“oh, please.” fingers dig into her palms as eliza’s voice sparks up in the back of her mind, reminding piper that she’d promised her the least amount of detentions possible for the remainder of the holidays. piper hasn’t left her stance, refusing to step back regardless of how close he is. “you know, had it been us out there, i would’a knocked you on your ass before you even thought about catching the snitch.”
well that’s not exactly a rise he wanted but it’s a start and he turns so that he’s standing in front of her, arms crossed across his chest. he hadn’t bothered taking off his uniform after the game. why do that when people are way more likely to congratulate him if he’s wearing the thing? “yeah right, pipes, you’re not nearly as good as you think you are.” and he’s a teenage boy dripping in arrogance as a defense mechanism so he’s not going to let this go.

there’s a pretty good chance he won’t win this but the fear of loss has never once stopped him from diving head first into situations. it’s who he was.

★— Realising that he was taking his gifts for granted – Steve did tone down a little. Though it wouldn’t prevent the fact that he was modest by nature. Back when he had started being Cap he was a bundle of nerves; someone who could barely hold their own, yet alone bark out a speech that was meant to inspire men who had volunteered their lives to WAR. Times were dark and they needed motivation, and what they got was a man in tights trying to hold himself together. Though, when he’d seen his first Captain America figure, as odd as he had found it, it was endearing – he couldn’t shake that.
❛ Just don’t revel in it. Humility is key here, I know you have heroes that bask in the attention but given the negative press the Avengers have been getting, I would recommend that you enjoy in doses. And I know you won’t, but just in case, don’t let it get to your head. I don’t need to tell you that, though. and yeah – well, maybe even get him to design ‘em, give em features he likes his gizmos to have. ❜
He brushes off the emotions that had been stirring up in his gut, the idea of never belonging of never being a part of the team of never being the man Steve seems to think he is capable of being. An action figure won’t change that but it would be a sign of something, he’s not totally sure what but he thinks that it would ease some of his constantly mounting anxiety about his place in this team and in this life. Being a criminal was easier. Sure, it constantly felt like a part of his soul was dying but at least he knew he was good at what he was doing.
“What’s wrong with a little basking? We save people’s lives I think we deserve a chance to act like it sometimes.” He’s young man, just barely out of childhood really, and he has an ego the size of their tower, it’s going to take something awful to bring that down. Right now he feels immortal, that might be what gets him killed in the end but for now he wears in like armor.

she laughs, both at his confession and at the way his eyes run unabashed across her form, as she makes herself comfortable on his lap. her arms find their way around his neck, fingers gently running along his neck and what part of his back she can reach. “looking at my butt is very fun to you? or are you just tryin’ to sweet talk your way into making sure i actually wear this?”
“why not both?” he can be sweet talking and just enjoying her being barely clothed in his lap, clint doesn’t feel the need to just pick one or the other. tilting his head slightly he pressed his lips to her jaw in a quick kiss. “does that mean that if i keep saying sweet things you’ll wear it?”

“yes, one-hundred percent absolutely, really.” she mirrors him when he moves closer, resting both her elbows on the counter top and leaning as close as she can. she swears, she’s going to remember this moment for the rest of her life, clint being ridiculously cute, eyes wide and voice higher than she’s ever heard it be. piper doesn’t care that he doesn’t have a ring, she kind of figured this whole thing was rather impromptu to begin with, which is very clint-like. it’s his explanation for the absent ring that gets her, face going warm and red, her chest tightening. “—-what you just said is better than any ring you could ever give me.”
she has enough time to see the smile break out on his face, but then he’s suddenly in front of her, and she barely has time to fully straighten up before he’s kissing her. piper laughs into the kiss, standing at her full height, and then on her toes, to give his back and his neck a bit of a break. her arms lock around his neck, unwilling to be anything less than as close as possible to him.
“holy shit.” the words are let out as a whisper against her lips and then he’s kissing her again, arms wrapped tight around her waist and not willing to let her go even when he does pull back to suck in some air. his chest tenses and his mouth opens like he’s going to say something, tell her again how much he loves her, tell her that he wants to spend every day of the rest of his life with her or something else like that but instead all that he manages to do is let out a noise somewhere between a laugh and a sigh, some mixture of disbelief and relief at the same time. so instead of trying to talk again he kisses her, nearly lifting her up in his arms before catching himself in that movement.
there’s still dinner on the table and probably things they should talk about but right now that can wait and he lets his calloused hands move her her waist to cup at her cheeks gently and when he pulls away from the kiss he knows there are tears in his eyes but he can’t find it in himself to care at the moment. “we’re getting married.”
