A Quest To Learn Blender In 250+ Days

Let’s not sugar-coat it!! Unfortunately a soft reboot is needed after a terrible start with this project. There’s no point explaining exactly what happened so let’s just quickly move forward with the current situation. I've layout a road-map to clearly guide what task and other objectives that need to be completed. I’m also working on a very unique adjustable schedule to accommodate for any unforeseeable events. I’ll be posting that schedule at a later date. Also I’ve got the twitter.

Note: ALL TASK ARE TIMED.

Task 1: INTERFACE

Explore Blender's new UI and other features. -- Duration: 2 Weeks.

User Preferences / Create Workspace. -- Duration: 2 Days. (Note: Working Progress)

Hotkeys Layout. -- Duration:  (Linked 1-2)

Task 2: SCULPTING

Explore Blender option for creating Sculpt models. -- Duration: 3 Day.

Follow a Sculpting Tutorial lesson until completion. -- Duration: Timed Only. 

Add speed sculpting on weekly schedule. (Use Boosted Application). --Duration: Always Timed and attempt to surpass previous best time record.

Learn the fundamentals of UV Mapping and textures. -- Duration: 3 Weeks.

Explore Nodes and Shaders. -- Duration: 3 Weeks.

Task 3: GREASE PENCIL (2D ANIMATION)

Start Understanding the core fundamentals / limitations of Grease Pencil for full animation production. -- Duration: 2 Months.

Understand key-frames with Blender's UI. -- Duration: 1 Week. (Linked)

Find a method to implement CSP (Clip Studio Paint) for Cel-shading. -- Duration: 3 Days.

Task 4:  MODELLING / OTHERS - Subject  to change depending on progression of other  three main tasks*

Create a fully rigged 2D/3D model for possible production purposes. Duration: Ongoing Timed  *Note -  Basically it's a small project to understand the mechanics of rigging.

Understand Dynamic Camera movement and lighting rigging. Duration: 2 Weeks

Start several short Case Studies on successful blender or other animation project. Duration:  Ongoing Timed

VFX /FX Training.  Duration: Ongoing Timed

Always complete and record Daily Blender Tips. Duration: Timed

Find suitable lessons and workshop groups via online. Duration: Timed

A Short Declaration Of War Against Blender

So the campaign begins...

For the longest time ever since I can really remember I've always been interested and inspired by the many incarnations of the media form of animation.

Especially blending different visual elements and styles into one unique motion feature from the critically acclaimed Katsuhiro Otomo Akira, Ghost In The Shell, Blood The Last Vampire, Cowboy Bebop, Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust and can't forget the Amazing World Of Gumball.

Seriously Gumball really needs more recognition that it currently has in the animation industry.

There's so much more, but I just don't have the time to list them all. Animation has always been a vital part for me growing up. Didn't matter if it was anime, western or any other global animations. They were all major influences. Even the really bad ones.

Honestly, I could really have a deep conversation about this topic in more detail from my early years till today, but time is currently not my ally. So maybe that's another discussion for a different time.

Blender has always been an odd unique kind of monster when I first had a glance a so many years ago prior from the latest release build. The moment I downloaded and opened the application I was extremely overwhelmed by the very problematic and intimidating UI (User Interface).

I mean seriously the number of drop-down menus was straight up startling. Like an endless spiral of into pure madness with the very questionable design elements and misunderstood choices.

But regardless it's an open source application. It was expected to have a few drawbacks. I was still very much interested in dabbling around with this creative creature. I really wanted to master or even somewhat tame it and explore the many benefits it had to offer from the endless examples illustrated across the Internet by well-educated individuals from hobbyists and industrial veterans.

If they could accomplish amazing pieces of work I should be able too. Plus I love learning new software for creative purposes.

I gave up two days later...

To be honest, It wasn't just the UI that helped solidify my final outcome to drop learning blender, but it was the difficulty finding suitable or well-structured tutorials online at that time period.

For example, learning Photoshop on my own was fairly easy with its informative interface and the hundreds upon hundreds of accessible tutorials and resources available.

On rare occasions, I would re-download Blender just to have another trial run and hopefully develop some kind of liking to the application.

I really wanted to love it, but unfortunately, every time I tried I would only be frustrated with the outcome and leave the application to fester on my hard drive once again without any attention for another couple of years or uninstall the damn program.

Fast forward to 2018.…. The Blender Foundation dropped the biggest bombshell ever since releasing the open source application to the world. The Blender 2.80 initiative!

To quickly sum it up it's a complete full overhaul of Blender with new groundbreaking elements, but one of the biggest features it's the new user-friendly interface and the development of grease pencil.

The first time in years I was extremely impressed and excited about the grand possibility with the new incarnation of Blender. I was willing to learn again plus with the new influx of tutorials and courses I was definitely sharpening my blade and my wallet for this Onslaught.

I started reading more and more articles about Blender 2.80. I watched videos just about anything about the application I wanted to know. This was the exact moment I've been waiting for. No more excuses.

MY DRIVE FOR BLENDER WAS REIGNITED!!

I'll be documenting my blender journey to the fullest of my abilities. This will be including any type of data that I think might be useful for anyone willing to know my progression. I welcome any kind of constructive criticisms, support and resources. Blender 250+ mission begins on 6th of May 2018.

Ground Rules Of Blender 250+

Three Foundation Ground Rules That Must Be Followed!

Must open Blender everyday without fail for at least 31 minutes or more. If failure occurs add an additional day to compensate.

Once a week post a full documentation summary of Blender progress. For example achievements, resources, time statistics and other information gained.
