New Make Up Tutorial Now Online

Hello tumblrs! My new make up tutorial is online. Full video with voiceover walk through coming soon, but with the Denver Zombie crawl this weekend I might not get to it before then. Video will be up by Halloween so hopefully I can help someone with their costumes!

So what kind of zombie are you going to be this year? Me personally? I'm thinking Steampunk zombie with a twirly-doodle jutting out of something. Fun times!

I jumped some steps with pictures because I was taking videos. This is the end result after all layers have been applied. Apply way to blend the plastic to your skin. Smooth the way with the soft part of the make up brushes and then apply two layers of liquid latex, letting the first later dry before applying the second. After the latex has fully dried, start applying dark creme (preferably black) to the inside of the wound and the edges of the "skin". This creates depth and a sense of dirt.

Apply Dark red to the edges and inside of the wound, then bright red to the border of the latex wound and along the tips of the wounds. Finally, apply yellow creme sparingly along the edges and in small pockets to create a diseased appearance.

Zombie's are back in style!

Wow! It's been so long but halloween is here again! With that I've got some cool new stuff to share, a new special effects vollunteer, and some big costume plans this year.

I'll be posting some Halloween DIY ideas for decorating the house, as well as a brand new make up tutorial! I should have had this up last year, I admit, but now that the best time of the year is rolling around again, it's time to hit the ground running! (or in my case get started well into the projects, then decide to post about it)

Zombiecrawl 2011

That was one crazy party. Thousands of people flooded Denver, CO on 10-23-2011 and most were the recently dead or long dead shuffling about. It was nuts to see so many people but the reactions to my costume and my girl friends costumes were priceless. I'll be posting pics of all the folks who came out and took pictures with us soon!

Hi I was just wondering what kind of makeup did you use? btw, I Love your work!

Thank you! I used only the basics as I wanted to show how to do it budget-style. The make up was made up of a latex wound, spirit gum to adhere, stage wax to blend the wound into the skin, and the gooey reds, purples, and little yellows, were a "injury stack" pallet available at spirit Halloween stores that comes with 5 different injury types.

A $2 baby doll from a thrift store. Took a few prosthetics, the same one I used on the other pictures from today, and some make-up wax.

My friend Andria after i applied a $12 prosthetic and $5 of make up. I had a lot of the make up left over and saved it for later tests. This could have easily covered her whole make up costs.

Zombiefest 2011

Got confirmation that I'll be attending Zombiefest 2011 in downtown Denver. Plan for now is to have a station for us to do some make-up work for folks and do it live in front of them.

I'll be posting more images of my work later this week, including a how-to guide for budget beginners. I know Halloween customers can get outrageous but you can make good special effects from the cheap plastic molds with the right stuff.

My senior film Blog of the Dead - Follow Zach Stubbs as he bravely faces the horrors of humanity and takes up his own just cause - Equality for Zombie-kind. As supporters remember, only YOU can lend a hand. Or foot. Leg, perhaps?

This was shot in my apartment on a $750 budget. Using rented equipment for the actual film gear, I spent most of that on make up to practice for the actual thing. I wanted the zombie to look great, even if we didn't make the film we wanted, I knew I had to be happy with the make up. I did a lot of tests and this is the result.

A New Beginning!

Welcome to Blog of the Dead, a blog for those who love all things zombies, films, video games, books, anything you can name. This blog will be a celebration of the flesh rotting creatures. I will update the site with news on zombie developments, game cameos and opinions, and many others.

I hope if you're visiting you share my enthusiam. Films and games are a wonderful medium and will be my primary focus, although when i have time between work and this, book reviews will come.

Another view of the bite wound test, this time directly on top. I did several tests before I was satisfied I could make the wound look realistic. I never had the chance to use this kind of a wound in my film, but it was fun making it and good practice.
