"You just had to seek the trouble, didn't you." Jack's voice is vibrating with anger. He is angry with Will but mostly he's angry with himself. He promised to protect. He promised Will wouldn't get hurt. Jack hates breaking a promise. He'd rather break someone's jaw. That, at least, feels good. A little blood doesn't hurt anyone, and with Will's complexion, blood almost compliments his pale skin. Still, Jack doesn't like seeing his best asset hurt. God forbid Will ever learns Jack calls him that. Will got hurt, he will get better. Unlike that one, with the knife. He will never walk without wincing from pain again, Jack made sure of that. His knee is destroyed by the bullet. Another misfortune caused by Freddie Lounds, a crazy stalker for Will Graham. Will should get a restraining order from Freddie, for sure. It's not that serious. Just a scratch - long, deep, and bloody. Will could have lost an eye. Instead, he has that scratch going from the corner of his eye to the left ear. And Jack cleans it himself. He is obliged to the harshest judge he knows - Jack Crawford. "You alright? Just got scared?"

Jack didn't look at him. His eyes were on the small group of people around the casket. The preacher was giving a long and emotional speech, too long and too emotional for Jack's liking. The widow was quietly sobbing, on the brink of a breakdown.

Funerals should be quick. No need to prolong the torture... at least, that was what Jack thought. And Jack was mostly right.

They didn't know the victim personally but knew the cause of this whole ceremony. That cause was smirking at Jack in the early hours of the dawn.

Jack looks at Will and makes a note to himself that Will lost some weight. Not a surprise. You gain a bullet, you lose some weight afterwards, that's how it works. Jack knows from his own experience.

What a surprise... somehow Will managed to live up to this very day with his terrible attitude to self-care. How stupid should you be not to wear anything warm after getting a gunshot wound in this weather? Will isn't stupid. Will doesn't care.

Jack hates the slippery road of concern. When you start caring about others enough to let your emotions cloud your judgment. He has to see Will not only as a friend but also as a weapon. You keep your weapons clean and ready.

At least, that's what Jack is telling himself while taking off his scarf and wrapping it around Graham's shoulders. Protecting the wound.

Why are you such a kid, little one. Why do you do this to me?

Jack sensed the hostility in Graham's voice and knew that it wasn't personal. Will needed to be hostile to anything outside his personal space, the cosy world of dogs and not-giving-a-fuck he created for himself. The cosy world Jack ruined with one simple question. Can I borrow your imagination?

"Don't get smart with me, Will. I don't appreciate witty remarks unless they are on the case," Jack didn't snarl, though he should have had. It was Graham's luck they were standing here alone with no ears to hear Will but Crawford's own. "I am your gun. And your shield. And your boss. So stop behaving like a fucking wallflower, and give me what I want to know."

Jack nodded at the corpse grotesquely displayed on the hand-crafted pedestal.
