LISTENING: When I watch a movie, I watch it first without subtitles to see how much I can understand. Then I watch it with French subtitles to help with pronunciation. Finally, I watch with English subtitles for comprehension… but I try not to rely on them too much.

• Documentary about bilingualism (in French) • French Films  • Film & Radio (mainly in the beginning of the post) • Music Recommendations  • News in Slow French • French Playlist on Spotify (Credit to @whatlanguageisthis) • How to Listen to Music in a Foreign Language  • Stromae has really good songs!  • Youtube is a great resource for listening as well. To find channels, search for what topic you are interested in and add “francais.”

VOCAB: I try to study whenever I’m bored, like waiting in a line or just before I go to bed.

• 1000 Most Common French Words • 1000 Common French Phrases  • Games for learning vocab • French Vocabulary Website  • How to study new vocabulary: You can make a Quizlet, use Anki, or even use plain old flashcards.  • How to Study With Flashcards • Learn a New Word Everyday  • Fun iOS app for learning vocab! (Paid version is worth the money) • REALLY GOOD dictionary

READING: 

• ReadLang is a great website! Check it out! • This website that has children’s books in French is a blessing. • I subscribe to this news site because it is meant for children, and written with words I mostly know.  • Le Petit Prince is a good book to start with for beginners. • French Reading Practice • 10 French Reading Resources • Honestly just grab a book that’s at your level and go for it. Highlight words that you don’t know, then define them and read again. Read aloud to a native speaker. Don’t put the book down until you understand everything!

WRITING:

• French Spell/Grammar Checker • Writing Prompts (can be used for any language) • Start a journal and write about your day, then spell check it when you’re done. • Talk with a French robot • Find a French speaker/learner and just text them! Here is a post that tells you how to get in touch with native speakers. 

ONLINE COURSES: 

• AMAZING self-paced language courses for all levels! Great way to start for beginners. • Duolingo (app/website) • Mango Langauges (app/website) • If you can, take the French courses on Florida Virtual School or your local online school. Even better, take a class at school.  • Lingolia has awesome grammar lessons! 10/10 would recommend, 

SPEAKING: Probably the most important thing about any language! And funny enough, one of the toughest things to find resources for. 

• WeSpeke  • My Language Exchange • This post • French Together (I suggest going to this first) • Finally, go to the French side of tumblr and just start talking to someone! Once you get to know someone, you can ask to Skype or FaceTime once a week and practice. To get to the French side, just search for “French side of Tumblr,” “Francais,” “French,” etc…

PLEASE HELP

I never thought I’d make a post like this, but here I am.

My friend Kelly is 16 and has 2 years to live. 

Kelly is an inspiring, artistic, clever and beautiful girl.

She has been diagnosed with Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) in October 2015. It’s a rare, aggressive cancer that usually begins in the abdomen. It’s so rare that only 20 adolescents in USA are diagnosed with it a year.

Our friend Kelly has been through 9 rounds of chemotherapy but the tumors are close to her liver. The operation is not possible in UK.

THERE IS HOPE.

There is hope in  The University College Hospital @ London, The MSK @ New York and possibly Christies @ Manchester.

The surgery in USA is not covered by insurance and so we have to found it. We need you to help.  We need £1million for this to happen. We have 80 days.  We need help.

Felt the need to signal boost this again. According to this update, the hospital has taken scans and confirmed that they can and will do the surgery, but the family is only at about 10% of their goal. Please give if you can, and share Kelly’s story if you can’t. I can’t imagine what it feels like to know something could save your life but also knowing that you can’t afford it. No one deserves to go through suffering like this. Let’s do what we can to see that Kelly won’t have to, either.
