âIt certainly sounds like youâve got your work cut out for you, then,â said Lily. She couldnât deny the appeal; it was getting to be nerve-wracking, always guessing, being so unmoored. She thought she might try to find some things out herself, although she was better used to more circuitous methods. âAnd I hope you find out something satisfying. Or give them hell for fucking with us if you donât.â
Lily took her wineglass, inclined it towards Lizzy in the vague hint of a toast, and drank. âI wish you good fortune, Lizzy. When the ark turns upside down, Iâll applaud your handiwork.â
Then she put her fork and knife down, thought for a second, and said, âAs for me, I do intend to stay, yes.â
This was the first time she had articulated that thought so clearly, and yet she knew it to be true. What followed on its heels was even more surprising: I think I might like it here. It was not a home, nor did she mean for it to become one, and it was infuriating and incomprehensible. But here she could be Lily Vaswani, and no one would question it; here she was no oneâs servant; here it did not matter to anyone but herself that she was always arguing with herself, that she didnât know what she wanted, or that she was a different person from day to day. The only thing that hurt was that she would never see Yuzuru againâbut she stopped herself there. No more moping. Instead, she cocked her head, thought a bit more, and said, âI had just betrayed my House, you see, by murdering my father.â
She felt herself break into a smile; she couldnât help it.
Lizzy was convinced the encouragement was only half-sincere at best. Sheâd take it though. If nothing else, it was an excuse to drain her cup of wine dry. After that one, she figured it was maybe time to cut herself off. For now at least. Wouldnât do to go getting drunk in a sewer surrounded by strange rats. Though that would be one of the least strange places sheâd gotten hammered.Â
âYeah well, itâll be awhile. But I look forward to doing it. Havenât had the chance to really fuck something up for awhile.â She hadnât even been able to finish the last one. When Lizzy had woken up in the ark, she had been partway through dismantling the Hatter gang. Sheâd never even been able to confirm that Daud killed the Geezer. Of course, as soon as she started dwelling on that... the topic coincidentally turned to murdering fathers.Â
âMy hatâs off to you. If a father fucks up bad enough to drive his daughter to patricide, he has it coming.â Lizzy was quieter now. Angrier. The memories of getting ditched by the Geezer as a toddler in Morley, to him having the balls to wage war on her. Sheâd never quite let that one go. âI never got the chance to murder mine. Old bastard set his hideout up so that I couldnât get near him. An assassin that was doing a job for me said he offed him. Never got a chance to verify the body though.â
Lizzy couldnât even bring herself to touch her food now. And, even more shocking from her, she felt an emotion sheâd experienced maybe a handful of times. Empathy.Â
âIâm sorry, for what itâs worth. I wonât presume to know how your dear old dad fucked you up, but it sucks to live with. Iâd know.â
