taken from the broadway musical. feel free to change the pronouns as needed! ( tw: mental illness, grief, self-harm, drug use, suicide, cursing. )
‘ it’s 4 in the morning, is everything ok? ‘
‘ you need to slow down. take some time for yourself. ‘
‘ great, thanks, i’m so glad i know that. ‘
‘ some days i think i’m dying. ‘
‘ it’s just another day. ‘
‘ it only hurts when i breathe. ‘
‘ we’re the perfect loving family. ‘
‘ mozart was crazy. ‘
‘ everything else goes away. ‘
‘ without a little lift, the ballerina falls. ‘
‘ use may be fatal. ‘
‘ love is blind. ‘
‘ love is insane. ‘
‘ i don’t feel anything. ‘
‘ our planet is poison. ‘
‘ this planet is pretty much broken beyond all repair. ‘
‘ i could be perfect for you. ‘
‘ we can be the one thing in this world that won’t hurt. ‘
‘ this is crazy. ‘
‘ i miss the pain. ‘
‘ nothing’s real. ‘
‘ i miss the mountains. ‘
‘ i miss my life. ‘
‘ it’s gonna be good. ‘
‘ do i look great? i am! ‘
‘ he’s not here. ‘
‘ do you dream or do you grieve? ‘
‘ this is fucked. ‘
‘ i know you’re hurting. i am too. ‘
‘ do you wake up in the morning and need help to lift your head? ‘
‘ do you know what it’s like to die alive? ‘
‘ you say that you’re hurting, it sure doesn’t show. ‘
‘ can you tell me what it is you’re afraid of? ‘
‘ can i touch you? ‘
‘ look at me. ‘
‘ tell me who to be. ‘
‘ you just don’t know who i am. ‘
‘ i love you as much as i can. ‘
‘ i am mystery. ‘
‘ i’m alive. ‘
‘ i’ll hurt you. i’ll heal you. ‘
‘ i’m the perfect stranger who knows you too well. ‘
‘ catch me, i’m falling. ‘
‘ you know what the problem with classical is? it’s so rigid, structured, you have to play the notes on the page. there’s no room for improvisation. ‘
‘ there’s a world where we can be free. ‘
‘ i could never be alone. ‘
‘ didn’t i see this movie? ‘
‘ you’re kidding, right? that’s bullshit. ‘
‘ our house was a home long ago. ‘
‘ i can’t get through this on my own. ‘
‘ wish i were here. ‘
‘ you don’t remember any of this? ‘
‘ i couldn’t give a flying fuck what’s normal. ‘
‘ we haven’t had a normal day in years. ‘
‘ you remind me of me, and how fucked up i can be. ‘
‘ why would you want to remember the things that hurt you? ‘
‘ i am more than memory. ‘
‘ what happens if the cut, the burn, the break was never in my brain, or in my blood, but in my soul? ‘
‘ medicine isn’t perfect, but it’s what we have. ‘
‘ i’m dancing with death, i suppose. ‘
‘ things will get better, you’ll see. ‘
‘ we tried to give you a normal life. i realize now, i have no clue what that is. ‘
‘ something next to normal would be okay. ‘
‘ we’ll get by. ‘
‘ am i crazy? ‘
‘ i might end up crazy. ‘
‘ i am the one who loved you. ‘
‘ there will be light. ‘

“You’re cold as ice! How long have you been out there?”
“They’re saying to stay indoors until it passes.”
“If you want to beat the snow we have to leave now.”
“Calm down, we won’t need to burn books to keep warm.”
“I think my eyelashes are frozen…”
“I was avalanched off the roof.”
“Work was cancelled because no one can get out of their houses.”
“You’re lucky you didn’t lose any fingers or toes.”
“Look at you! You’re so cold you can’t even move your fingers.”
“Is gift shopping really a good enough reason to be out here?”
“Are you crazy? It’s up to your waist out there.”
“I suppose the blizzard isn’t so bad if it means cuddling.”
“Oh god, Being snowed in with you sounds worse than freezing.”
“I can only handle so much time stuck with you.”
“There’s a storm coming, I can feel it.”
“I don’t see any lights…Go check on them, and take them some candles.”
“It smells like snow is coming.”
“I hear carolers coming.”
“Would you leave those poor carolers alone?”
“I’m sorry, you signed /who/ up to go caroling?”
“Happy Holidays!”
“Where on earth did you find a sleigh?”
“Careful, if you fall we might not find you until spring.”
“Everything smells like ginger and cinnamon.”
“Way to go, you kept singing White Christmas and made the storm too powerful.”
“You were curled up asleep by the fireplace like a cat.”
“We should go Christmas tree searching.”
“What do you plan on doing for the new year?”
“Oh no, you’re not dragging me out there.”
“….Did you just use fire to clear the walk?”
“I’m going stir crazy”
“This came out of nowhere.”

“Help, I lost myself, again…”
“But, you’re cold as a knife.”
“Teach me how to fade away.”
“But, I wish you’d tell me, too.”
“I just want you to set me free.”
“I like the way they all scream.”
“I could lie, say I like it like that.”
“You should see me in a crown.”
“Don’t you know too much already?“
“Don’t come back, it won’t end well.”
“I hope you don’t think that shit’s fair.”
“Don’t you know I’m no good for you?“
“I’ve been watching you for some time.”
“The games you played were never fun.”
“Heart made of glass, my mind of stone.”
“What makes you sure you’re all I need?”
“You’d say you’d stay, but then you’d run.”
“You can lie, but I know that you’re not fine.”
“Oh, I hope some day I’ll make it out of here.”
“No fair. You really know how to make me cry.”
“Watch me make ‘em bow, one, by one, by one.”
“Somebody new is gonna comfort me like you never do.”
“Somebody new is gonna comfort you like you want me to.”
“You can pretend you don’t miss me. You can pretend you don’t care.”
“But, I know someday I’ll make it out of here. Even if it takes all night or a hundred years.”
An awful scent wafted over to the side of the room she was on, and she couldn’t help but be incredibly distracted by it. She could only hope it wasn’t one of the children. She hated to think that way, but she had to figure out the source of the smell.
“Thank you, excuse me,” she said before turning to follow the scent as it became more intense. It led her to a trapdoor built into the floor of the school house. She gingerly pulled up the rope to reveal several large pigs right under the floor.
Then from underneath the floorboards came a grunting sound, and some of the younger children began to giggle.
Clara could hardly believe her eyes as she watched the pigs under her schoolhouse. She gently shut the trapdoor and tried to quickly compose herself.
“They’re just hogs, ma'am,” Ruby smiled. “They lay down there cuz it’s cool an’ out of the sun.”
“Oh, I see,” she said, taking a deep breath. Clara smiled at the girl, not knowing what else to do. She still needed to complete the roll, she needed to get all their names down. She wanted to know more about them.
As she continued to take roll, she found herself learning more and more about the children she would be tending to and teaching. They all brought their own unique personalities to the table, which would make for an interesting class in the least.
There were many families in this Cove, quite a few of them were related. Emma and Neal and Bae were all smiling at her through the day. And then she came to the youngest of the girls, who stared at her with big blue eyes.
It was nice to have a few friendly faces in the class, she was so lucky to have met them before the first day. She could feel some of the underlying tension in the classroom, but she could only push on and hope for the best.
She gave a kind smile and knelt down just a bit. “And what is your name?” she asked softly.

“I’m sure we’ll get along just fine,” she murmured. Though she wasn’t sure if she was trying to convince him of this, or herself. She was nervous, she could feel the telltale wobble in her legs. She slowly walked down the aisle between the desks filled with children, trying to pull her throughts together and compose all her thoughts. If she rushed in, she would end up stumbling over her words and making a mess of things, she had to be composed in this.
Some of the children behind her talked to eachother quietly, saying how pretty she was, or how nervous she was. Bae swung his legs happily as he looked up at her.
She could hear them whispering, she could only hope they didn’t turn cruel. She gave a small smile to Bae, having already met the small boy before. She looked down just in time to see a foot in the aisle. She had to put her foot down about this now, Killian had warned her about this.
She fixed him with a serious look. “Sit up straight J.J. Hatter, and please take your feet out of the aisle.” She was soft, but she was firm. She had to show she wasn’t to be messed with.
J.J. looked up at her with challenging eyes, his jaw clenched, but he slowly took his foot out of the aisle. He was going to be a problem child, that much was certain.
She took a deep, shaky breath before pulling herself together. It was a little victory, at least he did what she asked of him that time.
She turned back to face the whole class, catching the eye of Ruby, one of the only other familiar faces in the class. “Ruby, will you help me take roll please? I need the first and last name of each child, as well as their parents names and home address,” she listed as she picked up a notebook from the front.
“O-Oh, but Miz Clara, I don’t know if I’m able to do that,” Ruby said, nervous, but she joined her teacher by her side anyways.
“Of course you can, you watch me do a row and then you’ll see,” she said, getting her pen ready as she walked to the first row. She smiled at the child in the seat, she was genuinely excited to get to know them all.
“Name please,” she said.
The boy looked up at her and smiled. “Front name be Slate Aster, back name be Quarry.” he said.
Clara made sure Ruby was paying attention to her as she began to take down Slate Aster’s first and last name. It would be much easier once Ruby understood the system and could help her out.
Once she had it written down, she shifted her eyes back to the young boy, “And, what’s you’re address Slate Aster?”
