“if i wasn’t so stressed out at the moment, then maybe i would have laughed. but at the moment, i’m trying not to crash your car, so maybe you want to stop trying to distract me.” it was just a tip, if he started laughing and lost his concentration on the road then he didn’t even want to think about what would happen. he never had been very good at multitasking - probably why it wasn’t a good idea to let him drive. 

he also noticed that speedy seemed to be keeping his hand on his chest for an awful long time and it was sort of starting to make him feel uncomfortable. “you can take your hand off my chest before i start getting any ideas,” he did offer, shifting in his seat almost in an attempt to budge the hand, “or is the feeling off my erratic heartbeat under your fingers comforting somehow?” 

“actually, not really,” he continued. the conversation was almost starting to make him feel relaxed, though not really enough to make him stop feeling like he was about to freak out. “you’re the one driving and having to focus on not crashing. though, i would rather i didn’t end up getting arrested. don’t think the collective would appreciate that, either.” no, it was probably better if they got back on time and also avoided breaking the speed limit and getting pulled over by any cops who might be in the area. 

   “you’re not going to crash my car. a snail is moving faster than you. literally, i saw a turtle give us the finger because you’re going so slow,” speedy motioned out the window, playing up the exaggeration. he grinned, “you’re fine, ariel. we’re on a deserted, straight road. you’re fine.”

   he shrugged a bit, “it was a little comforting and what kind of ideas do you have? please don’t tell me it is sex in the car. people seem very interested in if i do that.”

    speedy leaned against the door, but he kept his eyes on the other as he drove. he really didn’t have any suggestions for the other. he was driving just fine. the irony of suggesting the collective would be mad if they got arrested when speedy was taken by the collective just before he could be officially arrested for grand theft auto. he didn’t say that though. he wasn’t supposed to talk about his past. “well, at least you’re thinking smart.”

she titled her head to the side and smiled. it wasn’t as if she couldn’t ‘read the room’ but she chose not too. what was the point in being 'society’ appropriate when she was bound to get gutted at some point.

“because i was curious.” a simple and honest answer.

she chuckled, “you can keep eating y'know? it’s not that big of a deal. the thought of it is uncomfortable…not a lot of people drive huge cars. there isn’t a enough room and you’re forced to work around the inside..ugh..work.” she shook her head a few times and let out a small sigh. “it’s not like i’ve had sex before…they took me before i could get to the 'good stuff’” she rolled her eyes again as if she didn’t believe it. “so what’s sooo good about that you’d force yourself into the back seat of a car.” rhea eyed his food. “you shouldn’t let that get cold. eat, eat.”

   well, he wasn’t sure what answer he was expecting, but that was pretty much what he figured she would say. it was just astounding that in a week, two different people asked him if he had sex in a car. just because he worked with cars and could usually be found around cars not just now but in his past life, didn’t mean he fucked in cars.

    but he had. he wasn’t going to tell anyone that. best kind of sex though. however, if zero was around, he’d probably out that secret real quick.

     she kept going and going and going. he wasn’t a prude by any means. he had sex before he got pulled in by the collective and since being taken by the collective. he just wasn’t one who talked about the sex he did or did not have. 

   “you do realize that plenty of people here have sex constantly, right?” speedy mentioned, tilting his head to the side, “just make sure you’re covered cause then they see everything.”

    he continued with his sandwich and shrugged, “try it if you wanna know so bad.”

“too bad that im actually liked by the collective, they’d never let that happen.” he teases right back to speedy, eyes latching onto the other to see if he’d get a rise out of him. trying his best not to scoff at the other. after everything that had happened zero knew better then to fall back into speedy’s rotation, but at the same time he just couldn’t help himself, it was all just a big game to zero and he was certain speedy knew that by now.

“well, if you had gotten a restraining order i wouldn’t be here now, would i.” tilting his head to the side, a devilish grin spread from ear to ear.

finally the scoff fell from his lips when he’s bumped into, eyes lingering on the machine he’d just wiped down before turning on his heel to face the other’s back. “i wonder why.”

he followed the other, keeping a bit of distance between the two of them. eyes locking onto the others bare chest when he strips of his top. zero enjoying the show probably a little bit too much then he should. after all speedy was good looking and had a great body, it would have been rude not to stare.

   speedy was well aware that zero was loved. they loved anyone who would give up any sense of morals or basic human decency. zero has shown that he was willing to tear a person apart and feel nothing about it. speedy was probably his favorite story to tell. the only fun part was denying zero a chance at getting him bed ever again. even if the whole thing was a big show for zero, speedy gave what they had 110% and no matter how much zero liked to lie, he couldn’t lie about speedy being a great lay.

    he ran a hand through his hair, messing up the already birds nest of hair. it was just a curled mess. he really didn’t tend to it as best he could. it just wasn’t the top of his priority list. 

    at first, he didn’t realize zero had followed him until he caught a glimpse of the other in a mirror. he was just about to pull down his shorts when he turned to look at the other with a glare, “you got another smart ass comment? i don’t care how much the collective loves you, it won’t stop me from socking you in the face.”

☆.｡.:* eyes still navigate the surrounding with conflicted emotions. a part of her is at ease in a setting that has slowly become familiar to her with time. another part of her still lives on edge, quivering & voicing a wish to head back to the compound. it’s not safe either, nowhere is but there she could laze. there she could huddle on a furniture, close her eyes & lie to herself again.

           but somewhere she has to stop doing that & she thinks that place is now. a noise traps itself in her ears & she quickly turns over to where the sound is. there is a reminder, for a girl who constantly forgets, that she should greet him with a warped tug of her lips. if only it could be less troublesome to perfect the air of friendliness for long term instead of short term.

          her fingers raise up to return the wave, cognac hues watching his actions with mild amusement. it takes one second to register he has spoken & another to piece together mouth stuffed words. but she could do it, she’s positive about that.

   speedy continued to chew his food as he made his way over to the girl. he made sure his mouth was clear of anymore food before he spoke again, “sorry, i was starving.”

    he still had an obvious accent, one that said that korean was not his native language, but he played it off really well. his korean was a lot better than when he first arrived to the seoul hive. he was really proud of how easily he learned korean. he still couldn’t write in korean for shit, but at least he could have a decent conversation with someone. he struggled sometimes, but less lately than before.

    at the suggestion of helping, he raised a brow. there were a few people who came to help. mami did sometimes, but speedy was certain that was just a ploy to get him into bed - or in the back seat of his car. he couldn’t tell with mami sometimes, not that she ever hid her interest, but rules were rules. don’t sleep with friends. 

    “uh, sure?” he shrugged, not really minding if she wanted to help out. he wasn’t sure why she wanted to help, but he wasn’t going to say no. the sooner he got his beauty done the better .he wanted to show it off. it was a masterpiece in the making, “do you know anything about cars?”

it wasn’t the dying he was worried about. he was in this game where people were actively trying to kill him. and as he refused to kill anyone, he’d been resigned to the fact he was probably going to die pretty fast. it was crashing the car and losing the chance of having speedy as a friend which was worrying him more. if he was going to die first opportunity, then he at least wanted to have people who might actually give a shit, or at least feeling an incy wincy little bit upset about it. 

though, mind you, a lot of the veterans were used to it, so he supposed they just didn’t get attached to people to get upset anymore. 

“there it is with the jokes again,” and while, usually, he was all over the jokes and was usually the one making them, when he was trying not to freak out about driving, he really didn’t appreciate it much. but, at least speedy was actually offering some valuable tips this time and not just laughing at his misfortune. 

with speedy’s hand on his chest pushing him a little more upright, ariel was sure that the guy could probably feel how fast his heart was going at the minute. and that thought enough was enough to make him feel as though his face was getting a little red. he really didn’t expect himself to be this freaked out over driving, but the idea of crashing and the thought that he was controlling this car was enough to make his brain start freaking on him. “pissy is one way to put it,” more like they would both find themselves thrown into a death match if they got back too late. because the collective were just nice like that. 

    “i’m trying to make you laugh,” speedy tried, hoping in some way he could just get the other to relax. if he was worried about the car, he really shouldn’t be. for one, speedy could fix it, but maybe he should just be happy that the other cared enough not to want to wreck his car.

     he still kept his hand on the other’s chest for a couple more minutes before the other seemed to get the hint. still, speedy watched the other, not really noticing many mistakes. he was just glad they were on a deserted street. 

    a sigh left his lips as he looked at the other, “you must hate when i drive. the speed limit be damned.”

    speedy, as his name would suggest, doesn’t care too much about speed limits. it probably had something to do with the fact he used to race cars for some extra cash and pink slips. he really didn’t care about the fear of getting a ticket or even crashing. he grinned, “you’re doing great, pal.”

Reaching the shell of the vehicle he’s working on, she leaned against its turquoisey body, head tilted up slightly to look at him. She made it no secret in the way her eyes linger on the sweat on his temple, and on the pinkish flush of his cheeks from the heat of the work he’s been doing. It brought out a smirk on her face, and her tongue darted out to lick her lips.

It’s no wonder he has so many female clients that seek him out to fix their cars. She’s sure they keep coming back because they want him to look under a different hood too.

“Aww, you’re cute~ In plain old Korean, it just meant ‘she looks like people have fucked more than once on her hood’. I’m not saying it’s specifically you, but I won’t judge if you have, even though I know you probably have~” She took a moment to adjust her outfit – a cute white crop top, donned with mechanics overalls as pants, the upper half left unbuttoned so that she could tie the sleeves around her waist. It doesn’t need adjusting, but she makes the pretense of doing so. She also likes dressing the part whenever she comes by, making it fun for herself. “In other words, she’s looking beautiful so far.”

Stepping around to where one would get in through the driver’s door, she peered inside curiously. “Got anything for me to do? Either on the car or you, I’m feeling generous today~”

   speedy wasn’t blind to the way mami looked at him. she was one of many who was very interested in getting in his jumpsuit. if they hadn’t become friends, he probably would have slept with her by now, but he made a rule not to sleep with friends. a lot of people seemed more interest in what was in his pants than what he could offer as a person. 

    he narrowed his eyes, “if i could get a piece of won for every time someone suggested i’ve had sex in or on a car, i’d be able to fix up at least three vintage cars.”

    he rested his chin on his hand, his elbow against the top of the window. he chuckled lightly, shaming his head a bit, “i’m choosing to not answer that question and to just let you wonder about it.”

    however, he was interested in the way she was dressed. it wouldn’t be the first time she helped him out, but it was curious as to why she decided to wear barely anything underneath. he wouldn’t deny that she was attractive. sometimes, he hated his rule, but he had it for a reason.

    “thank you. i’ve put a lot of work in,” he chuckled and shrugged, “if you want to help me with the car, you can. just with the car.”

she had seen the most interesting thing on her way home from the job. it made her curious and she had a few questions to ask, but she wanted to find the right person. someone who wouldn’t look at her like a scandalized baby and try to run away from her. rhea learned that when she did speak, she was a very blunt person. that didn’t always come off well but oh well.

finally, she made it back to the hive and she wondered by the common area. just to see what was happening and find a person who she could ask. her eyes settled on speedy, and she made her way over with a huge grin. “hey!” rhea plopped down across from him and leaned in a little. “have you ever had car sex?” she whispered a little with a curious gaze. “i saw some people on my way back and from what i could see..it just looked cramp. but hey, have you?”

   speedy wasn’t actually sure what to do when rhea came over to him. he was in the condominium. it was late, he was tired from working on his car. he was just eating his dinner when she decided to pop up and ask a very inappropriate question. 

   his first reaction was one of confusion. it was a very straight forward question and it came out of no where. his second reaction was repulsion. he was eating and it wasn’t a question he wanted to be asked at that moment. his last reaction was a sigh. why did it seem like everyone was only interested in his sex life?

    “and your first response was to come to be... because?” speedy questioned, with a raise of his brow.

N o r m a l . That seems to be what everyone else’s life is like, like what one would read in a fairytale or in a novel. They have routine, safety, maybe a job to go to, day in and day out. They have people around them who care, people to laugh and to cry with. Their worries might be putting food on the take, or paying the next month’s rent, or where to holiday for the next season.

They don’t seem to be teetering on a tightrope as much as she is, falling off and hanging by a thread enough times to be dead if she were a cat.

But, even though they’re given the opportunities for a normal life like everyone else, as candidates that an illusion that’s just as easily shattered. They don’t have the same autonomy; they don’t exist.

The Collective own them. They’re their colourful little dolls.

Playing with dolls means playing pretend too, right? And that’s what Mami does. She falls into the life that is better than what she had, but there’s a sense of disconnect in her mind. She focuses on what thrills her, what she desires, moving from one thing to the next, even if it’s the mundane that she wants to experience every once in a while.

There’s nothing that says that she can’t want ‘normal’ too.

“Heeeey, Speedy~” she chirps, stretching her arms up over her head as she lazily strolls into his mechanic shop. In an unusual turn of events for anyone who knows her, she’s actually learning bits and pieces here and there from the attractive male, fueling a lesser known curiosity of hers for knowledge. More often than not, she doesn’t delve into this side of herself, leaving it to some to simply file her away in their minds as a promiscuous thrill-seeker than one they need to keep an eye on. After all, what’s anyone got to worry about from a dumb whore?

For ordinary people, this would be a job, or an apprenticeship. Mami is not responsible enough for either, not that she wants a job in a first place. Only popping in when she feels like it, it works out for the other too; he doesn’t have to pay her, and she ‘helps out’ every now and again.

“Oooh~ Whatcha working on today? She looks like she’s had a few wild rides on her bonnet.”

   speedy found that more often than not, people came to his shop to see him. he didn’t mind it too much. he was a people person. there was only one person who shouldn’t come around because speedy would be half tempted to throw a wrench at them. they’ve been smart to keep their distance.

   his main attention was on the car he was fixing it up. it had been four month since he started. it was a complete restoration too. he managed to get his hands on an old broken down american 1955 cadillac s2. it was a light sea foam green (at least it was now). honestly, all he could keep was the actual outside of the car. the insides, including all the parts and interior were completely gutted. he managed to have a few sponsors who liked him enough to donate their money and resources and the rest, speedy did easy missions. he still wanted to keep as much of a low profile as he could manage. 

    he was working on the inside interior. he was doing this all by hand, no machines to really help him out. he was welding some pieces together when he heard someone call him. he stood up right where the driver’s seat would be in the future and pushed up his mask, “oh, mami. hello.”

   he sat the torch down and pulled off the mask, setting it down too. it was heavy and he was hot from the torch. he leaned up against the top of the glass. from the outside it looked like a car, but it had no real inside yet and no wheels, so it was still a hunk of what it could be.

    the male furrowed his brows at the woman, “uh, sure. i’m going to pretend i understood that. my korean doesn’t strong enough to understand whatever joke you just made.”

☆.｡.:* already the temperature slowly falls with the comets of red, orange & gold. there is irony in how the world springs alive in colour during the season of autumn. maybe it was a reference to something, such that there is a certain sort of beauty in falling. or dare might she say in death too. but the latter is an idea she still fears understanding even when it familiarizes itself with her so often.

      so the girl will choose to forget it. instead her attention focuses on the soft grasp of golden threads still tangling around her. sooner or later the rain will come in to settle & there will be no sunlight to remind her to uplift herself. don’t take anything for granted. not now, not ever.

　　❝   speedy, are you there? ❞　 carefully the girl calls out into the shop garage as she walks around the area, hazel hues searching. the strong scent of tar & oil pounces on her senses, something that has become mildly familiar now that she’s begun to converse with this boy. 

  　　❝   i came to visit again, ❞　 and to learn a bit more about the mechanics of a car, her mind inserts but she bites her lips to stop it from spilling her intentions quite yet. she has to find him first.

   if speedy wasn’t at the condominium, it was safe to assume he was in his shop. it was unnamed and no one really knew of it. he really didn’t need the money, not that he really asked for much. most of his clientele was people in the condominium who were lucky enough to get a car or motorcycle, but on occasion, a random person arrived.

   speedy just liked to be working on something and there wasn’t much space in the condominium, so he wanted the shop. he needed it. if he was going to live his life in that place after what they put him through, he was going to do it his way - and that meant taking apart cars and rebuilding them.

   he was still working on his latest project. souping up an old 1955 cadillac and having it run like it was brand new. it looked bright and shiny, but the actual workings under the hood were still in the works. 

   he was in the back, eating a sandwich he brought when he heard someone call for him. he stuffed his face as he went out, brushing his hands over his already stained jumpsuit. with a full mouth and messy hands, he entered the main floor and offered a wave. he opened his mouth to great the girl, but he stopped, realizing his mouth was full.

   speedy held up a finger and turned, quickly chewing before he could manage some words, “hey... waz... up?”

    he was still struggling to chew, but at least she could probably tell what he was saying.

learning to drive was really just starting to stress him out. this was probably all just a bad idea and speedy should have never let him in the drivers seat. this was just going to end horribly and ariel wouldn’t be surprised if he ended up crashing. which he really didn’t want to do because he doubted speedy would take him trashing his car very well. and if there was one thing he didn’t want, it was someone who really really wanted to kill him because, when it got down to things and they were shoved into an event, speedy would very much be allowed to kill him with no consequences. which did sort of suck. 

“i’m too busy trying to concentrate to be funny right now,” he huffed, not really appreciating the criticism on his jokes. it was really not the time to be criticising him, instead, he should be trying to offer tips. the guy was supposed to be teacher at the moment and, so far, he didn’t seem to be doing much teaching. 

his grip on the wheel just tightened, foot starting to shake a little on the gas. this driving thing was not as easy as people made it look and he couldn’t really say it was down his alley. “easier said than done,” he was rather quick to come up with another excuse as to why he was not going any faster, “just let me do things at my speed, alright.” 

   honestly, seeing ariel get flustered was rather entertaining. maybe from years of speeding down the streets of japan with little regard to his own life and stealing cars and nearly 4 years in the collectives grips gave him little fear when it came to the possibility of dying. at least, behind the wheel. in missions, he did everything he could to survive, but when he was in a car, he had no fear. he wondered what a therapist would say about that.

   “ariel, you’re doing fine. i mean, that turtle didn’t even see it coming,” speedy offered, trying hard not to laugh all too much. he ended up laughing, but he leaned back, “first, you need to relax. you’re gripping the steering wheel way to hard and you’re hunched over. that’s not good for you.”

   speedy reached out, pressing his hand against ariel’s chest, pushing him back so he was sitting straight, “you are checking your mirrors, which is good, but you’re checking them too much. you should do it often, sure, but if you have to move your head like you are, you are either about to move to another lane - which you’re not - or you’re mirrors are properly positioned.”

    he kept his hand on ariel’s chest for a minute, “otherwise, for the most part, you’re fine. also there are like barely any cars around and we do have to get back to the condominium within 72 hours or well, ya know, the collective gets pissy.”
