today is this blog’s four year anniversary…… four years of the stinky fishman who woulda thought!

been thinking about emil lately.... unfortunate

one thing i do like about emil’s characterization in the shulkie show is his disinterest in / apathy towards the hulk. because yeah— why would he continue to blame banner when his issue, even before getting juiced, has always been with higher ups and how they hide information that ultimately gets his squad killed.

emil shouldn’t care about the hulk. at least, not this version and not once he’s in his right mind. there’s lingering resentment there, sure, but banner was just another target. while the mission to capture him was a loss and he does take that as a slight against his good record, when it comes down to it, emil did get what he wanted from him. he came out of that mission as close to a god as possible. so as far as he’s concerned, he can lock banner away in the back of his mind like all the other mission targets.

on the other hand, ross is the one who destroyed his life. he represents everything emil had an issue with before he even volunteered for the serum. ross was the one who tried to leash him; the one who kept him locked up for over a decade. he swept all responsibility for what happened under the rug while hiding his own involvement in the destruction of harlem and benefited from emil’s incarceration while he was dishonorably discharged. that is who emil has beef with. and i hope that now that red hulk has entered the picture, we get these two back on screen together to hash it out soon.

kind of crazy how the shulkie show bringing back tim roth after 15 years unintentionally played into emil’s fears of aging and then they didn’t even have the guts to expand upon it.

like a very important aspect of emil’s character as established in TIH was his fear of aging, specifically the fear of his body giving out on him and not being able to fight. he was a career front line soldier who was already feeling the effects of the constant wear and tear of war on his body. he likely had less than a decade left before he’d be forced out of the field ( assuming he survived that long ofc ), made to either retire to a quiet civilian life or finally accept that desk promotion he’s been putting off for years.

between being stuck in cryo for an unspecific amount of time and the super soldier serum, technically emil really shouldn’t appear any older than he did in TIH. but ofc tim roth as a real person can’t just stop aging so just by virtue of it being 15 real life years later and them not recasting to someone younger, his portrayal of emil is going to appear to have aged similarly. shouldn’t that have been brought up at least once??

idk i just think it could have been nice to get some kind of closure on that fear. does he still have it? or does he simply not care anymore because becoming abomination makes it all kind of a moot point — because in the end, he did become the godpower he was chasing. he won. while before he would have balked at the idea of growing old, does it not matter what his body physically looks like so long as his ability to fight remains?

i know i have it listed on his carrd but i don’t think i’ve ever mentioned it on the dash before so, casual reminder!

even though emil has full control over when he turns into abomination, there are still aspects of his transformation that are out of his hands. namely, the way his body remains permanently mutilated even while human. his eyes always seem slightly sunken in, just a degree too deep to be considered healthy, and both his rib cage and his spine visually protrude outward, with bones pushing against skin pulled too tightly around a human frame. when he transforms, these bones are always the first to break, cracking and expanding and splitting open the skin that barely holds him together as more skeletal growths take form. and despite the soldier serum that runs in his veins, he still experiences pain in these areas while human ( after all, the serum doesn’t make him invincible, it just means his tolerance for pain is higher ). breathing can be agony when his diaphragm catches on the unnatural formation of his ribs and the aches along his spine never quite go away. it’s a chronic kind of pain, the irritating kind that he can mostly ignore until it becomes just another facet of living. background static. he knows these are the consequences of trying to cheat nature ( he won but at what cost? ). he can pretend to pass himself off as human but these mutations serve as a constant reminder that no matter what, there will always be something monstrous about him. something he can no longer hide.
