”Get to work Dr. Grace. The world is counting on you.”
Stratt turned around and with a wave of her hand another man had walked over, “You’ll be remaining here with Dr. Grace. I trust you can keep him out of trouble.”
“Shouldn’t be a problem.” The other man’s voice was smooth, and if Grace was hearing correctly it almost sounded like there was an undercurrent of mirth.
That’s when it clicked, was Stratt siccing a babysitter on him? “Hold on! What trouble are you thinking I'm going to get into?” Should he be offended? He was a grown man, he’d worked in countless labs before and sure he’d had some questionable outcomes but they’d just let him be the first scientist to study an alien life form! They should have more trust in him than this!
”Everyone in the world wants to get their hands on astrophage. Simon is here to protect you from them.” Stratt explained, turning again to give Grace an exasperated expression. “I should hope you don’t need constant supervision from yourself Dr. Grace.”

Simon Aebischer has spent the last several years since being released from prison hiding from his past and quietly working toward his PhD. He has his lab, and his weird, fucked-up strand of mutated algae, and a promise he's made to himself to put something good back into the world after everything he's done. He's always assumed that "good" would take the form of meaningful contributions to marine botanical research that might, if he's lucky, do something to help their warming planet.
But then the planet stops warming. It starts to freeze. There's life in the universe besides humanity, and it's going to kill them.
Now there's a woman with red hair telling him he's going to be working on some kind of project. She tells him it's not optional, but he would've gladly gone anyways. He wants to do anything he can to help.
And anything to learn more about the kind-eyed microbiologist the woman dragged along with her to kidnap him from his lab.

Another convict is on loan for PHM, though after an accident it forces both Simon Eden and Ryland Grace onto the ship, and due to many complications Simon ends up in a coma for a long time. After he wakes up the Trio learn to live with each other in attempt to survive, some attempting to hide secretes from each other, eventually reaching Erid and have a few complications while attempting to settle down.
In short; An AU where Simon also worked for the Project Hail Mary, and was forced onto the ship alongside Grace, now the two of them have to learn to live each other in space, as they both recover from various trauma.

When the nameless man woke up, it was to another nameless man staring at him with great intent.
He looked tired and haggard. There were bags under his eyes and what appeared to be a permanent crease between his brows from scowling. His beard was bristly and his hair long, haphazardly pushed back and away from his face.
“Morning,” the man said.
“Who are you?” Asked the nameless one.
Dry humour sparked in that unfamilar face. “Was hoping you’d be able to tell me.”
