FINALLY POSTING THESE TWO!! My current Jak and Daxter ocs: Kace & Koda!

I am a very new fan to the Jak and Daxter series! I bought the first game on a whim around September/October and have been slowly but surely getting through the rest of the series since. I’ve fallen in love with the games, universe, and characters and couldn’t help but create some OCs of my own :]c I’m REALLY proud of how they came out!

The TLDR on their backgrounds is that they are both experiments of Metal Kor, but due to circumstance, lead very different paths in life: Kace trying to live up to Kor’s legacy since death, whilst Koda is busy forging her own path >:]

If anyone would like to know their stories in depth, you can read summaries of their backgrounds below! It’s not perfect and needs some tweaking (these were drafted up quickly for Art Fight) but I love what I’ve come up with for them.

Dark + Light Jak doodles to ease my mind since school starts in 2 days

so about a year and a half ago my partner got on a nostalgia kick for Jak & Daxter, and i - having lived under a rock growing up - had never actually heard of it before! the conversation very quickly evolved from "well, it's a lot more fun to play than to watch being played," to "there are a lot of elements that it touched on that it never really explored as in-depth as it could have," to "you know what, if i'm gonna introduce you to one of my favorite games, i'm gonna do it with STYLE," and they ultimately ended up spending the next sixteen months writing me a complete bespoke novelization of the first game on discord one message at a time XD

(i love them so god damn much. i'm already planning to bind their currently-ongoing J&D 2 writeup.)

anyway, i'd always meant to get into bookbinding and this seemed like the perfect place to start - never mind that the formatted document was 160k+ and 500 pages long, go big or go home, right?

i emerge from my extended hours in "baby otter convinced it's dying when put in water before it realizes it was built for swimming" crafting skill-tree purgatory to show you: my first-ever bookbinding project!

i got the cover paper, endpapers, spine & corner leather, davy boards, and embroidery floss for sewing up the signatures from michaels. the text block was printed on 24-lb, 50% recycled 96 bright copy paper from staples. i made my own book press out of two cutting boards and some assorted hardware, and a bit of research into leather paring led me to this blog post by a professional book conservator, who recommended razor planes for small-scale leather paring as a step below an actual spokeshave - i found one for $20 on ebay and it turns out it works PERFECTLY, strongly recommend. i used a combination of @armoredsuperheavy's how-to document and DAS Bookbinding's round-backed bradel binding and half-leather library binding tutorials for the case.

i formatted the text block in google docs, using Epilogue for the body text and Shadows Into Light for the headers. i used the in-game Precursor script for the covers, spine, and foretitle, done by screenshotting individual letters from a translation chart and assembling them in MS Paint, and the splash title features a nice series logo vector i yoinked from its wikipedia page. i used this tool for doing the signature layout. i did have to do quite a bit more line-editing than is probably normal for fanbinding since i was taking it from a raw discord copy-paste to a Formatted Novel(TM), but my partner gave it the okay and it did give me the chance to come up with some fun chapter title names XD

using sealemon's text block sewing tutorial let me colorcode the binding thread to which portion of the elemental powerup progression of the game was being covered, with the added bonus of adding an extra little pop of color to go along with the concept art portraits, character model/gameplay screenshots, and a few of their own original illustrations my partner included while they were writing! i ended up just doing a buttonhole stitch in black for the endbands, since i didn't have any pre-made ones on hand.

i don't have a cricut and i don't know how to do the fancy heat-transfer vinyl thing, so i just had to make do with a 9 mm olfa knife and several hours' worth of patience for the cover text XD

what ended up working really well was to lay strips of delicate-surface painter's tape onto a sheet of printer paper, print the assembled strings of text onto the tape, and cut out the lettering to make a custom sticky stencil! put it on the book where you want it, pat it down really good, and fill it in with a couple coats from a fine-tip Posca paint pen. peel it gently back up, and boom - beautifully crisp painted lettering! :D

(in case anyone's curious, the spine/front cover/foretitle say "JAK AND DAXTER", the front cover additionally has "SQUID" as the author name at the bottom-right corner, and the back cover says "IF YOU CAN READ THIS", "YOU'RE A NERD", and "I LOVE YOU". the game devs apparently included all KINDS of easter eggs in the in-game text that people have translated over the years, i couldn't NOT, lmao)

Figured it was past time that I drew some new Jak n Daxter art! I wanted to do a proper sticker for these two, so finally pulled this design together. :D

Ok *cracks knuckles* I'm gonna make an attempt to make my version of Samos at least a little sympathetic. Asshole Samos is always fun to make fun of but ill try to make this work just for fun

One thing first, I'm adding a bit of lore about eco. So, using dark eco can lead to corruption, but the same thing can happen with all eco types, its just is less aggressive/slower. If you use one type of eco constantly over a long period of time, you'll start suffering from effects/mutations.

So to start, young Samos is a loser. He naturally has an affinity for green eco and nature, but due to what Haven becomes and how rarer eco is to track down, he's not a strong sage. That being the case he puts more work into wits and tactical planning, gaining him the position of 'the shadow'. His smarts is the only thing that gets him this role, as he's a complete toss when working with others. When he's told by Onin about how important it is to track down Mar/baby Jak, he does it for the sake of the revolution, as well as to prove is abilities to a powerful sage. He didn't really like being a babysitter, but did have every intention of putting Mar somewhere safe (mostly so the kid was out of the way and not something Samos had to worry about on top of everything.)

When he's sent to the past with baby Jak, he's totally thrilled about being in a world overflowing with eco, and goes abit overboard with using it as much as he can. At the start he did start growing fond of Jak, which is what initially made him soft enough to let Keira live with them, but using so much eco while being as untrained as he was led to him becoming detached (got stuck in a mind set of needing to do anything for the sake of the timeline/keeping the balance/sage mumbo jumbo) and he went back to thinking he just needed both Jak and Keira close by so he was sure they were with him when they returned to the future. (is also why he's more cruel with Daxter as he see's him as a chaos point/anomaly in the timeline)

When they all do end up in Haven, Samos is put in prison where the branches attached to him are removed, and he slowly loses the connection to eco he had gained in Sandover. Without this power making him a little bit crazy, he comes to the horrifying realization that he basically became what Gol and Maia were, and his nulled emotions lead him to sending a bunch of children into a war-torn city. Samos tries to warn is younger self about what he'll become, but is meet with a much more arrogant version of himself, who has no interest in heeding the warning of a very frail, weak and powerless Samos. "I'll do better than you" which is how everything ends up repeating. He also get to witness first hand his younger self verbally abusing Daxter (he's already seen how much Jak suffered from all of this and how important Daxter is to keep him grounded) and finally realizes 'omg, all I was doing all this time was watching over someone else's destiny, all I had to do was make sure no one died, and I did it in the most egotistical, unpleasant way possible. what is wrong with me?'

The end of the second game also marks the end of Samos's knowledge of the future. He doesn't know if anything will happen next. During all of the third game Samos is the one who puts the most work into getting Jak out of the desert. He feels like not doing everything to protect them now will just prove he only ever saw them as a means to an end, so if he at least ensures the three are safe and happy now, maybe he'll deserve some forgiveness.

A big thing is that he outright apologizes to Daxter. Its slightly awkward and Daxter thinks he's messing with him at first, but he tries and that's more than anything OG Samos did.

So to summarize, Samos is a sad little nobody in his youth so acts really know-it-all to compensate for his lack of self image. When exposed to a high amount of eco, he lets his want for status turn him into the worst version of himself. Only when he's severed from this power does he become aware of how similar he was to Gol and Maia, which sends him spiraling into damage control for the sake of the kids he cares for. yes, that includes Daxter.

Jak X is where he acts less like an overprotective father stopping Keira from racing, more like an estranged grunkle who loudly supports all his kids throughout the championship.
