IT WOULD BE MORE courteous to invite their conversation elsewhere. indoors. some place warm and private instead of outside, cold and pristine. perhaps a part of her wishes to make a conversation that she increasingly doesn’t want to have more difficult than it needs to be, when topics certainly demanded sensitivity instead. but ciel continues to lead ruby through the streets of atlas, her boots clicking against the pavement as she frowns and listens to snippets of magic and maidens and relics. ciel slows to a stop and holds up a hand. ‘ … why are you telling me this at all? ’ there is no guarantee that she will invest herself in these events. she doesn’t know half the people that ruby has arrived in atlas with, their names murky in her mind from the months-ago tournament. and the stories being told to her are frankly astounding even if she has little reason to doubt ruby’s sincerity. it wouldn’t be worth the journey from vale to mistral and now atlas only to weave a fabrication into her ear.
‘ do you want me to join your effort, or is it because you knew penny? i’m only concerned about school right now. ’
ruby kicks her feet as they walk through atlas, occasionally blowing up a bit of frost or snow from the ground. her cape is wrapped around her shoulders to keep warm, as their winter armor has yet to be completed. she doesn’t mind terribly though--she always liked the snow.
there’s no smile on her face to betray her genuineness when ciel stops her. at the mention of penny, ruby’s shoulders drop a bit, and she looks to the ground for a moment.
“ i’m telling you because... ” a deep breath. “ you deserve to know. we didn’t find out until m o n t h s after pyrrha died because of it. after penny was killed to set it into motion. it’s not fair of them to keep this from us if it’s so dangerous. ” she looks up finally, silver eyes glimmering with tears she’s desperately trying to fight back.
“ you can come with us if you want, or fight with us if it gets to that. i’m not going to make you do that. not when i know what it does. but you deserve to know before anything happens like it did at beacon or haven again. ”
