!"
She acted on pure muscle memory. Wrapping sandwiches, stuffing them in the paper bags. The rhythm of the kitchen comforted and enhanced her nerves all at the same time. โOrder up for Dina!"
"Angie, baby, we got no C-folds." Chi Chi told her.
"We're out already?"
"They never came." Ebra told her.
"Okay, I'll tell Nat."
After a little while, the line had finally died down. The kitchen was messy and reeked of peppers. But it was exactly how they liked it.
"You killed that, baby." Chuckie told her.
"My hands are so fucking greasy." She laughed. "I feel like I need a shower."
"Like the good old days, huh?"
"Yeah." She nodded. "Like the good old days."
"We miss you back here." Ebra chimed in, wiping down one of the counters. โWe miss our boss lady."
Angie chuckled. "I will always be your boss lady. No mater what side of the kitchen I'm on."
"Promise?"
"Promise."
๐ค
"We got two cancellations last night." Natalie said as she marked it in her notebook. "A two-top and a four-top."
"That's like two grand wasted." Angie said as she sat next to Richie across from her.
"Where'd you run off to?"
"My house. I had to shower. I reeked of grease and Italian meats."
"You need anything, Sug?"
"No, I'm okay." She sighed. "I've just accepted the fact that I'll never be comfortable again."
"You like the S pillow?" Angie asked.
"Yeah." The blonde chuckled. "Pete took it the second night, and I never got it back."
"Yeah, Mikey loved that thing."
"Where were you guys when you went into labor?"
"We were here." Angie smiled softly. "He'd benched me from coming in once I entered my third trimester. I begged him to come in one day, and he let me. A couple hours later, Sophia decided it was her time to shine."
"That's sweet." The blonde smiled. "Where were you and Tiff?"
Richie huffed and took a moment to think. "Well, the day before, I was with Mikey on this trip. She was pissed at me."
"I remember that." Angie softly smiled.
"Yeah. So, I made sure I was around all day. I'd read something about spicy food inducing labor-"
"Oh, you did not get that goddamn pizza again." Sugar cringed.
"No, fuck that pizza. Fuck those guys." He laughed. "We were going to this Thai place that we loved. And as soon as we left, her water broke."
"What was the trip with Mikey?" The blonde asked.
"Uh, we had to drop some shit off for Jimmy."
"I was so mad when he went." Angie smiled and sighed. "Was it fun?"
He hesitated and nodded softly. "Yeah." His voice cracked slightly and a soft shimmer glossed over his eyes before he wiped them. "Sorry."
The two women had the same reaction, quickly wiping their own eyes.
"We gotta get ready." Angie stood up slowly. "You sure you don't need anything?"
"I'm sure. Thanks, though."
"Yeah."
๐ค
The kitchen smelled clean and fresh. The kind of scent that never lasted very long. It was thirty minutes to open, and Angie was prepping her station.
"We're about to give the pre shift pep talk." Sydney poked her head through the door. "You ready?"
"Actually, can we talk?"
"Uh...sure."
Angie headed over to the walk-in and opened the door as Syd went in behind her.
"Listen, about the other day-"
"No, it's fine. It's my fault."
"I wasn't tryna catch you guys or anything."
"No, I know." Angie sighed. "We should've been more careful."
Sydney hesitated for a moment before speaking again. "When did it happen?"
"Right after opening night."
"Wow."
"No one else knows."
"Yeah, I figured. Carm would lose his shit."
Angie chuckled softly and nodded. "I know. Which is why I need this to stay between us. For now."
"I won't tell anyone. Promise."
"Thank you."
"Are you happy?"
The older woman smiled and nodded. "Im so happy, Syd. I haven't been this happy in a really long time."
"Good. I'm glad you're happy. You deserve it."
"Thanks. Me too."
"Ange? Syd? Hello?" They heard Carmy faintly call from the kitchen.
Angie opened the door and smiled at her brother in law. "What's up?"
"What're you doing in there?"
"Nothing." She looked back at Syd. "Just girl talk."
"Can you do it later? We're about to open."
The women glanced at each other and chuckled softly with an eye roll.
"Yes, chef."
They both came out of the walk-in and returned to their stations.
