Could he taste his blood in his mouth or was that just Alistair's dreadful attempt at rabbit stew? Oh, Maker, if it was raw-- Samuel promptly opened his mouth and spat his meager mouthful back into the admittedly rather cold bowl of food. There wasn't any pain, so he definitely hadn't bitten his tongue or anything of the like.
Maker's balls, it was raw, wasn't it?
The Warden shuffled back some, away from his fire and the one companion who may have unwittingly poisoned half the camp with a badly prepared meal. It looked very undignified of him, shuffling on his backside like a child who had yet to learn to walk, but he cared little about appearances when in camp.
He ended up close enough to Leliana to be able to talk over his shoulder in a low voice-- Alistair would not overhear.
"Is yours raw too or have I annoyed Alistair by throwing around one too many royalty jokes, do you think?" A half-joke. A half-miracle, really.
Morrigan wasn’t certain how to feel about the Wardens’ return, it had come as a shock to see him breathing and giddy; bouncing one foot in front of the other as if he were a proud dog back from a successful hunt. “You have returned from the wilds… alive?! What news have you?”
Such excitement dwelled in the depths of her soul while he continued on, apparently injured in the right eye but it wasn’t entirely her concern. Not right now, “Dead? You actually managed it? I barely dared to hope ‘twas even possible. And there you have the real grimoire.” Greedy cat-like eyes ghosted over the leather bound book just under arm, truly this was the luckiest night of them all. Free from the burdens of a murderous mother and the fate of being taken over; she’d survived, despite with the help of another.
How eagerly she reached for the book tucked under Wardens arm, not at all politely either, “and so here it is. Fantastic!” How she squealed out, delighted and relieved all at once, and yet such happiness had just as quickly dwelled into a small simmer, “and.. thank you. For helping me. No one has ever-…. thank you.”
How foreign the words were off her tongue, how… strange. To rely on another for one’s survival… hopefully such a task would never come to be again.
Brief laughter broke from him at her apparent surprise. Perhaps it was for the best that he not allow himself to think about how she'd sent him on an apparently impossible task. Maker knew that was all he seemed to do nowadays anyway-- face impossible things. The Blight, a damned dragon witch, finding the Urn of Sacred Ashes. He didn't really want to know what everybody expected him to do next, but he supposed he'd face it when the time came.
None of those unpleasant thoughts could really wipe the smile from his face though-- and Samuel barely wanted to blink hard to clear his vision, lest he miss the sight before him. It seemed as though he was close to being able to see again though, and he couldn't quite help himself. He did resist the urge to put his gauntlet-clad hand anywhere near his eye though. Didn't want to go blind, after all.
An eyebrow raised at her thanks. That was... surprising. Welcome enough to pull a smaller smile onto his lips now at that little miracle, a calmer reaction perhaps. Truth be told, he hadn't really done it for any kind of thank you. She had just asked him so... he had.
Alistair and Sten's considerably easier requests had yet to be fulfilled, however.
"There's no need to thank me, Morrigan," he said, the smile still there on his lips as he shook his head. "You asked me for help and..." He paused, trying to think of how to word it without insulting her. Strange. He'd never stopped to think about words before. "I understand what it must have been like, having to ask. But I didn't do it for your thanks. I did it because you asked." Another pause and the smile twitched itself wider. "I hope you find everything you need from it."

“Afternoon. You lost?”
"I... find myself... lacking the knowledge of where I am, yes." Samuel furrowed his brow. "Are you planning on enlightening me?"

He looked so proud. A little excited, too. Sure, he was covered in a great deal of his own blood-- caked in the stuff, actually-- and was probably going to wind up with a few new scars but he'd done it. Not only had he killed a dragon, he'd killed Flemeth. So there was an understandable bounce to Samuel's step, the grimoire tucked under his arm.
The Warden stopped by her fire like he had so many times before, though now, he had a wide smile on his face. I've done well.
"She is dead. I cannot see out of my right eye currently, but she is dead. And I have her grimoire," he announced, removing the book from beneath his arm and offering it out. "I trust you will find what you wanted."
It was often that men eyed her, such a thing was commonplace, dull even but it never failed to spark amusement within the depths of the pirate. Yet there was something interesting about this, familiar, and recognizable within the own smudge of a smirk the man before her donned.
“Cheat at cards? Me? Never, that’s completely unheard of,” the dark skinned woman laughed out a whisper, a hand falling upon swell of her breasts in faux drama. Amber eyes narrowed, fanned by dark lashes and a pretty smile - he did look familiar. “Though, the only man who happened to accuse me of such and walk away with fingers intact was a member of the Grey Wardens… ” Her tongue clucked against the roof of her mouth, hand dropping back to her side with shoulders relaxed.
“You wouldn’t happen to be him, now would you? Because that would make this very interesting indeed.”
Samuel raised his hands, as though he'd been found guilty. He was even chuckling, though it sounded very wrong to his ears. Unfamiliar. Truth be told, he was running out of reasons to be laughing, despite Morrigan, despite a son. Ah, times were hard, it was understandable.
"Samuel Cousland," he smiled, tipping his head forward and moving out his arms as though he was bowing. They dropped quickly enough, the unpleasant twinge that just seemed to come along with the Taint setting itself into his bones. It could've been his imagination, but he rather liked pretending that it wasn't. This just made him a hero out of all those old stories, didn't it?
"Grey Warden, runaway King of Ferelden, whatever you'd like to call me," he chuckled. "Still a captain, I trust?"

A King did not abandon his people. Until he did. Until he felt empty enough that he had to leave and track down the one woman who had made him feel any kind of... joy for Maker knew how long. The witch was gone and Samuel was miserable, so he made his plans, prepared, left.
It had been weeks since he'd set off, months maybe. He was going to be honest, he had rather stopped caring about time. The Taint was creeping up on him day by day, of course, but... it didn't really feel like it mattered without her.
If she could see him now. He laughed at that and it was a foreign and strange sound to his ears. Before he had time to realize he liked it, a figure blocked his path. Unfamiliar and, along this road, a potential threat. Samuel readied himself just in case.
"Ho there. I just wish to pass."

It was... nice. To see a familiar face, no matter how long ago he had met her and how briefly he had spoken to her. Long enough to play a game, lose his patience and swear a lot. It felt like a lifetime ago though and... well, Samuel was happy to welcome the memories from a rather interesting year.
He looked the woman over for a few moments before giving a rare smile. Maybe that was what dying men did. Smile. Finally. Maker, it almost cracked his face it had been so long since even the smallest little grin had graced his features.
"You wouldn't have happened to be the certain captain that tried to cheat me at cards a... very long time ago, would you?" Maker, he sounded pleasant. Maybe the Taint was a mixed blessing.
you know it’s true love when your girlfriend turns into a ugly nauseating giant spider but she’s still the most beautiful woman in thedas to you (◡‿◡✿)
Tis’ all so unexpected. I have no experience with any of it. And yet I find myself wanting it. Hungering for it. For you. That is not right, is it? That is not how a normal woman acts? I can see it in your eyes. Release me. Tell me that you wish to end this. Make me believe you and I…will be grateful.
Well the man whose face she looked up at as hooves approached hadn’t been the one Lucy had been looking for. No, the description she’d been given was of an older man, forty or so, greying hair, very pronounced featured. This man was young, not too much younger than herself she’d guess, not a grey hair in sight, and his features— well, after having realised this was not the man she needed, she’d not really bothered to study him.
Her job was simple; hand over the money pouch and don’t cause a ruckus. That was all. She’d been told he’d be here at the tourney, she didn’t know why, wasn’t like people in her line of work got to do anything as fancy as this, but here she was, hoping the information she’d been given was correct. It wasn’t like she was comfortable being in such a high-power place.
“Sump’n like that,” she mumbled as her eyes resumed searching. The faster she located the man she’d come for, the faster she could get away from this idiot.
Ah, she was looking for something-- or somebody. Everything his mother had ever told him (and his nanny, of course, though he was far too old to say that aloud now) made him think that he should leave her be, let her get on with it. Had she been less pretty, perhaps he would have but the mood of the day and put him in a different mindset, enough for him to decide that he wanted to stick around this woman.
"You're looking for somebody?" he asked, eyebrows raised some as he turned to take his horse's reins so he wouldn't sod off. He was soon looking back to the woman, pausing only briefly to offer a gauntlet-covered hand. "Samuel Cousland. Son of the Teyrn of Highever. I'd like to help, if you would allow me."
Shepard was an arrogant man. Rude, haughty, condescending, whatever other adjective someone might use to describe a man few would ever wish to associate with. A standard sour-faced dewberry. Naturally, being approached by a stranger just because he seemed lost did not bode well with him. He turned to meet the unknown, his usual frown in place.
“Not all who wander are lost, like they say. Even so, it’s not exactly any of your business, eh?”
Samuel had had the time to grow re-accustomed to people treating him with all the respect a nobleman deserved. Perhaps he shouldn't have been surprised, standing there looking in no way like a King of Ferelden might be imagined, but his jaw set and his brow furrowed firmly.
He could tell from the other man's armour that he was a Warden. That only made it worse, that he didn't know his face-- or at the very least have a general idea of what he looked like. Samuel raised his chin.
"Perhaps not, but I do take interest in the well-being of my subjects." He flexed his jaw. "Assuming you are Fereldan, you would be looking at your King."
