Jude startled awake. A piece of paper was stuck to her face, leaving imprints of braille on her face. She blinked the sleep out of her eyes. “I swear I wasn’t asleep. I was just resting my head, taking a break.”

Jude slowed to a stop in front of the freezers at the grocery store. She peered into the freezer, looking at the ice cream in it. “Hey, what kind of ice cream do you want? I might end up buying it all if someone doesn’t stop me.”

Jude sprawled on the couch. A few papers on case law were on the coffee table, a few of them stained with the coffee that she had been drinking throughout the evening. “Sometimes I regret becoming a lawyer. I should’ve just become a goat farmer.”

Jude laughed. “I think I need to start paying more attention to my surroundings then.” There was a lot she needed to filter out in order to function at all. “Reading makes me zone out apparently. I’ll work on that.”

he’s caught off guard, steps halting at the fact that anyone could’ve heard him talking to himself under his breath. he turns, spotting the only person close by in the almost abandoned library. he quickly takes in the braille, the way she doesn’t focus on him, and he approaches a little, makes sure his voice is understandable as he speaks. “sorry for the interruption, ma’am.” it’s genuine, official. an apology given in the tone of the captain. “i’m steve rogers. you could’ve heard me on t.v. or radio. maybe some internet sites, i think, depending on what you’re into.”

The knowledge of what she should and should not be able to hear had never been something that she was too sure about even before she had her memories played with. She shook her head. “You aren’t interrupting anything interesting at least. I’m just reading some boring corporate case law.” The voice sounded more clear now, vaguely familiar in the same way the voices of the PSAs that Catholic school had loved so much. “Oh, wow, the Captain America.” She might never stop being a little starstruck when she met heroes. “I think my uncle Foggy would disown me if I didn’t at least ask for an autograph.”

Theo shrugged. “I don’t have an amazing memory, so whether your face is unforgettable doesn’t really matter.” He quirked a brow, shifted slightly to the left, then met her hand with his and shook it twice before letting go hastily. “Theo. Theo Hansen.”

“I’d be a pretty bad lawyer if I didn’t have a great memory. I think I have to drop my dad’s last name if I ever mix up supreme court cases.” Jude joked. “Nice to meet you.” She dropped her hand to the side.

“ sorry , mom , i’ll call you back , “ naomi slipped her phone into her back pocket and turned towards jude. “ i’d hope so ? it’s naomi. “ kind of an ex… whatever. the mutant didn’t like to get into the details of her mess ups. 

Jude smiled. “Hi, Naomi. It’s been a while.” It had been a while since she had seen most people who weren’t in her family, more concerned with getting back to a normal life than re-meeting people she had known before. “How have you been?”

“i’m sorry,” she spun on her heel to face jude, and the apology tumbled from her without thought - the posters had been an inspired idea from a student that jean had confided in, but she only realized now they were flawed in at least one aspect. “i think my evasiveness has ‘done me dirty’.” a chuckle that was unusually somber left her lips, and she straightened up, “the group is for people who’ve died and come back. there are no other requirements - i don’t need them to promise they’ll open up. i just want them to know they’re not alone.” 

“Huh.” Her death, or the fake that it had actually happened, wasn’t a well known fact—her family deciding it was the best way to keep her identity a secret after she had come back. She’d seen a therapist about, not that they were any she could find that specialized in people that came back from the dead. “I assumed the came back part. I don’t think ghosts would appreciate therapy that much.” She joked. “It seems like a useful therapy group. I don’t think many superhero or superhero-adjacent people stay dead for long.”

“It’s the Murdock-hero-complex. It’s inescapable. Just wait until I’m letting clients pay me in chickens.”

Jude offered a smile. “The last names familiar, at least.” She didn’t know much, heard the family mentioned in passing and spoken about like people spoke about Fisk. It didn’t do much to endear to the woman. Still, she smiled. “I don’t we know each other, though. Until this year, I hadn’t left New York City that much. I’m Jude Natchios-Murdock, by the way.”

“me?” he paused, taking a moment before sitting next to her. “i lecture here and have done at some conventions and stuff, if you’re into science? if not – i don’t know. i’m peter parker, though.”

“Science isn’t really my thing. I work at Stark Industries but just in the legal department. So that’s probably not it. Might just be a fluke. Voices can be hard to place, sometimes.” Jude said. “I’m Jude Natchios-Murdock.”

“Possibly,” he replied, quirking a brow. “Do I know you??” he met her question with one of his own, as he did often. “I can’t say yours is familiar, but maybe if we keep talking then that will change in future similar situations.”

“Probably not then. I’ve been told I have a pretty unforgettable face.” Jude laughed. Normally, she was better at voices but somethings remained jumbled in her mind. “I’m Jude Natchios-Murdock.” She held her hand out purposely a few inches the the left of him. “It’s nice to meet you.”

“Yes!” Rohen jumped up and yelled in excitement, something rather unbecoming of him. “I submitted a seventy-five page thesis and didn’t break down more than twice!” He burst to tell the nearest person.

The stress of law school, the hours of studying cases and debating anything they could, was still fresh in Jude’s mind. Turning her attention the man who yelled, she smiled. “That’s a pretty huge accomplishment. Any plans to celebrate?”

“it’s a therapy group,” she explains to watching eyes ; deft fingers finishing what her mind could have done in seconds, poster freshly pinned to one of the school’s notice boards. she’d enlisted help in its design ( handmade would have taken too long, and she wasn’t skilled enough on a computer to make anything nice on her own ), ensuring that it was both tasteful and informative. while the headline didn’t betray the purpose outright, the little text bubbles below said exactly what jean couldn’t find words to, aloud. “for a certain kind of person.” the resurrected. it was explained better in ink. “i think it’s reached a point where, if it isn’t you - it’s someone you know.” 

“A therapy group?” Foggy had found her a good therapist nearly as soon as Jude was back in New York. I know you Murdocks see beating the shit out of people as therapy but I think you need the real thing kid, he had told her.  It focused more on what she had done in the aftermath, the guilt that weighed her down. Not the icy coldness that followed her, and not the feeling that she wasn’t quite all back. She fidgeted with her cane. “For what kind of people?” Despite her senses, she still needed something to be in braille for her to read it. “Something serious then. What kind of epidemic is Paragon facing now?”

Jude stopped her reading, her fingers stopped. She turned her attention to someone near her. “I’m sorry. Do I know you?” The voice sounded familiar but too many voices sounded familiar nowadays. “I swear I’ve heard your voice before.”
